Hakodate is at the end of the bullet train (shinkansen) line in Hokkaido. It's 4 hours from Tokyo to Hakodate, then another 4 hours from to Sapporo, where we're going for the snow festival! See what it's like on an intercity express train in Japan, with snacks from the convenience store, snowy landscapes in February and then ramen in Sapporo's Ramen Alley, where you can get vegetarian/vegan vegetable ramen as well as pork.

I took it too, from Shin hakodate to Sapporo.
This train is powered by Diesel engines.loving sounds and smell( diesel exhaustion ?) .
I recommend to anybody who wishes to visit Hokkaido.
Probably not so many people will take this train when the new shinkansen line's finished!

Place names in Hokkaido (even including Sapporo and Hakodate) sound "foreign" even to us Japanese-speakers because they are in the Ainu language. Those town names might "look" Japanese because they are assigned kanji, but ones like Oshamanbe still sound pretty foreign to the Japanese ear.
That's interesting to know, thank you! For a foreigner it's hard to tell things like that, but they do have a different sound to place names elsewhere in Japan.

I was on Hokkaido in February, very snowy every day but everybody made a point of getting around for a night out. They don't use salt or chemicals on the snow the way they do in the US . The snow is around for such a long time it affects the water and they love the water there. Every river had someone putting out a line.
Isn't it amazing - I'd never seen snow drifts so big! I guess if it's snowy for such a long time, you can't let it stop you going out. That's a good point about not using chemicals or salt - I'm glad that's better for the environment. 💚

4 hours of view of winter wonderland from Hakodate to Sapporo! I love cold weather and snow!!! The wakame onigiri looks delicious. Those ice sculptures in Sapporo look very intricate. I really hope that they (ramen shops in Sapporo and elsewhere) would make miso ramen without any animal products. Personally I loooove miso ramen! I look forward to future uploads for the Snow Fest!

Meiji is my most favorite era so I love Hokkaido, especially Hakodate. It's a shame you didn't visit Noboribetsu; the hot springs there are amazing,... hiking around hell valley you can soak your feet in forest hot water streams.
And in Spring/Summer there are IMMENSE flower fields.
If you like tv series there is a really good one called 風のガーデン which was filmed in Hokkaido.
Noboribetsu was on my list actually! If I went back in the spring or summer I'd definitely go. Sounkyo looks beautiful too!

So different from the rest of Japan! There really is a lot of variety in the different prefectures. I really got into those sugary hot drinks - the red bean soup is delicious!

Most train in Hokkaido has two diesel engine per car...That’s why it sounds loud (outside)
But it’s comfortable inside~
Not as fast as Shinkansen, but pretty fast on narrow gauge nevertheless.
Narrow gauge line‘s scenery always better than Shinkansen.
I certainly enjoyed the scenery! One day there'll be shinkansen all the way to Sapporo.

JR Hokkaido tried to develop brand new limited express call
Kiha285 .
But was scrapped without entering revenue services because the safety issues and maintenance costs.

i going from hakodate to sapporo on feb 2020( 7- 10) too .( i be stopping at lake toya for one night. is the vegetarian ramen easy to find??
I found it completely by chance! It's upstairs inside JR Hakodate Station (not Shin-Hakodate the shinkansen station). The station isn't huge so you should be able to find it! Enjoy!! Hokkaido in the winter's a unique and unforgettable experience! :-)
Have noticed that their hot chocolate is a tad bitter as well, but I prefer it. The summer drinks this season are peach, peach milk is my favourite from 7/11, cherry flavoured drink and coke cola lime, all nice. I was brought up in the snow so no more snow for me lol. Why did that train look like the nex ?

Yes! Such excellent value. You need to reserve seats for the shinkansen though (free of charge), and if you're going at snow festival time I'd reserve the whole trip as it'll be busy.

How was the Super Hokuto Ltd. Express ?
Still not extended Shinknsen from Shin-HakodateHokuto to Sapporo.
Super Hokuto is not faster than Hayabusa.
Because, the rail gauge is different that Shinknsen and conventional JR lines
But, probably not so bad.
Except speed, probably almost comfortable.
And very good sightseeing.
Hayabusa is a electric car.
Super Hokuto is a diesel car.
So, Hayabusa is silent than Super Hokuto.
Some Hayabusa have a large luggage space at the end of cabin like Kagayaki.
(Nozomi, Hikari, Kodama have not)
If there is not like that,
I recommend you put large luggage in the back of the most rearward seats at the cabin.
For the references at the next opportunity of train trip in Japan.

I think the Super Hokuto would be more comfortable if it wasn't so crowded (for the snow festival). Every seat was full! I look forward to when the shinkansen line is extended all the way to Sapporo! :-)

So beautiful, but you are braver thsn me going out in that snow. I live in Florida, so heat/humidity I can take very well and safely. Cold?... Well if I cannot wear sandles and a wind breaker to stay warm... and if it drops to or below 60℉... It is too cold. I keep my A/C at 75℉ to 78℉... and that is still cold.... lol It still looks like a beautiful place.
Haha you'd freeze in Hokkaido then!! :-) Today in the UK it's 73℉ & it feels like the height of summer! It was worth braving the snow though for the experience!
So much snow I can not wait I am going to Sapporo in January 2020!

@@byronthecameraman3570 Wow that's a long trip, you'll get to see so much! :-) And the benefit of going at that time of year is that it's off-season, so not as busy everywhere (on my Digital Art Museum video, a lot of people said it was much more crowded when they went).
Names of places in Hokkaido were taken from Ainu Language.
They are like Celtic to you for Japanese people.
Even in some names in the mainland, especially in the northern part of Japan are from AInu language.
The southern limit of Ainu origined place namss are by Kanto.
For example, Nippori in Tokyo is from Ainu. Ppor means a big river in Ainu.
Comapre Nippori with Sapporo.

Yes,Roppongi means 6 trees
Until the middle about the 10th century, Tohoku was not considered to be a part of Japan. Even until the12-13 th centuey, Tohoku did not feel fully Japanese. You can see the difference in the Studio Ghibli film Princess Mononoke.
As for Hokkaido, by the 19th century, it continued being a land for the different people.
Japanese empire conquered north by north through the history.
(On the other hand, they did southern by southern in the earlier age).
But
actually, Ainu is not completely different from the majority of Japanese.
Ainu was an unmixed original Japanese who used to live all through Japanese islands from Okinawa Islands to the Northern islands including Sakhalin in the prehistoric age.
The New people who brought rice to Japan abosrobed Ainu into themselves century by century and they became the today’s Japanese. But Ainu remained unmixed until the modern age.
Depending on regions, some still remain non rice hadvesting oriented cultures today from rituals, languages to foods.
If you are from UK, I am sure that you can get the nuance of the history.
The original Japanese came from Polynesia by canoes.
Today, the original culture remains only in isolated islands like this.

Believe it or not, this is Japan even if it looked like somewhere in the south pacific island.
Foreign people often say that Japan is a mixture of Modern and Tradition.
But actually, not only the “tradition”, but such ancient cultures of primitive age remain in Japan.
The extremelt complicated geography has kept the cultures of every ages remaining in the same country.
Even one town lives the primitive age, the ancient age, the middle age, the modern age and future! at the same time here.
In Japan, the history does not flow but it piles up.

Thanks, so glad you enjoy my videos! :-) I got a JR Pass, which you have to purchase before you travel (it's only for foreigners). For JR East (between Tokyo and Hokkaido), you can reserve seats online a month before you go. I knew it'd be busy so I booked them as soon as I could. For other lines (eg Tokyo to Kyoto) you have to wait till you get to Japan to make your reservations. I've always been find reserving the night before. Sometimes I've left it till I arrived at the station to take my train, but on some occasions the train I wanted was fully booked so I had to take a later one.
Cakes with Faces thanks heaps for the info. We did jr Pass last time and were fine but wasn’t sure about travelling to Sapporo as it’s our first time heading that direction. We are going to Nikko and Morioka on the way too which I’m excited for and Aomori on the way back. I assume they have a restroom on the train from shin Hakodate to Sapporo too, don’t think I could last the journey otherwise lol. Excited to see another side of Japan we’ve not visited before 😊 and enjoy some winter ramen. Miso base is my fav so Sapporo will be awesome.
@@SpookyMelChan That sounds like a great plan! Yes they have toilets on all express trains :-) You'll love it! We went through Morioka and Aomori - there's so much to see in Tohoku and I don't think it's as visited by tourists. Good idea to break up the trip and see more of Japan.

What month was this filmed? There's quite a bit of snow which I didn't know Japan got that much! My family and I will be visiting Japan for the first time this summer and your videos have really helped us plan.
This was in February at Sapporo Snow Festival time :-) Hokkaido and north Japan get lots of snow, but it doesn't snow every year in Tokyo. It's such a long country that there's quite a variation in climate! The summer can be very hot and humid so be prepared! Enjoy planning your trip! :-)
So beautiful in winter! When did you buy your reserved seats for Hakodate to Sapporo? Did you buy the same day, or a few days before? I'm going in ~2 months but I can't find a site to buy Hokuto tickets.
I was using a JR Pass on this trip, and made my seat reservations on JR East's website a month before. As it was snow festival time, the trains were at their busiest so I booked as early as I could; it likely wouldn't be so busy at other times of year.
Depending on your plans, the JR East South Hokkaido Pass might be worth it - it's one of the few regional passes that includes the shinkansen line from Tokyo: www.jreast.co.jp/multi/en/pass/easthokkaido.html

If you're taking lots of trains, a Japan Rail Pass might be worth it - it's only for foreigners so you have to buy it before you travel. You can purchase it online within 3 months of your trip. If you're going north of Tokyo or to Hokkaido, you can make seat reservations online 1 month before you go. Otherwise, you can make them at a station when you get to Japan. Hope that helps!

@@Rachit114 I've been there in early October (Tokyo & Kyoto) and it was still really warm (like summer in the UK!). It cools off throughout October but would still be t-shirt weather in the daytime. The autumn leaves start a little later than you'd think, in November, but it depends on where you're going in Japan as the climate varies from north to south. Hokkaido and north Tohoku would be colder and might not be t-shirt weather. Overall autumn's a great time to go!
@@cakeswithfaces Autumn is exactly when I'm planning. I wish to go when the weather is cool but not too cold to wear sweaters and jackets. Like around ~ 20℃. And mostly planning for Tokyo n Kyoto. Early November would be good? I want to see the autumn colors xD

Haha it'd be perfect wouldn't it? I don't think they were planning a snow festival in Hakodate but these would be just right! There were piles of snow everywhere we went - I guess it's a problem when it doesn't melt away! :-)
