  • This is part six of the free pop up camper renovation! In this video we re-caulk the entire exterior of the pop up and re-butyl tape. Additionally, we applied new lap sealant to the roof-top vent of the pop up. The appliances were given a test and we also checked the waterproofness of the canvas/vinyl and roof. Finally, we greased the wheel bearings.

    This is super good info. Previously being an RV tech we would do this work a lot! Dicor self leveling sealant on the roof is still my favorite sealer. It goes on easy, and if you need to get it off to replace a vent or just reseal it later, it is still easy to work with and remove. After seeing what happens with silicone over the years though I (and the shop) switched to PL based sealer, our favorite being "Sikaflex" in the appropriate color. It really gets stuck to the surfaces good, unlike silicone which seems to peel right off after a few years. One important note though... don't get it on your hands! And don't touch it after it goes on! It's so sticky that if you do end up trying to smooth it out, you basically end up making more of a mess anyway. Not to mention it really doesn't come off your hands.

    Be careful using the ez lube fittings on your axle. Especially if your camper has electric brakes. They will push grease out past the rear bearing seal and cause the brake pads and drums to get grease soaked. Which everyone knows isn't good, but it can also cause a fire from the heat build up with the grease and brakes.

    If I may be so bold, I replaced the crappy chipboard found on most popup campers. The vertical 'boards' that run on the long sides of the roof. These were absolute mush and I'm surprised they both didn't collapse. A lot can be hidden under caulk; make sure it's dry under there! I would love to send you some pics of my trek to replace these side boards.

    Our 1994 Popup camper was stored in a barn and garage most of its life. Someone caulked the seams but used crappy caulking over black mold. I replaced both bearings and both tires. The tires on a popup camper are not the same as an automobile and do not like sitting in one place for years. The tires on ours were thumping when we brought it home. This indicated the cords were damaged from resting in one place. I replaced the cord hatches and will replace the outlet cover in the spring. With Winter around the corner, I have no inside storage so it got tarped and the Gazeebo cover from our easy up that the wind destroyed this summer. In the spring ,I have two rolls of the trim tape to replace all the old brittle and missing trim . I intend to replace all buetle tape and recall all seams and joints using Outside caulk.

    Hi,
    I work for a caulking manufacturer, and i’m going to tell you one of the best kept secrets in the industry: DON’T SMOOTHEN THE CAULK BEAD WITH YOUR FINGER!
    The reason it eventually cracks is because it actually tears up. This is because it lacks the necessary tensile strength to follow the movement of the two surfaces on which it is applied.
    It lacks tensile strength precisely because you removed a lot of material from the bead. More or less like taking a knife and carving off some of the material from a bungee cord before jumping!
    On top of that, when the bead dries, it gets even smaller due to the volume loss caused by solvent evaporation.
    Leave the bead at a convex shape, learn to like the way it looks, and your caulking will last a lot longer!
    Of course, the downside for professional applicators is that they will have less work, since they recaulk less often 😉

      Not 100% sure on that one - possibly a box corner or a box cap. These vary in size and length depending on your specific pop up.

    Where did you order the box corner caps? I need those exact caps but am having a hard time finding them. A website and part number would be great… or you could just ask the vendor to send me 4 for free LOL!

    • @ItsPoppin
      @ItsPoppin  Před 2 lety +1

      Ebay, but it looks like the vendor no longer has them. They were called gray plastic extrusion caps, 2"x2".

      @@ItsPoppin I wish I would have seen your channel before buying my used popup last week it is an older jayco 8t0 lbs. Does not have Lloyd the doodads of more current ones. No fridge no heterogeneous no air very basic so I am hoping not as many issues. I bring it home this week. Bee n cleaning garage to put the camper in. I get a little scared when I see all the upkeep but I will move forward here I am an older single woman. Popup camping is all we did growing up. Guess I looked at it more romantically as a child I had none of the responsibility. I may ask you questions periodically. Best regards Pat
