I spent months in spring going through every book I owned. Ended up donating or gifting 60+ boxes of books but still retained everything I really wanted. I'm left with about 2-3 thousand volumes. I think! After a certain number, I don't believe most people read/consult more than that many books. 📚 Happy Holidays, Dr. Kat!

When my siblings & I were packing up our late mother's house in order to sell it, and dividing up the furniture & things, no one , at first, wanted the china cabinet that had been our grandmother's. Then I thought about it and said " I'll take it. More room for books". So my grandma's china cabinet, that my grandpa made for her, which she displayed her china, now houses part of my book collection along with family photos and knickknacks

One of my dreams is to one day have a library room in my home, complete with cozy armchair and dark wood shelves that reach the ceiling. And maybe a fat orange cat to pet while reading.
One simply cannot have too many books!
Also, a big thank you for telling me that such a thing as "William Shakespeare's Star Wars" exists. I was lucky to find a used set online.
"O help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, help. Thou art mine only hope."
This is simply amazing! Two of my favourite things, Shakespeare and Star Wars, all rolled into one.

We have books all over the house too. There can never be too many books in your home. What a terrific example you're setting for Gabriel. I'm sure he will grow up to love learning and reading too. My granddaughter is 18 months now and we spend hours every day reading books together, at her request. I'm so excited to see her enjoying them too, 😀

We had a teacher in 9th grade middle school who introduced us to Lord of the Flies and then took us to see the film. I still shudder to think how real it felt! She also introduced us to Tolkein’s Tetrology, Dicken’s Great Expectations, Hugo’s Les Miserable and (my favorite) several Shakespeare plays. Thank you Miss Sonja Nelson!👩‍🏫❤

    Hello Dr. Kat,
Love your channel and never miss a post. My husband has been dying for a tour of your book shelves. So he was very happy to see this post. I do have a suggestion. The History of Cannibalism you could get some interesting reactions if you move it to the kitchen and put it with the cookbooks for when you have guests.
I have the Tutor book from the Met show in NYC too. We did get to see that show it was very well done. Got to see many painting in person that I have only have seen in books and online.
Last, I have a book suggestion. I know your main history focus is of the English Tutor period. But the book The Adams Women: Abigail and Louisa Adams, Their Sisters and Daughters by Paul C. Nagel. This is the family of John Adams and John Quincy Adams who became the 2nd and 6th president of the USA. They came from very humble beginnings and ended up the First Family of America. The book centers on the letters that were written to and by the women of the family to each other. I found it fascinating the challenges that women of the 18th century faced. The other fascinating part for me was it being set in the area I was born in and still live. So I have a deep intimacy with the area that you wouldn’t. Part of it talks about when John Adams was Minister to Great Britain. So it does have a London connection too. The book it our of print, but you can find inexpensive copies for sale online.
Hope you are having a great holiday season,
    Scott

I used to shop at a particularly well run Thrift store for books of interest. Often there were really great books I was able to buy when I was raising my children and couldn't afford to buy new ones. But going through the titles - even within a particular subject, was daunting. However, one day I noticed someone had rearranged the book nook and now all the categories were divided between male and female authors. So, if you were looking for a particular book, or author within a category, now you only had to go through half the titles. It sounds absurd, but it really worked, and I decided to arrange my books at home like that even though I kept the categories too. So for the Category HISTORY - Tracy Boreman to the left of the shelf - Dan Snow to the right. It really helps me find a particular book for reference much faster, without having to worry about arranging them in alphabetical order. 📚

I have gone through many a book downsizing. It's never been a pleasant process. We used to have bookshelves everywhere in my childhood home, and everyone contributed. My brother became a historian, and my sister became a library assistant in Bethesda, Maryland (quite large). WHOI and MIT, which caused an explosion of family books, never mind my contributions. I have four feet of shelves of cookery books these days. Behind a rolling rack, they are in the kitchen, and I keep pulling them out. I have a foot-tall stack waiting on a stool for me to put them back on the shelf.
My bookshelves downstairs hold a thousand volumes on everything from how to fix a sink to what to do with gesso to all about Kabuki theatre. We are fortunate to have tall ceilings and an acceptance of industrial-style bookshelves. I have four feet of tabletop game books by my dining table and a five-foot stack of pattern-drafting books I haven't even gotten to on a spine bookshelf in the same area.
I have a mere fifty books on Medieval European history, only three on Elizabeth the First and none on any of the Henrys, so you win. But many of the books you own ( the kind of junky ones) I do as well. 🥴Never mind about the Kindle books; I don't mind, neither should you. Never mind, they are primarily romances or sci-fi or Mary Beard books, coming out to 847 books on Kindle at the moment. Look. if these are too many books for you, then buy them on your Kindle, and please, please, please offer them very loudly to students for free. All of these books should be free.

I feel your pain, lmao! I got a giggle when you said you had books in your kitchen, mostly cook books but not exclusively. I'm just the opposite. I've got cook books in 4 rooms of my house with a sprinkling of other books like history books, prepper books, home school books, biographies, mysteries and finally romance novels. That's not including all the books I have on audible and other electronic book sites those are in the thousands! I have been told by all the people in my life that they refuse to ever help me move out of my house unless I get rid of my books... guess I'm never moving! Lol the books must stay!!!

Oh, Dr. Kat - I think you and I must be kindred spirits. I have bookshelves - overfilled - in my dining room and two bedrooms, plus various volumes scattered here and there, depending on what I'm reading at the moment. During the several times I have moved (which I hate doing) some exasperated friend who is helping will inevitably ask, "Do you have to keep ALL these books?" Yes. Yes, I do. I love seeing other people's bookcases and the books that live there. No there are not too many. But you will have to tell us how often over the next few weeks you reach for a book, where it use to be!, and then have to go look for where you have moved it!

There is no such thing as too many books. One must have a sufficiently large and complex collection of unread books so that one is always prepared for every mood and circumstance. One must also maintain a strong library of the classics and old favorites which will be consulted and reread from time to time. This is, of course, the personal library- a mere adjunct to public, and if one is so fortunate, academic libraries.

I, too, have A LOT of books. Even after so many moves - and the necessary purging of said books - I've still got buckets of books and getting them better organized, mostly in subject-order. One I saw on your shelf seemed to be titled simply George Boylen; I'd like to read that but don't know if it's available in the States (specif. in Texas!) Hmm, time to go to Amazon!! Enjoyed your Tour and Happy New Year! 😺😺

A way of dealing with lots of books is to stack them horizontally, because they take up less room then or rather you use the shelves more economically. You can then also read the titles without inclining your neck.

@@ReadingthePast I was astounded by the amount of documentary evidence re: the lives of Jack the Ripper's victims, given that I've always seen them dismissed as "prostitutes", no further information required. Quite aside from the insult to impoverished women of that era, whose lives apparently don't matter, there's the matter of victim profiling and its importance in tracking serial killers (which admittedly wasn't known at the time of the murders, but a lot of ink has been spilled since then). I noticed "Mindhunter" on your bookshelf too :)

When we retired and moved to our retirement house I challenged my hubs to downsize a box of books a month....fast forward 18 years and 10 months...he is still slowly parting with the odd outdated tech manual. I have allowed for any Math conversions manuals from school (predated pocket calculators) work well with the slide ruler. So yes, one can own too many books.
