Polyushko-polye (Russian: По́люшко-по́ле, IPA: [ˈpolʲʊʂkə ˈpolʲɪ]) is a Soviet Russian-language song. Polye means "field" in Russian, "polyushko" is a diminutive/hypocoristic form for "polye". It is also known as Meadowlands, Song of the Plains, Cavalry of the Steppes or Oh Fields, My Fields in English.
Soviet arrangements[edit]
The music was composed by Lev Knipper, with lyrics by Viktor Gusev in 1933. The song was part of the symphony with chorus (lyrics by Gusev) "A Poem about a Komsomol Soldier" (Поэма о бойце-комсомольце) composed in 1934. The original lyrics are sung from the perspective of a Red Army recruit, who proudly leaves his home to keep watch against his homeland's enemies.
The song was covered many times by many artists in the Soviet Union, including a well-known rock version recorded by Poyushchiye Gitary (Поющие гитáры), released c. 1967. The song has been regularly performed and recorded by the Alexandrov Ensemble, and it is listed in the Alexandrov Ensemble discography, best known as the Red Army Choir.
Full version at London 1945 Youth Congress
At the opening of the London 1945 Youth Congress, the full version of Polyushko-polye was performed by a choir of 6,000 members. The music for this performance was composed by musician L. A. Stokovsky, based on the original music of L. Knipper.

💥The song was written before the Second World War, but since we are talking about fighters who go to the endless field of war, it became one of the popular songs of Soviet soldiers, symbolizing their feat in the victory over fascism. Have you noticed how Diana walks between the majestic trees, like between heroes, and at the end puts flowers on a stump? Felled tree = ruined life. There was a forest, and there is a field... 27 million lives of Soviet people were lost because of the idea of someone's national superiority.

In Greece we are kind of different, we do not celebrate the end of wars but we commemorate the beginning of them, the same goes for World War 2.
Diana ripped my soul with this piece and reminded me again why she is the best.
I had family that fought in the war, both my grandfathers fought in the resistance against the Axis powers and my grandmother lost two brothers there.
Every war is awful but the new generations should never forget and they should honor the people that sacrificed for us to be the way we are.
Diana does that perfectly on this song.

We don't celebrate May 9th here in the USA as well and commemorate US veterans on May 29, which is called Memorial Day and honors all of the fallen and current military personnel. However, May 9th has a very special meaning to my family as I have many ancestors in my family tree who served in the Russian red army and died during WWII. One of them was my beloved grandfather who began his service in the Russian army back in 1941 at the tender age of fourteen and fought bravely against the Germans until the end of war in 1945! He was lucky to survive this terrible war and was honored with medals and numerous military awards. This song invokes a flood of powerful emotions and so much gratitude to those who sacrificed their lives to insure our peace and happiness today! May God bless us all with peace, deliver us from evil, and protect us from all wars!

Я думаю что вы понимаете разницу между полюшком и маленьким полем. Иностранцам зачастую трудно объяснить, что реченька или плюшко это что то любимое, родное и одушевлённое, а не маленького размера. В классической версии песни говориться как отряд красноармейцев проскакал мимо селения. Акцент на нарастающем приближении и последующем удалении и затихании. В прочтении у Дианы, показан взгляд в ретроспективу, с осознанием того что многие ушедшие воевать уже не вернулись домой.
I've previously explained this concept to my Russian-speaking viewers who either complain about the discrepancy in translation of the Russian text and/or the loss of deeper cultural narrative and perspective. I'm sure that you're well aware of the fact that it is virtually impossible to convey or even come close to explaining the deep meanings and cultural nuances behind Russian music, especially when it comes to older war pieces or Slavic folklore, to English-speaking audiences!
Diana's appeal goes far beyond her unusually beautiful and unmatched timbre and powerful vocals. She is well on her way to becoming a National treasure. In some minds she already is but I think her popularity will explode after she finishes her studies at GITIS.

Diana and her family honour her Grandfather every May 9th. This was undoubtedly for her Grandmother who lives with Diana and her Mama Irina. You see her place the red army cap and flowers on the tree stump right at the end. For Grandad. But this is just my opinion of course.

OK, here we are: The flow of the song reminds me of some scenes in the movie The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring.
They are serenely floating downstream in their boats. Then, the music and mood dramatically shifts to the uruks tracking them along the riverbank.
Not stupid at all, The Lord of The Rings was a battle between good verses evil and this song is dedicated to war heroes who fought Nazi Germany, so I can see where you got your inspiration!:-)

I'm not a fan of labeling vocalists and look at performers from the vintage point of judging music based on content, beauty, and emotional impact. This, stands true especially in the case of Diana Ankudinova, she is unlike any other artist and is in a league of her own. Her voice is versatile, impactful, and each performance is unpredictable and comes from another "dimension". I know that there are fans and reactors who love to go into nitty- gritty - technical details such as debating whether someone hit an E6 and memorizing every piece of personal information and dates about their favorite performer. However, it takes all joy out of music, in my opinion. As a professional vocalist and an avid music enthusiast, I'm more interested in the actual experience and depth.
