I have just recently got hold of a 5D and the one thing I’ve found is, as an amateur, it has really forced me to understand photography much more and working with exposure to get what i want. In the past, other cameras have enough latitude to get you out of trouble. With not having auto ISO, for example, you really understand how to use your exposure triangle. Love it’s simplicity and the look of the files are like nothing else i have used.
    Great video; thankyou.

Hi Dean, thanks and glad you liked it. I’d urge you not to sell your 5d you may go for other cameras in the future but keep this one and a lens for it and you’ll find you keep using it too.

I take out my D700 with me everyday. Whilst my A7r3 sits in my cabinet, and only comes out for paid shoots. The d700 still comes with me for paid shoots as well. Phenomenal camera that everyone needs to try. I'm now very intrigued on getting a 5d classic =/.

Owned d700 in the past (have currently d3 in my kit though) and use 5d at the moment. Just. Few cents to add to the comparison.
    Nikon d700 pros:
    + Weather sealing
    + Advanced physical control/Button layout.
    + Advanced Autofocus
    + Higher ISO
    +Slightly better dynamic range
+Pop up flash (could be used as a trigger for off flashes)
    +Live view mode
    Cons:
    - Rubber skin peels of
    - Not great black&white profile
    Canon 5d:
    Pros:
+ Color profile and great AWB
    + Light weight
    + Nice joystick
    + Great black&white profile
+ Very good manufacturing quality camera ages very well "fake leather" stays where it should be
    Cons:
    -AF isn't very reliable
    - Weighted Exposure metering is less precise and sometimes inconsistent
    - No tethering with Lightroom
    - No AF microadjustment
Two great cameras. Nikon d700 is a next gen and more advanced tool.

I used both Nikon D700 & Nikon D600. Color renditions from both camera quite diffrent, D700 color subtle is juicey and vivid like film look while D600 color is soft and look more digital and I try to fix color in post process but cannot make them as same as each others. Couldn't agree more with what you say finally I sold D600 and kept D700.

  • @RichardsModellingAdventures

For wedding work I used both. Started out with the 5D and switched to the D700. As you have said the Nikon was just an easier to camera to use in that environment but both were very capable. The 5D was the go to wedding camera of choice back in the late 2000's ironically due to its then hi ISO performance. I do have a soft spot for Canon L Lenses too. saying all this if I was to go back in time and shoot weddings again I would use the D700 just because it was way better with Hi Speed on camera flash and its better focus performance. It was flawless with a 24-70 f/2.8 shot at f2.8 for near on anything inside and out.

Bang on comments about the D700. I bought mine a few years ago, soley due to your comments on it before. I honestly agree, the images were just so intense and had a feel about them I didn't see again on other bodies I purchased. I moved up to a D810, which is lovely, but it simply doesn't capture the images in quite the same way. The only camera that I find now that gives me a unique feel to the images, is my D4, which in it's own right, creates superb colours, that simply 'Pop' out of the screen. But, if I was looking to buy another Nikon body today, I would certainly would be happy with another D700 for my wedding work. Great content again Martin, keep up the excellent work. All the best. I had the d810 for but it’s excellent but wasn’t mad about the images from it this stuff is just to quantify, you can measure it with any machine so no stats can back it up, but when you know you know. Only a handful of cameras have that certain look I’ve heard others say the d4 has it too. I feel the d600 has it too to some degree. I think I will make a video about this

Having owned both the D700 and the 5D, I can vouch for everything being said here, and I would confirm what he said about the 5D being fast enough to shoot a wedding. I shot a young boy’s birthday party the other day and captured pretty much every action photo I attempted, and these children were moving pretty fast!
But what I agree with most of all is the look of the 5D files, there’s nothing like it. Some people believe that the low megapixel count is the long and short of it but I’ve seen the files from the D700 and they just don’t excite me aesthetically the way the files from the 5D do.
The 5D is the only digital camera out of the 10+ digital cameras I’ve owned where I genuinely like the look of high ISO images because they’re more film-like than any other digital camera I’ve used.

I had a 5D classic in the past and I liked the colors at lower ISO (much better than 5D Mark II), but ... I missed auto-ISO, at ISO 1600 there was a lot of digital noise, the display is useless for reviewing and the autofocus is pretty basic. I would say the experience with the 5D feels like shooting film because of the limitations, which may be appealing. I now still own a D700 and it fixes all those things. The biggest positive is the much faster and more accurate autofocus. The biggest downside is that it's very heavy.

I really enjoyed your take on this subject and actually have just bought a 5D classic off the back of it as I am one of those people who's looking for greater inspiration and something different from a gear change.
Once thing I'd be really keen to hear about is when taking your view of the 5D classic as an inspirational tool (vs the 'more capable' D700) what lenses would be useful to have. What I mean is are there older lenses that have a similar vibe to the 5D classic. As in, less clinical and precise, yet with more 'character', like the 5D seems to offer.

Thanks for your insights. If you were doing product photography in a studio, which would be better?
Obviously, the D700's faster tracking won't make a difference here. We'd need to look at Canon's "look" vs the Nikon's grain structure. I think lenses now also play a big role. Which are better/cheaper/versatile? I believe Nikon can use old manual focus primes which are dirt cheap on eBay, but what about Canon? Can we swap out the focus screens and get the split sceen focussing of old (which I love so much more than a glowing red square). Which interfaces with studio flashes better? Can either be remote controled by a laptop?

Love this, right to the point, color producing from a camera is not something we can mimic with post processing. If it was possible, Canon may not have been too famous for their color science all along. Post processing software are not god-like that can do anything we want. Also, the convenience of getting something straight out is much better than spending time to match that with software later.

I have been shooting Canon 30d and 40d and love them. I wanted to try full frame. The natural choice is 5d mk1 or mk2. However I was really put off by the number of mk1's being sold with mirrors detached or glued back on, there are also lots in really poor shape, well used and abused. I was tempted by the mk2 but it doesn't seem to get much praise apart from its ground-breaking for the time video, I'm not interested in video.
So after a lot of thought I bought a Nikon d700 which arrived yesterday. The build quality is awesome, the ease of controls on the back are brilliant, the customisation in the menu is something space aged compared to the Canon cameras of that same era. I am blown away by the low light capability.
I hope I love it as much as my 30d and 40d, I just need to buy some more lenses now as I only have a 50mm for it.

I own both, I love them both, but like you said the nikon is a bit more professional and im already invested in their lenses and used to using them. Less grain in low light or color noise. I shot the 5d at iso 1000 in lower light and had to always correct that color noise in post. but daylight photos are great. didn't try it with any speedlights or studio setting so cant talk about that, but yeah - I always take my d700 somwhere with me. its solid and reliable. i pair it with the f1.8 85mm, my f2.8 60mm micro, and 1.8 50mm, f3.5-4.5 18-35mm all Nikkors. I also very much like the auto ISO feature when shooting in Manual - and im not afraid of pushing it to 3000 or 4000. Also it has a built in flash - never really use it but if you ever need to, you have it. I also own the d300 and planning to use it only with my 50mm if i want to get a 75mm range on the crop and will likely keep it so i have something to use my 18-200 VR nikkor DX lens for random shots. the d700 also produces beautiful sun stars?

I realized that the D700 was much better in three subjects that I dinnÂŽt like about the 5D. Processing speed, screen and low light AF. The 700 is probably more comfortable to work for example as a weddings photographer, until you download the pictures to the computer, especially when you shoot under daylight. The D700 is a great camera and maybe the 5D makes you work a little harder. But the image quality of the 5D brings always satisfaction to the eye. That is my opinion. Greetings.

Yah, well, my favorite part of my 5D mark one other than the mirror falling off, albeit a dozen years after buying it, is the filthy dust gathering nature of the sensor. While glue fixes the one, nothing really fixes the other. Perhaps the alleged film-like quality is actually dust and low resolution? Yes the dynamic range is awful. I never thought it was classic anything but apparently it has a cult status like the x-pro 1, which is way more deserved being the only digital Contax G-2 replacement out there. And then, when do they fail and who fixes them when they do? Mine is still plugging along but it is electronic stuff, how long until those ribbon cables are goo? Have you ever seen a repair video for an old electronic item? I mean parts degrade and go to hell just sitting there over time. Not a problem so far, but???
I feel like what Patton said in his speech in the movie: "When you put your hand over into a bunch of goo that was formerly...... you'll know what to do" Or words to that effect. Yet since it is not yet goo I am at a loss for the moment, I must ponder the goo moment ahead of time..... perhaps the solution is the 400 plus year lifespan of slide film?
