BMW 530D Touring Suspension Air Compressor Fixed for £25

  • BMW 530D estate; Air Suspension would intermittently deflate and not re-inflate... and then it would, without any logic, and hold for a few days before randomly deflating again. Completely deflating. Air Springs had been changed within the past 10k miles, so very unlikely to be that... so, must be the compressor - the most expensive part of the system to fail. Thought I was facing a £1,200 bill (at least) from BMW or another specialist, until I started searching the web and thinking this could be something really quite simple and inexpensive to deal with. Turns out I was right - a sticky release solenoid valve, replaced for £25, and everything is back to working normally.
    Having worked through this, the idea that the compressor could be blown and need replacing is highly unlikely. Much more likely it's just one small, inexpensive part of the compressor that has failed through wear and tear - as you'll see in this video, the compressor is actually very robust and unlikely to be a complete write-off.
    DiagnoseDan's video on the Suspension Compressor was a really helpful starting point to understand things - but even then he was simply replacing the Compressor rather than fixing it:
    • Air Springs replaced, ...

    Very useful. I did mine in 1h - you dont have to drop the whole pump - just release the plastic air drier and fit the solenoid to it and then replace.

      That's true, if you know what the problem is - but at the time, I had no idea what of the many things it could be, so took the whole thing out to dismantle and test. Learned a lot in the process, so it wasn't a wasted afternoon...

    How did you close the compressor unit? Did you use loctite on the screws? As it looks like they had some on them from factory. And did you use some kind of sealant on the o rings? Thanks for your video!

      Yes, I guess I can't have done - for some reason I thought it was (could have sworn it had Wabco on the casing) but must just be a very close copy. It does have a few design differences as you can see at 12:07. Works perfectly though. Got it on ebay.

    • @mikeroberts2221
      @mikeroberts2221  Před rokem

      That sounds like either a stuck release solenoid (like my issue) or a controller issue (which I’m have no experience of). I would suggest replacing the release solenoid as I did - or at least dismantling the compressor to see if you can test it…

    My 40amp fuse had blown replaced and back up it went , but higher than normal , but I'm getting a driver comfort restriction warning any ideas?

    • @mikeroberts2221
      @mikeroberts2221  Před rokem

      Hi Tad, from the research I did for my own issue, I think a blown 40amp fuse would indicate there's a lot of resistance in the compressor such that it has drawn more than 40amps to operate at some point. Other people have found that this was due to the compressor having become very wet - and this causes resistance when compressing. I would suggest removing the compressor (as per my video), and dismantling it to see if that's true. It should be obvious by the condition inside that this is the case. If not this, then some other form of resistance such as the distribution solenoids being clogged or not opening properly. If wet, thoroughly dry it (and the drying beads) and check seals before dismantling. If it's this, then it might not even cost you £25 - just the time. If it seems to be an issue with the distribution solenoid, then replace that (£35 on ebay I think)... Good luck!!
