Britannia chases Galatea up Shap 30/5/15

- Here is my footage of a very rare event in the mainline steam world where we see two steam tours without diesel involvement attacking the climb up Shap simultaneously on Saturday 30th May 2015. We first see Jubilee Class 45699 'Galatea' attacking the climb pulling 'The Cumbrian Coast Express' and then in the same frame we see Britannia Class 70000 'Britannia' closely following and awaiting the signals to clear for her attack on the summit.
Hope you enjoy.
I've watched this video about a dozen times over the past few weeks and it must rank as one the best over Shap, and is also so unique. When the driver gives Britannia her head she just storms away with her train and the noticeable change in exhaust blast is a truly moving experience in every sense of the word. Many thanks again Phil.
+Clive Meredith Thanks again for taking the time to watch and comment its very much appreciated.
Regards Phil.
Without any doubt this video must rank as one of the most unique in modern day steam workings. The camera positioning was spot on, the long video shots were perfect and the sounds of two steam loco's slogging up Shap was superb. Hearing the exhaust beat of two loco's simultaneously was the highlight for me, as I love those long approaching and receding sounds. Well done too for running the video after Britannia had long passed, and all credit to the drivers and firemen, they really knew how to handle those engines to perfection. Thank you.
+Clive Meredith Thank you very much for the kind words they are much appreciated.
Regards Phil.
Still a bloody good recording. Thanks 👍.
Well done to the fireman on Galatea, excellent job. Right on the limit for a Jubilee and you kept her going. First class.
Chris Adamson Thanks for watching and glad you liked.
He certainly stoked her up good!
Hmmmm a quote from an old Midland driver (my late Grandfather) if you see black smoke from the chimney of a steam locomotive then the Fireman wasn't doing his job properly. So I'd say the Fireman on Britannia was doing a far better job. Yes the Jubilee was probably on her limit having a rake of ten so I'll give the crew the benefit of the doubt, but in saying that my Grandfather probably wouldn't.
@@carldavies7418 all it means is the door is open and he's stoking. Doesn't mean he's not doing a good job. Stoking up before the climb and hoping for the best would not have been a good call here. Stoke up before and then probably need to keep going some of the way up.
What a rare dramatic coincidence! Thank you for capturing it!
What a fantastic video Phil of these 2 steam tours in 1 shot . History in the making. You were in just the right place. Very well captured. Liked and fav C&A
EMuksteam Thanks and I appreciate your comment C&A.
Cheers Phil.
WOW ! Brittania , that beat send shivers down your spine . 😀👂
Only one word can sum this up Phil-Stunning. Definitely a one of a kind shot, something which we will most likely never see again...Graham
steamdriver12 Thanks Graham and it was nice to see the two tours attacking Shap in very different circumstances.
Regards Phil.
Absolutely staggering. The finest rail footage I have ever seen. Seeing steam trains in view at the same time taking on Shap must be unique. Superb choice of precise location. Bet the unit driver wasn't best pleased by the delay.
Thank you for the positive words they are very much appreciated. The convoy of 4 class 66's running up the rear must have been impressed with their view of events.
Regards Phil.
An incredible video of the steam 'procession' up the Shap incline. A truly marvellous spectacle Phil and very well done indeed on capturing these moments for us all to enjoy.
Regards - Allan.
allan5919 Thanks very much for watching Allan.
Regards Phil.
Just found this. It was before we moved up this way and I am filled with admiration (and jealousy) at this real epic. Extremely well done - the right place at the right time and for the right time! Thank you.
Thanks for the kind words.
That is amazing footage - great forethought and planning! A really fascinating capture of a very rare event and brilliant sound too! Thanks for posting this, it's fantastic.
Andy Burns Thanks very much for watching and glad you liked.
A superb piece of video - probably the longest I've seen without a single move of the camera or lens! A great position, a clear day, no wind to drag the sound away and not a moment without interest. I like the two final elements, too - the 'upstart' DMU patiently waiting for its turn in the distance and the man savouring the retreating sounds. Well done.
Thank you for watching and glad you liked.
The fact that Galatea was even making headway up shap WITH LOAD 11 without a banker is credit to the crew on her footplate that day. Asking Jubilee to tackle shap with load 11 with a banker would be hard. Without one it's amazing she was still storming up it.
That is what I call bliss!
Country scene with birds chirping, sheep and gunzels grazing the fields and the dulcet tones of two superbly maintained heritage trains climbing the rise.
Thank you very much for arranging to be in the right place at the right time.
Neil Smith Thank you very much for watching and glad you liked.
Just fabulous, thank you so much for sharing. Brilliant footage, brilliant choice of location.
Nigel Braithwaite Thanks for watching and glad you liked.
Phil, you picked the perfect location to capture this great rare event, and to think that the majority of mainline steam was on the verge of finishing a few weeks ago ! Regards, Liam
Marsh Steam Videos™ Thanks for watching Liam and your comment it is very much appreciated.
Regards Phil.
+Marsh Steam Videos™ ...and, nine months on, it's in even more danger...
Superbly conceived and executed video Phil - who'd have thought we'd ever see this again! Many thanks, David.
Linesider1 Thanks for watching David and lets hope it can happen again it would be nice to see two steam tours pathed next to each other.
Cheers Phil.
Stunning capture to be enjoyed over and over, as I have done. Thanks for allowing everyone to share your experience.
***** Thank you for watching.
Brilliant footage of the two engines climbing Shap. A rare occurrence in these days. The sound is excellent and perfect location. Thank you for sharing.
Steve Boothby Thanks for watching and your comment is appreciated.
Rare footage indeed in this day of ours where mainline steam is oft regarded as something of a novelty for old guys with nostalgia. Not on your life - this is a superb video which captures all the elements of preserved steam today.. A joy to watch and appreciate the skill of today's crews. All admiration to the Crew of Britannia for maintaining a steady beat up Shap (probably against double yellows all the way) ensuring avoidance of a wheel slip or red light and the likelyhood of a standing start. Many thanks - most enjoyable
Henry Taysom Thank you for watching and the positive words they are very much appreciated.
Magnificent picture and sound as a testimony to steam; I was next to Steve T at Salterwath and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Well done Phil. Cheers John
snowjohnb Thanks very much for watching John and glad you liked.
Cheers Phil.
Brilliant, love the way you let the sounds of the Britannia trail off at the end, so many videos cut short when the train has passed.
+theswitcher1 Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Just amazing Phil, allowing two trains so close especially on the climb to Shap is a very unusual occurrence, with both on shot and performing superbly with 11 on each train...Bob
Robert Masterman Thanks Bob and it was nice to see the two tours attacking Shap under very different circumstances.
Regards Phil.
Superb Phil, that was a great idea to position yourself that side so capturing both trains in the shot. Superb filming, good to see you this morning
acw71000 Thanks Austin and it was nice to see Pam and yourself yesterday and then to see two tours attacking Shap was an added bonus.
Regards Phil.
That is one bloody brilliant video there, it made my day by just seeing this, fabulous how you can see 45699 climbing and you can see 70000 in the distance, liked, Tom
TH Railway Videos Thanks very much for watching Tom and glad you enjoyed.
Regards Phil.
Brilliant video Phil. You certainly picked the best spot to capture a unique event. Well done. Cheers, Dave.
***** Thanks very much for watching Dave and glad you enjoyed.
Regards Phil.
One of the best steam vids on yt, great sound and amazing coverage of such a rare event
+peter990099 Thanks very much for watching and the positive words they are appreciated.
An absolutely incredible event!! Were there coal/fire issues with Galatea I wonder? There have been similar issues before. Great to hear Britannia pick up speed on the last mile of Shap - nothing wrong with that loco. Anyway, a fantastic video of something that will probably never be repeated, well captured Phil. Many thanks for sharing, cheers, Alan
Alan Lucraft Thanks very much for the kind words Alan.
Regards Phil.
Alan Lucraft there was coal issues with galatea thats why this event happened
You can still hear Galatea as Britannia approaches! That's got to be something hardly ever seen before. 11 coaches unassisted was asking a lot of a Jubilee, but it was doing a sterling job slogging up there. So was Britannia from a standing start.
AndreiTupolev Thanks for watching and glad you liked.
+AndreiTupolev I think your right, it was giving its all and doing well to be fair
+AndreiTupolev I think your right, it was giving its all and doing well to be fair
Great video- one of the best I've seen on CZcams. The sounds from Britannia make your hair stand on end!
geoffwba1 Thanks very much for the kind words they are appreciated.
Sight and sounds of two quite different locos on what must be the most famous eighty eight miles of railway line anywhere in the world. Thank you for posting!
Thank you for watching.
I just don't know what words to use Phil. Magical, brilliant, superb - any would fit and yet not be good enough to sum this shot up. A finely chosen location to start with and then 10 minutes of history unfolding before our eyes. Hope you can tell I enjoyed that immensely. Thanks for sharing. Chris
khankadet Thanks very much for the kind words Chris they are very much appreciated.
Cheers Phil.
Fantastic! I really enjoyed watching this. Brilliant location and motive power.
Thanks for watching.
I am 76 yrs old and this is as Grand a sight, as watching the old California Zephyr, blowin thru the Feather River Canyon, in the U.S.A, back in the day.
Thanks for watching and pleased you enjoyed.
great shots.take you back to the days of steam.lovely video and location over shap.cheers tom.
Tom Oyebo Thanks very much for watching Tom and glad you liked.
Cheers Phil.
Superb video Phil. You certainly picked the right location for this once in a lifetime event! The wonderful sound track could be from the 1960's.
Christopher Searle Thanks very much for watching and glad you liked.
Great video - I'd never think I would have seen something like this. Fantastic and I believe a unique sight in railways of today. Thanks for sharing.
Regards John (and Grandson Ivo)
+John Penny Thanks very much John & Ivo and glad you enjoyed.
Regards Phil.
Brilliant, one of the best video's I have seen... The right place at the right time, incredible WELL DONE
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Galatea not to be denied despite coal issues....fine footage of two magnificent locos. Just love the overlapping of their respective beats. Britannia superb from a standing start. Thanks
Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed.
What was wrong with the coal, do you know?
I think without doubt this is the best video on CZcams of this particularly epic event..... You've captured the spectacle so well with the awesome audio, getting both loco's in the same shot, and the whole feel of the drag and effort of the climb... My only wish is that you hadn't put the screen wipe in at the start of Britannia's run and cut out that 30secs to a minute or so of footage, as unedited it would have been a better record of history... but still awesome - Thanks for sharing with us.
DefAde Thanks for watching and the comment it is very much appreciated.
One of the best I've seen. Thankyou.
+horacebachelor Thank you very much and glad you liked.
Oh now this is something a little special... Love the video: really just wish I had been able to see it in person.
Keep up the good work! :)
sultanofswing1 Thanks very much for watching.
Perfect positioning to capture what must be the mainline steam event of 2015. Thanks for sharing, regards John.
Sowerbylads Thanks very much John and glad you enjoyed.
Regards Phil.
never seen Shap from this view-point before, and it really shows off the climb. loved it and added to favourites.
+titup2 Thank you for watching.
Simply cracking footage Phil. How lucky we were to see 2 locos working hard over Shap in a matter of minutes A day to remember
Mike
rab4472 Thanks Mike and it was a rare sight the events on Saturday and to think a month ago we thought it was never going to happen again.
Regards Phil.
Brilliant video of what must be a unique sight nowadays, never mind rare! Superb location chosen to catch both trains in the same frame. Just a pity the Jubilee was struggling and caused Britannia to have to start the climb from almost a standstill. Britannia accelerating impressively at the end. Thanks for a wonderful video.
Roger Denton Thanks you for watching and glad you liked.
Great to see two trains in same shot, amazing. But what i really enjoy in this clip is when there is no train in shot. The sound of Britannia accelerating away is great. Well done to keep filming for the sound alone.
Kiwi Steam Videos Thanks you for the kind words they are much appreciated.
This is amazing shot, they sound fantastic!! Beautiful location!! Cheers.Andy
+AJ Goss Film Productions Thanks for watching Andy and glad you liked.
Regards Phil.
+981smithy Your welcome!! Thank you too, All the best..Andy
I keep coming back to this one and love it every time. IIRC the Jubilee had the most awful load of slack imaginable in her tender.....
Thank you for watching.
I have just watched 70000 on the Torbay express. It got away after some battery problem. A great loco. I often view or see these on the Devon banks...Hemerdon etc., but this is great footage, well done!
+Richard James Thanks very much for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Wow fantastic - great scene and great sound, thank you.
Thank you
Awesome captures Phil....Two Steam Trains on the same track after all these Years...unforgettable...Cheers...Steve..~
***** Thanks very much Steve and lets hope it can happen again one day with a little help with the timetabling.
Regards Phil.
Amazing video and a scene repeated 4 years later on 18 May 2019 with Britannia hammering up Shap followed 15 minutes later by Leander who was also putting on a good show. Many thanks David.
Thanks for your comment it’s much appreciated.
Excellent video Phil must be video of the year..cheers Steve..
stestepney Thanks for watching Steve and the kind comment it is very much appreciated.
Regards Phil.
Fabulous video, thanks for sharing it with us.
Thank you for watching.
Phil I heard about what had happened on Shap, but this is amazing to watch and well done for picking a location with little wind. I filmed Galatea on the Cumbrian Coast area. Mike.
antman09ful1 Thanks very much for watching Mike and glad you enjoyed.
Regards Phil.
Wonderful Video, Great listening through the sound system.
Daikenboy Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Magic...two completely different exhaust beats heard at the same time! Who would ever have thought that would happen?
And Britannia saying "I think I can" which eventually turns into "I KNOW I can"! :-)
The audio is very clear when the locos were passing the camera, very nice!
Never tire of watching this film, superb and rare footage. An interesting aside is these would have taken on a banker in steam days with such a load.
Thanks for watching again.
Superb footage, enjoyed watching it.
is1943 Thank you for watching and glad you liked.
You even caught the four class 66 crawling up behind the Brit. Excellent work.
brigantessgob Thanks very much for watching.
Brilliant timing and location...

Fantastic Phil that's all that has to be said. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, made my day watching, cheers
Stephen Millington Thanks for watching.
Best video of the year, if not the decade
Mike Wilcock Thank you very much and glad you enjoyed.
Superb video of a historic occasion two steam locos on Shap. Camera work first class. Would you mind telling me which editing program you use.
Bill Bell Thank you for watching and the editing program is Corel.
Tremendous footage, and sound and camera too.
Thank you for watching.
Brilliant Phil , ideal location to catch a fine piece of history . Shame the Brit was behind and not in front . Regards Steve
TheStephengthompson Thanks Steve and it was nice to see the two tours attacking Shap in very different circumstances.
Regards Phil.
What a sight, Phil. You were perfectly positioned to capture the drama. I expect we will not see the likes of again. Hope Britannia gets another go at Shap, unhindered. Keith
hemerdonbank Thanks for watching Keith and glad you liked.
Regards Phil.
Mmmm, very very nice. there seemed to be a service train just behind the Brit as well. Glad you left the camera rolling after the Brit passed out of shot, nice sound of the acceleration after she passed you. The Jube did not seem to have been fired too well, too much black smoke indicating incomplete combustion.
John Boocock Thanks for watching and glad you liked.
Just had to watch this epic video again! Got to be one of my fav videos on here and I have watched many! Sure I heard the horn of a modern loco?
+Rich Davey Thank you.
A truly superb video capturing the 'attack' but what I really think is the icing is the off camera sound for the last 90 seconds. Down 'ere in the south we have a good climb out of Weymouth but it is impossible to film like this
Thank you very much for the positive words they are much appreciated.
Does anyone film at Bincombe Bank anymore - there have been plenty of steam trains down here this summer
Nice comparison here. Can see quite a difference in amount of smoke between them.
Terrific. I think its all been said except to congratulate the two crews on their sterling, professional performances. At one time this was a procession albeit at mostly higher speeds.
OldFart Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Great video! (But it also shows why the LMS needed a big double-Pacific Garratt) Thanks for posting.
chygwelanmeneth Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Great videos Phil! Two Jubilees (Miles Platting and Shap) and a Brit in one day! Congrats' on the shots (and the weather). Superb sound as well.
Boring bit - did you stay to see what was at the back of the queue - was it a Trans Pennine unit or light engines?
holmesjunction Thanks very much for watching and glad you enjoyed.
Brilliant video!
Very good, great view and two fine locomotives. Question. In most Australian mainline steam excursion video clips, we see a water wagon behind the tender - I'm sure you can see that in some of Rod Williams' fine clips. Yet I do not recall it on British clips. Perhaps someone knows why.
+Codenwarra Cove Thanks for watching and you usually find the tours in Britain will have water stops every one to two hours of travel.
On par if not better with Peter Handford's Recording "Trains in the Hills" I've watched your production over and over and never tire of listening to the evocative sounds which was once a common daily sight all those years ago ...Bloody Marvelous!!!
andrew dyke Thank you very much for the kind words they are very much appreciated.
Great video.Struggling a little were they.
That was a great video. Well done.
***** Thank you for watching.
Fantastic stuff but no mention of the third train bringing up the rear.
Rod Williams Thank you for watching and the third train was a convoy of four class 66's.
+981smithy Ah, were they the standby locos in the event of a problem?
Fantastic thanks for sharing
***** Thank you for watching.
Marvellous video Phil. I wonder was Galatea signal checked before she commenced the climb? Anyway great effort with 11.
Peter Clamp Thank you for watching and I think it was the shear toll of the climb that eventually got to Galatea.
Wonderful! Thanks.
+Roger Grenville Thank you for watching.
Thank you for this, very enjoyable to watch. (I remember Britannia-class engines on the Liverpool Street-Norwich line around 1960 when I was a small boy trainspotting at Wymondham. "Owen Glendower" is the sole name I can recall with certainty.) Now, can anyone explain to me why the exhaust of the Galatea is so dirty and that of Britannia so clean? People below have hinted at the skill of the fireman or the quality of the coal... but what are the factors involved?
+Stiamh Ionas Thanks for watching and hopefully someone will have the info on the different exhaust smoke.
+Stiamh Ionas Primary and secondary air control through the firebox
It looks like the Jubilee fireman may have over banked his fire for the exhaust to be that dirty for that length of time. The Jubilee wasn't struggling, she clearly had plenty of steam and power in reserve as she is not easing her pace at all. The driver is keeping her at the pace that he senses is right to keep her moving without those 6'9'' wheels slipping. That speed will have been determined by the circumstances at the start of the climb.
I too remember those times on that same line.
This amazing train came thro Castleford west yorks on the 25th oct 2016 . brougt back happy memories ,oh how i miss the sound of the old steam locos.
Thanks for watching.
Your welcome ty for posting. I went shopping in Castleford with 3 of my grandkids my only regret is i forgot to take my camera to record the event.
Hi Smithy. Can you tell me which location you recorded this from please? Thanks, Andy ...... I've been studying the maps and I think you must have taken a short hike from the underbridge near Shap Wells Hotel. Am I right? A
Yes the location is on the East side of the railbridge at Shap Wells. Open access is allowed in the area.
@@981smithy Thanks. I'll try to use that location at some stage this year. Andy
Superb catch!
itfcsam thank you for watching.
A rare occasion indeed Phil, and a reminder of better days for steam - all you needed to complete the picture was a steam banker! Both locos struggled but Britannia seemed to have more in reserve as she passed you. Were both locos signal checked prior to the climb? Nice to see one of your vids again, Phil and thanks for sharing it. Best wishes. Ken
Ken Browne Thanks very much for watching Ken and the Brit had plenty of power in reserve and I could hear it as she crested the summit.
Cheers Phil.
Excellent work.
Thanks
Wow. Fantastic having both in shot at the same time.
Thanks for watching.
And thank you !
..brilliant as always..
