  • Wout van Aert, Team Jumbo Visma, is recovering from a severe leg injury after catching a barrier during Stage 13, the Individual Time Trial, forcing him to abandon the race. Speaking in hospital in France on Saturday, he reflected on the crash and his boyhood dream being dashed - for this year at least.

    Nice interview. I'm absolutely gutted for him because he was riding so well. I'm surprised he isn't clearer about what happened with the barrier. I'm assuming it's been fully investigated by others at this point, but watching replays and seeing the way the barriers are designed makes it quite clear to me. His right hip/bib shorts got impaled by the joining fork at the top of the barrier. They're meant to link up with the adjacent barrier, but the race organizers aligned them AGAINST the direction of travel so they were basically like knives pointing right back at the riders as they flew by. Eminently foreseeable crash and a ridiculous decision by the race organizers to align the barriers like that.

      It was an accident waiting to happen💥(ALTRAD) CROWD CONTROL BARRIERS are dangerous when they are put in the wrong direction ..special in the corner

      Some french type barrier which has forks on the side... I've never seen that type of barrier where I've been. Fences I've seen only have hooks on their side, from which they're joined...

    dude you are a real talent and hope you get back on the bike soon - that was a horrible crash and not your fault at all - those damn barriers have taken down many a fine rider - they are ridiculous - an outright hazard and have been for many years yet the UCI likes drama and refuses to remove them for safer barriers - that is CRIMINAL - if I was you I would SUE the UCI for allowing unsafe barriers - hang in there and be patient with the recovery - don't rush it - it takes a lot of time to get back to where you were - hard not to press but you MUST let it heal fully and then slowly bring it back - hope all goes well for you

    The crash was absolutely horrifying so, in a way, I’m glad he’s ok. When it happened, i was sure he tore his knee ligaments out! Sad to see him out of the Tour.
    Am I the only one who though the interviewer was turning the knife in the wound?

    • @stevenvandenbroucke8660
      @stevenvandenbroucke8660 Před 5 lety +3

      Juan0003 No, the interviewer isn’t, the interviewer is from team jumbo visma and he knows that Wout doesn’t have a problem with this questionnaires, as you may know Wout is a cyclocross rider and he had a very tuf cyclocross season and know his season on the road is going very well, he is happy anyway

    Exactly right. Compare Moto GP1 courses to what bicycle riders face. I understand that the courses are much longer, but especially in time trials, much more care in preparation of the courses should be exercised! Sorry to see Wout van Aert suffer because of organizer lack of care or competence.

  • @ducatimale
    @ducatimale Před 5 lety +1

    My first thought when I saw the crash was that the overlap of the fences was in the incorrect way. it should be made so that you can lean into the fence without getting 'hooked' by it. Easy mistake to make if you're in a hurry assembling things, and most unfortunate in this case. Get well soon Wout!!!

    The fence was useless in that corner. The Tour organisers are abusing of these fences today because they want to create more and more distance between the race and the public, and this makes the atmosphere unpleasant compared to other races.
