      He’s not far off the mark when he said that about the ak12 gas tube. The ak12’s gas tube is non detachable in comparison to thee previous ak models which make the gun harder to clean and more prone to corrosion. Which is pretty disappointing for Russia’s latest modern service rifle.

Maybe not everyone is as brilliant and well versed as Mr. Starsky here, but still. Since the start of this war against Ruzzia I've been watching Ukraine 24 news daily and, man, am I surprised every time I hear people from the streets give very respectable interviews in English! So, yes, a new generation of freedom loving Ukrainians has no problem with foreign languages in general and English in particular.

    Only a small amount of AK-47s were built. Production was quickly replaced by AKM. The original AKs were built with machined parts. The later rifles used stamped metal fabrication that greatly reduces cost and are still reliable. The internal parts of the German ARs are very different to the AK rifles. The only have a similar layout. Most AK rifles are not suitable for holding optical sighting systems like the US AR-15/M16,M-4 rifles that can be much more accurate. With advanced modern optics US riflemen are going to be equipped with a more powerful long range rifle made by Sig. Greatly increasing accuracy. The new US army sights are computerised with a number of apps. Most Russian soldiers are still using iron sights like the original AK-47. The AK iron sights are suitable for close range fighting like a submachine gun. Not for long range accuracy. Russia has an impressive small arms industry. But many solders are using older style rifles. This is okay because many Russian soldiers have not been well trained for accurate shooting. The Russian military has been sending in soldiers with little or no basic training. They are just making up numbers. Putin has had years to prepare for this special operation. His corruption has badly influenced the Russian military. Claims about many new Russian weapons are false propaganda.

People who can really shoot achieve a next level kind of symbiosis with the gun (or bow, spear etc) that is awe inspiring and a bit frightening because nearly all humans have this capacity once it is unlocked. Ice-rink skaters are unbelievably graceful and are moving pieces of their body all as one in harmony, but they're not hardwired for it; we learn skills. A skilled marksman is a beautiful thing.

    Starski, concerning the gas tube problem with "rot", I believe you meant "corrosion" or "rust". This is due to the use of corrosive ammo, which leaves a salt like deposit in the barrel and gas tube. The barrel is chrome line, so no problem there, but the gas tube isn't. You probably know the barrel should be cleaned with military bore cleaner AND the gas tube and piston. Hot soapy water works well to remove the salts, the hotter the better, as the hot barrel , gas tube, and piston wi usually dry themselves from the heat. Then clean and lubricate as per normal.
    A friend had an SKS in which the gas piston was frozen in the gas tube due to severe rust. When I was able to get it apart, the barrel and gas piston were fine due to being chromed, but the gas tube was trash. Replaced it and all was well.

      The problem was that it ended up as a committee made rifle. The russians obviously wanted a rifle that could match the mounting capabilities of western rifles, which is not really possible on the legacy system(AK-47,AKM,AK-74) and the 100 series(Like the AK-74m which is still standard issue) needs an upgrade kit. So they got Kalashnikov concerned to make a new one, that rifle being the AK-200. However the army initially rejected it because they already had millions of AK-74's. So it got put on the shelf until at some point after 2014, where the cumulative experience of both Ukraine and Syria told them they desperately needed optic mounting capabilities so they brought it back.

    • @DasOrmur
      @DasOrmur Před 2 lety +4

      Unfortunately(for themselves + every AK fanboy on the planet) they put together a committee to decide what they wanted that rifle to be. Predictably, every idiot in that committee insisted on their individual ideas being included. The result was that the AK-200 had to be scrapped because of a couple of useless features, and instead they got the AK-400, a rifle that copied most of the legacy system for "familiarity", with a fixed gas tube, a useless burst fire mechanism(which is what bricked the 200 btw), a tacticool picatinny rail thats mounted directly onto the top cover and a bunch of other nonsense that generally just come together to make a slightly worse AK-74 for 5 times the price of getting an aftermarket upgrade kit.

      There's like a bunch of reasons for that. You can carry more ammo, also the lighter bullet will go further and keep high velocity (the distance of direct shot in 7.62 is around 300m, while in 5.45 it's 400 m, if I remember this correctly), plus this 5.45 bullet is incredibly dangerous, cause as soon as it penetrates the body, it starts zigzagging around inside of it, leaving horrific wounds.

      The ballistic coefficient of the 7.62X39 projectile is similar to a pistol round, as most are flat bottomed. This produces a vortex behind the flat base at supersonic velocities and causes increased drag, which causes the projectile to lose velocity more quickly than a spitzer (aka boat tail) projectile, which has a tapered base that smooths the supersonic vortex behind the bullet.
      The 7N6 projectile is a spitzer/boat tail design, so it stays supersonic at greater distances than the 7.62. The 7N6 also has a steel penetrator above the main lead body at the base of the projectile, underneath the copper jacket, and there's a hollow space immediately behind the point of the projectile jacket, so when the 7N6 strikes a soft target, it will tumble on impact, similar to the original 55 grain M193 5.56X45 projectile that was used in the 20" barreled M16A1. Both tumble in soft targets, dumping their kinetic energy and generating hydrostatic shockwaves that tear organs, tendons, muscle tissue and creates an exit wound that's significantly larger than the initial entry wound.
      The Afghans dubbed the 7N6 "the poison bullet" due to this fact, since most people shot by it died due to the above factors, where the 7.62X39 would punch a hole in your body, and leave a smaller exit wound, and were more survivable.

      Saying that the only thing Russia has given the world is the AK is a bit rich, however: A few literary greats spring to mind, the greatest rocket engines for 50 years, consitently (still taking everyone to the ISS and launching satellites, up until Space-X made it cheaper)
      Not to mention the fact that he's comparing Russian with NATO weaponry - nothing Ukrainian, because their government has been one of the the most corrupt in Europe for decades - Kleptocracy, Oligarchs etc. (as if this is just a Russian phenomena). It was the tackling-corruption-ticket in government that Zelensky got voted in on - and he didn't do very well at that. Popularity had dropped massively before the invasion. Then the US State Department bailed him out with good PR. They weren't;t is first choice.
      Yes, US dictated Ukraine's Government. They even tabled Klitschko (Kiev Mayor), but decided he needed more "training." See Victoria Nuland.

    This comment I typed was still in my clipboard from yesterday thank goodness:
    The AK is much more a copy of the M1 Garand than the MP/STG Sturmgewehr rifles. Both the AK and the Garand are two-lug rotating bolt action guns with the former's bolt being considered by many to be an evolution of the latter's even if it appears, to the layman, to be visually similar to the MP43's bolt. Mechanically, the action of an M1 occurs upside down as it is setup in the AK platform. In concept though, the AK is quite similar to the Sturmgewehr line since the MP/STG family weapons were the first (of what we define as today as) assault rifles in history which is subsequently where the name even comes from (sturmgewher literally msans storm rifle with storm meaning assault). The AK platform was only the 2nd family of weapons of this concept in history so that partially explains why they share similar aspects and vaguely similar appearance. The stock is more like a M1 Garand but there are ofher less obvious similarities too especially when compared with the Sturmgewehr. The trigger groups of both the AK and M1 are evolutions of the Browning double hook system first used in Auto-5 with both systems being simple when compared to the various trigger groups/fire control systems of the Sturmgewehr line. The two guns also both utilize cam tracks in their design while the German one does not. I do think it's clear that Kalashnikov that was influenced by the Sturmgewehr design but more definitely more directly influenced by Garands work

    I love that Kalashnikov did not want and hated 5.45mm and wanted to modernize 7.62mm. He blamed USA and their adoption of 5.54mm during the Vietnam War for the Soviet brass coming up with the thought "Well, if America adopted this round, they did it for a reason, let's adopt a similar round." Some history for you, the Afghans during the Soviet invasion in the 80's called the 5.45mm the "poison bullet" because of the rounds tendency to tumble when hitting flesh & leaving keyhole shaped exit wounds. 🫡🇺🇦 Keep up the good work Starsky.
