- World's largest kinetic art sculpture unveiled at Changi Airport
SINGAPORE, 4 July 2012 -- Passengers and airport visitors entering the Departure Check-in Hall at Singapore Changi Airport's Terminal 1 (T1) can expect to stop in their tracks and be captivated by a new art installation. Kinetic Rain, as it is titled, takes pride of place at the terminal, enthralling visitors with its fluidity, distinctive shapes, elegant and refined movements and precision-perfect technology.
Kinetic Rain, installed as part of T1's recent refurbishment, is the icon of the revamped Departure Check-in Hall. This specially commissioned sculpture, a first in an airport globally, comes as a pair, each installed several metres apart from each other and visible from many areas of the Departure Check-in Hall.
Kinetic Rain is made up of 1,216 bronze droplets that transform elegantly into multiple shapes, akin to poetry in motion. Carrying an aviation theme, the key element in every shape shows the movement of flight through slow, fluid movements. Some of the more recognisable shapes include an aeroplane, hot air balloon and a kite. One can also make out a dragon and a flock of birds amongst the 16 different programmed segments.
Each droplet is connected to motors installed in the ceiling of the Departure Check-in Hall. The motors contain a high precision rotary encoder which keeps track of the exact position of each droplet. A computer programme is used to control the movement of the droplets to form Kinetic Rain's unique shapes and patterns. A video on the making-of Kinetic Rain can be viewed here.
Kinetic Rain was created over a span of 20 months. Artists, programmers and technologists were engaged to analyse the space available at T1 and conceptualise a masterpiece that would be representative of the new terminal. The refurbished T1 is aptly themed 'Tropical City' in keeping with Singapore's garden city status and where rain, is very much a part of the tropical climate.
Mr Yeo Kia Thye, Senior Vice President for Airport Operations, Changi Airport Group, said, "When we decided to upgrade Terminal 1 in 2008, we were mindful that people have fond memories of the terminal including the old Mylar Cords, the circular curtain of water that straddled three stories of the building. We wanted an art sculpture, which we found in Kinetic Rain, that was able to add the signature touch linking back to T1's illustrious past in a new and exciting way.
"With more than a thousand raindrops working together in harmony, Kinetic Rain also symbolises the thousands in the airport community who work together every day to provide our passengers and visitors with a positively surprising and memorable Changi Experience."
An audio commentary and official video are also available for visitors who wish to know more about Kinetic Rain. All they have to do is scan the QR code present at the display boards at the T1 Departure Check-in Hall with their smartphones. RIP. Rest in pieces.
When I was in the airport in the night, it was all quiet, and seeing those raindrops, it felt so relax and peaceful.
I would take about 2 hours more time to stay at the airport ... watching this ... great ... thank you!
I love the energy of the man describing the sculpture! What great fun they have had creating this wondrous piece!
I came from the video where a woman was destroying it cause she was pulling it😂😂😂😂
@Alondra Rodriguez Me too
Me three
Me four
what the hack
Sad to see this beautiful piece is damaged :(
TheCookieraider135 by the girl?
Hæ thërę potatos I've been seeing a lot of people comment recently on this. Did CZcams recommend it to everyone?
By that one recommended video
A butterfly Yup.
A China woman who missed her flight destroyed it.
3:28 to skip the intro
Thx dude!
Sirake thank uuuuuuu 😘
Truly an modern art piece without the stilted, unmoving wall piece. Fluid and mesmerizing!
Thank you to the creators and to the Singapore Government.
Best part about being half-Finnish half-Singaporean
You can feel pride for both at the same time when it comes to this.
Of course. He recorded it vertically.
Breath taking!
Kinetic sculptures.. they have something magic about them..
Amazing, Beautiful, Intriguing.... Thank you for sharing this gift with the world.
Wonderful ! went there and took some footage ! Good to relax at Changi Terminal 1 with Kinetic Rain !
I would like to watch this beautiful sculpture all day, but I enjoyed the introduction and seeing something of the mechanics of this artwork's engineering. Very nice, and thank you for posting it!
This is amazing piece of engineering, So beautiful and relaxing to watch, enjoyed the sound track. Thanks
Just Awesome!
Sincrônico e harmonioso! Gostei
Amazing! Thanks for the video!
Awesome and beautiful. Love it! That must be one of the lovely attractions there at Changi which helped it find favor with travelers and win so many awards, even the best airport in the world....
It WAS
So beautiful, so wonderful to watch for meditation. Please could you make a DVD so that I could have it on my TV screen at home in Australia? If you can, how can I buy one? Margaret
aaaw this is just fantastic! thanks :-)
i was there few hours ago !! this is amaze me !! 😍😍😍
Urgot is impressed... Hyper Kinetic Position Reverser
Amazing.
a real beauty.....
I was here today. I love it
It's still there as of a few weeks ago
i left singapore while they the mylar string and when i came back it was the kinetic rain and i was like HOLY SHIT THAT IS AWSOME!!!
Cool!
Really AWESOME. I like the music played during the drop performance. Does anybody know the song tittle and the author?
But someone broke it
superb....
The 10% showing of sculpture in motion was great, absolutely outstanding. The 90% time talking and close-ups of the drops was to say in the least was a waste of time.
Please make a video of nothing but the piece in motion, you would get nothing but posiitve comments as well as allowing the viewers to feel the real beauty of the work.
Awe & Wonderful~ i have Crystal Tear Drops in All Of My Windows ~ While i play at "Tinker Toys"~ You Have Created My Dream ~ Thank You !
excellent
nice job
You can see another project using water droplets and strobes on our channel EpidemicVideo: The 3D Water Matrix (2014) designed to create animated water droplets artworks.
The 3D Water Matrix premiered at Cité des sciences et de l’industrie of Paris from April 2014 to January 2015 and was exhibited last year at ZKM, Karlsruhe and MACRO Testaccio in Rome.
It is currently exhibited at Power Station of Art in Shanghai until the 30th of July before to come back to Europe at Halles de Schaerbeek in Brussels in October and Le Manège, Mauberge in November.
Since the premiere, three artists have been commissioned to produce artworks for this project : Shiro Takatani (Japan), Christian Partos (Sweden) and Ulf Langheinrich (Germany).
The 3D Water Matrix got a CODAaward in 2015.
Other commissions are on process.
So cool! Are the raindrops on cables?
I always thought kinetic sculptures needed no engines or motors to work.
and even more: What's with the vertical video bit at the end of this otherwise interesting and beautifully filmed and edited piece?
"Dude, we need more of the actual thing"
"Thanks God I got my iPhone"
I agree subtitles are neccessary but Singapore's first language is English, mind you.. we're the only Asian country that has it so.
Beautiful art and then you have a crazy that destroys it! What is wrong with people that they must ruin things!
breath taking, absolutely beautiful, but you take 90% of the video talking instead of showing... I saw the video about it, sounded like it was made by the designers, but now I have to see other videos to actually see whats that.
.
one of the first rules of cinema: show, don't tell.
.
but still... unbelievably amazing!!! honestly incredible sculpture
Super
Did you guys see that vid of a lady who destroyed it?
Yes
@Alondra Rodriguez yes
@Alondra Rodriguez Are you serious?
That's what brought me here🤣🤣
cool
What is helping the drops with the movement without string?
can users or any external factors affect the behavior?
wish i was there to see it:(
I went to eu on terminal one early this year. never seen the kinetic balls flowing up and down??????
This sculpture is bigger than most Singaporean homes.
similar to BMW that won D/AD or Cannes if not mistaken
is it running on free radiant energy? otherwise its not nice.. it should be perpetum without any external energy input
Pretty sure BMW has one of these with 748 Spheres.
"it's like making a movie, except it's not a movie"
wow! could you tell me what is the software?
How about you buy one and support the artists?
Just kidding..
I will take a stop over at this airport rather than a direct flight (if my final destination is not this ato ofc)
The video starts at 3:30.
kinetic hershey's :)
where is HD when you need it?
You're just jealous that this is true beauty.
anyone know the music?
Beautiful sculpture, but rain drops, aren't tear shaped
to much info behind it, title should have said this was about the technical details.
any idea which company dose this kind of job ? thanks
1:30 Blender!
people are gonna miss their flights
Tape " Waiting Time " on CZcams
One of them got stuck
One of your pixels has burnt out, and another is missing.
Yes, there should be a law against it... I'm sure there is now in SG! ;-)
the guy at 1:06, was anybody else reminded of Pewdiepie?
Automation Backhoff....
now one of them is broken lol
It must be very expensive. Only Changi Airport can afford to buy it.
Actually two were
/watch?v=NXuQnDeIyY8&feature=related HD version, you're welcome!
I thought this was in Thailand. I've been through both international airports in Thailand and Singapore but can't remember where it was.
I'd love to go there and tangle all of them up into my own "Fuck you" sculpture! Tangle tangle tangle
hi,
i want to buy this for my company , where can i buy?
thanx
cyprus engineering I know a company that makes these.
our company manufactuere this, we regitered patent in china, dmx winch motor, with steel wire, we focus on Kinetic system, dmx winch, lifting balls , stage visuals. my email is eastsun002@eastsunlite.com,welcome talk.
This was made by ART+COM AG in Berlin. You probably will find plenty of resources there.
We make sculptures with code
You find one lol
Anyone else think it completely unnecessary for there to be subtitles? Sure they have accents (German?) but they probably speak better English than most young English speaking teens.
That guy reminds me of Jim Carrey. LOL
you don't say
Jump to 3:30
It's cool...but really? The video showing the full view is from a cell phone or something handheld? The main video director was to artsy to show the full scale sculpture and just zoomed in on the individual droplets? Le sigh.
4minutes of talking, 2 minute of actually showing what it's all about
Yup, the idea is totally not unique. I've seen quite a lot similar "kinetic sculptures", just look at the related videos and you can see almost identical installation in BMW museum.
This is my friends father and my friends friends father
check out my vid of this same sculpture. Sentient Kinetic Rain copper Sculpture
its pewds
And why should it be that way? Who are you to enforce boundaries on others' artwork? Are you confusing the concept of the project with the title assuming it was related to environmental issues? I'm not sure what is your reasoning behind using self-propulsion other than the idea of having it use "pure" kinetic energy which doesn't correlate to what the artwork is about.

why can't they let their work speak for itself?
I hate being cynical but I honestly wasn't all that impressed. Then I thought how expensive were these 608 "High Percision" motors =\
4:34 fail - Vertical Video Syndrome
Now some stupid PRC ruin it
And now it is ruinedT^T
Too bad its ruined now
And a bullshit woman just destroy it
