I love the Game Gear...
Things you miss:
Defenders of Oasis ( RPG, Round Based Fight, very niche Story ),
AxeBattler ( Style of Zelda II Adventure, very well made ).
Crystal Warriors ( Round Based Strategic Fight System, very nice made ).
Some of the graphics are amazing for a handheld of the time.
The backlight was innovative too
and the battery life. Joking. Love this console
Agreed I struggle to choose between the gameboy, Game Gear and Atari Lynx at the time and got a game gear Christmas of 1991 I ever looked back yes the gameboy has better battery life and a lot more titles but the game gear will always have a special place in my heart…… playing shinobi 🥷 while watching jet on gladitiors on a Saturday night come on which teenage boy didn’t have a think for Jet 😂😂
This list is fantastic! You've really done your homework! I always go crazy that people talk about SMS ports on the Game Gear and not the more original games like the FANTASTIC Power Strike 2...and there it was, the first game! Love it.
I love playing those power ranger game gear games, so easy to pick up and play. It's like a fighting game with some beat em up elements
I loved playing Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya at night with headphones in. I know I gotta be up for school in 3 hours, but screw it.

I still love all the Shining Force games. I wish SF3 would get a localised Steam release
Nice list, and a strong line up of games shows just how good the Game Gear was as a Hand Held Games machine.
I feel like the exclusive tails games and battletoads would make the list.

Solid list! I agree very much. But I would say that although Sonic Chaos looks definitively better, the first GG Sonic is the best designed and balanced Sonic game ever made by Sega. A masterpiece.

Don’t know how I missed this video but damn! What a great collection of games for the game gear!!
I can definitely appreciate the time that went into making this video but there is one glaring omission here and it's RoboCop vs The Terminator. This Sega Game Gear port is hands down my favorite version. The graphics mimic those found on Genesis, the music is distinct and memorable.. even the occasional voice sample makes it into the game. Packed with 15 levels full of secret areas, hidden lives and weapons.. this is one game I always come back to. Seriously, it should have made this list.
There are a lot of great games for GG. Road Rash, Jurassic Park, Batman Returns, Lemmings and some others are also worth playing.

Did anyone ever play Popils? It was an incredible puzzle game, but I never see it it any best of lists. It was also one of the only Game Gear games to have battery-backup enabled saving.
I had that game as a kid. Amazing game, among the best GG games together with GG Shinobi and Sonic
I still have it since childhood, I LOVE Popils, one of the best puzzle games I've played. I spent like thousands of hours on it, and creating stages was addicting as hell.
Fun Fact about it: it was made by Bubble Bobble creator.

i'm not a h u g e fan of the game, because while, yes, it's very technically impressive, the gameplay is lacking and the homing shots just straight up one-shots anything you aim at

I don't know if puting some of the most expensive japanese imports as must have is really fair, since most game gear collectors can't have them and might be a long time to get them when they start collecting. To me what separates a must have list from a best games list is that the former is more akin to what every collector should realistically have in their game gear collection, they MUST have these games. There are a ton of 5 dollar GG games that I think everyone should have or search for.

very great games of list, but I missed some really good ones like Asterix,Psychic World, Aladdin, Master of Darkness, Devilish, Mortal Kombat II, Ristar, Dynamite Headdy and Wonderboy. It is an incredible handheld that I still enjoy a lot in my free time.
Gamegear was ahead of its time. If i remember it was like 180-200 dollars which was alot back then.
Good list but also need a Bundle of Double AA Batteries for GG because it is also Battery Drain machine.

Batman Returns belongs on this list, considering its more forgiving than its Master System counterpart and plays insanely well for a port.
Excelent choice of games! Maybe the battery life is a big problem, but the game catalog Is beautifull.

The best game on GG was Phantasy Star. Once you got the master system converter LOL. I played that game to death and probably beat it 3x. Man those enemy graphics were AMAZING.
I am truly sad that Road Rash did not make this list. I played that so much on GG.

Great list. But you missed one important game in my opinion. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I'm not kidding you. That game is a freaking masterpiece. So many cool moves and a solid cast of Power Ranger choice. Everyone plays slightly different and your Zords really help bring the action to life. I highly recommend Power Rangers on the Game Gear.
Both games are good but the movie adaptation didn't require the unlocking of Tommy because he was already available by default in the main story

@matt the first part of the game is based on Season 2 when Lord Zedd took over as the villain, while the last few stages are adapted from the movie.

Just bought myself a modded game gear with the mcwill screen, had no idea woody pop was an breakout clone so just ordered it, devilish is another good game in the genre

They could have make Shinobi II: Silent of Fury in Mega Drive too. I know I usually like the Shinobi series in a long time but I think it should've belong here. On the Mega Drive, they had The Revenge of Shinobi and Shinobi 3, these only 2 games in this system.
My favorite game gear game is actually a sports game, Evander Holyfield boxing. Awesome game!

I agree that as someone who's been gaming since the NES, and has a pretty big retro game collection, IMO the Shining Force series is the number one hidden-gem franchise. TBH most older games do not hold up with what we have today. Nostalgia is a powerful drug that tricks our perceptions, but the Shining Force series produced some amazing turn based strategy games for any Fire Emblem fans out there looking to expand their horizons.
The OG Shining Force is my #1 all-time favorite Genesis game. Just an absolute masterpiece.
Devilish was the best game made for the game gear, extremely underrated.
I sold my game gear that was used for 80$ on eBay, I bought it brand new at Toys R us because it had color and the game boy didn’t, didn’t know how much better the graphics were until i played it.... everyone at school had a game boy though lol 😂 I think I was the only one with a game gear.... when the kid got the gamegear in the mail (one of my prized possessions since a child) / should have kept it ... he was so happy wrote the best review lol, I think I threw in miss Pac-Man, sonic 2, and taz goes to mars
It was a difficult portable system, but I couldn't get a TV in my room, so this was the best option. Plugged it into the wall and didn't have to disturb my family trying to watch TV

One time I was playing, sonic 3 maybe? on my game gear on the way to the family cabin and I got to the final boss fight and the batteries died! I was sooo pissed off that I never played that game again lol
Sonic 3...? That never released for the Game Gear, it was a Genesis exclusive. You probably were playing Sonic Chaos or Sonic Triple Trouble.

the gg has such good graphics. nintendo 8bit and gg 8bit are a true diffrence. gg almost looks like 16bit compared to nes.
The game gear can display more colours than the Mega Drive. Just can't handle as many sprites, parallax layers or resolution. Fantasy Zone on game gear really shows off the colour capabilities
@@sloppynyuszi the pallet is bigger. but not on screen, gamegear always amazed me graphic wise. a very special system. it will never and could never outdo a genesis graphic wise. genesis tough was kinda poor on colours, just 64 and mostly 30 or some or screen.
I loved my game gear but my parents hated my battery needs. They didn't believe me how awful it was on power.
Thank goodness for warehouse stores that sold batteries in bulk.

i never really played the game gear but i played the saturn version of Panzer dragon on the music is so good.

It's really overpriced for what you get. $200 for a decent Space Harrier clone is insane when there's already a good port of Space Harrier on the system.

A like your list, but there are a vary good game miss: Power Rangers mighty morphin, X-Men Legacy, Terminator, mk2, Sonic triple trouble, dragon Crystal, psichico world, ristar,tails Adventure, both Asterix.
Fatal Fury Is on my top 10. Year After year i bought around 60-80 games for my GG. Ooh almost forget out run

I just got mine for 50 bucks too! Mine came with super columns sonic 2 sonic and tail combo cart taz-mania and shinobi 2 and the official game gear carrying case and the lady even put 6 batteries in it!
Panzer dragoon was pretty bad tbh.
