I know exactly what you mean. I have a 2003 manual tdi with 340,000 miles on it. I too have upgraded to a stage 4 Malone tune, egr delete and removal, vnt 17 turbo, larger injectors, down pipe and straight pipe all the way back....I have 175 hp.at the wheels and right at 300 ft.lbs.of torque......I still get 40+ mpg......45 if all hwy.@ 65....looking forward to 500,000 miles hopefully.

I bought a 2001 Golf TDI brand new in 2001 and drove it until 2019. I had 393K miles on it when I sold it, and the only reason I sold it was they were selling the mk7 dieselgate cars for a song. I sold it to a guy who flew down to Orlando from Michigan and drove it home. The mk4 now has about 440K miles on it and is still treating the new owner well. I miss that car.

I have an 03 mk4 wagon similar and I love taking trips in it . I got the wagon because I do have a family and we love taking it on long hauls. It’s comfy fun to drive abs has plenty of room. We live in the sf Bay Area and take it down to so cal quite frequently. I never get tired of driving it long distances! Not to mention all the looks you get pulling into a gas station but not needing to pull up to a pump! The clatter loud and proud. If you see a silver tinted out wagon with a tdi club license plate frame on the I-5 that’s me !

I have an 03 TDI wagon, only 120k miles on it too, it's near stock and though all the plastic is falling apart it still drives like it's brand new.

I have a 2002 TDI diesel and I love it.. it's maintained regularly..it has 208,000 miles no leaks knocks or anything. I'm going to redo the interior soon..I agree the cup holder wasn't thought through because of blocking the radio.

Very cool. I have same one a 2002, owned for 4 years now. Overpaid for it, but it had only 64,000mi with full service history. So far so good. Thanks for sharing. Biggest repair I've done was the Injection pump that I found out later on didn't need to be done.

Excellent video. I have owned a good number of VWs starting with a 1977 Rabbit (gas), a 1984 Rabbit L (diesel), and a 2004 Jetta wagon much like yours but I bought it brand new and I think it had the updated engine (maybe not as legendary as the ALH). The thing is, once I could afford better cars, I started buying Volvos. But all these years later I have no desire to own another Volvo. I want another VW diesel. My wife is totally against it. I loved all of my VWs for many of the reasons you have mentioned. And then there is some irrational love of the brand combined with diesel power that just attracts my attention.

Felix Del Rio 15 wheels and 38psi in the tires. Make sure you use the best oil and fluids you can afford to buy. Do not drive it slow; these engines need to be pushed hard to keep the intake/EGR clean.
