We still used them in the 1980's out in the counties...good units, rarely failed!

Always loved when they cleared one call, hoping for a break and Sharon, the dispatcher: "One Adam 12 Clear AND a call....."

Switch to Hi-Lo then move the selector switch 1/2 way to yelp & it will sound like a dog barking. We used that all the time while responding to calls. We called it "Bark the Dog". :)

Federal Interceptors were great sirens. The PA feature on all that I ever used was always scratchy and crackly but the siren features were great. My favorite was the hi-lo.

    That's a PA20A series 2E - the 1970s version of the Interceptor.
The siren in the Adam-12 TV show is a recording of a mid-1960s PA20 model - an earlier version of the Interceptor with deep low-pitched wail and yelp tones.

nmtoc - You are correct about the siren on ADAM-12 and EMERGENCY! (same siren is used on both shows) was recorded at Universal Studios in 1967 and was a PA20 model from a North Hollywood police unit.

It was so simple back in the late 1960-1970's era. Black and whites had "can lights" pointing to the front and rear with a siren mounted in the center. Two toggle switches controlled the red lights and siren. The other controls allowed you to switch the microphone to the PA setting. I remember one night in Venice Division my partner initiated a traffic stop on Lincoln just north of Washington. The suspect did not want to stop. I thought I had switched the radio over to PA when I pressed the mike and yelled, "Grab a piece of the curb asshole". Three days without pay. Never happened again

Best siren ever made followed by the PA200 which had the same sound as the Interceptor. The PA 300 then came out and I did not care for that.
