Venous ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the veins in the
body. It is commonly used to search for blood clots, especially in the veins of the
leg - a condition often referred to as deep vein thrombosis. Ultrasound does not
use ionising radiation and has no known harmful effects.
The ability of duplex ultrasound to detect DVT in the large veins above the knee is
so good that when the test is positive, no further testing is necessary and treatment
    may be started.
They are larger than superficial veins and are collectively responsible for a larger
volume of blood flow-carrying more than 90 percent of the blood from your lower
    extremities to your heart.
