Next time get those plastic camera bags and you can put a filter over the lens for extra protection. You put a small part of the plastic bag in the filter thread so when you put the filter on its 100% sealed.
I've heard of photographers messing up their cameras they went to bike races or some event they they shoot out different color dust in the air and even a weather sealed camera can get messed up.
One Army photographer did put sand on his Pentax cameras and washed them off but I don't think he took any photos but his camera was fine.
The problem with the Canon 24-70mm f2.8 is it moves in and out and can suck up dust. Sigma had this problem with their older Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 dust was getting into the lens.
