- 48 Hours in St. Pierre is a short travel video. It was made from snippets of HD footage I shot during a weekend in St. Pierre in August of 2014. My main motivation in making a video record of the trip was to provide my readership with a fuller experience of the short holiday. I realized after the tremendous response to a column I had written about the trip in the Weekend Telegram that there was great interest in St. Pierre and Miquelon. Please enjoy this tribute to our closest neighbours and friends from the nearby French islands.

The architecture is very north American. We do not have villages with wood colored houses like this. It looks like very Canadian to me.
That said, the rest is very french, the signalisation, flags, cars, people, language...
I thought it looks very similar to Newfoundland.

@@eccIefechan The area near the port where the boat lands has very solid looking shops unlike the typical NL outport. Stone, I think. You don't find stone in NL except in St John's maybe.
The houses look like the east coast of Canada (likely because of the nearby builders) The houses in the rest of the vast country of Canada 🇨🇦 do not look like that.
Cool video, Karl. Loved seeing the smattering of French cars mixed in with the standard North American fare.
I remember on my trip along the south coast by coast boat (CN Marine) in late June of 1977 that there was a young woman on the coastal boat who was taking her father's Renault to St Pierre to dispose of it to a St Pierre dealer because it met French standards, but it didn't meet New York state standards and couldn't be licensed there! The license plate it bore was from somewhere in the Middle East. As the person accompanying me said, "Imagine a cop writing a ticket for that car." LOLOL! I wonder how many other cars that couldn't be licensed in North America that St Pierre dealer picked up at a fraction of their actual cost, I'm sure.
I've had a train trip to Halifax and ferry trip up to St. John's on my bucket list for ages. I think the itinerary just got one more additional destination. Looks amazing! Just my style. Thanks so much!

As someone who was born in the French mainland (where I spent a number of years) but having spent most of my life in the US, I've always been intrigued by Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon. If the cost of traveling there weren't so prohibitive - it's actually far more expensive to fly there from Montréal than it is to fly to Paris - I would have visited the islands a long time ago.
That's crazy re the $$$, especially being that St Pierre's about 14-15 miles/20 km from Canada. Although I'm guessing you could drive to the closest point of Canada and, take the ferry over.
It looks like a French town with Newfoundland houses and landscape.
All those gastronomical delights aren't typically found even in St John's.

What a great trip report about this beautiful piece of France that I would enjoy visiting. I live very close to France, in Switzerland, but St. Pierre would be a very long voyage. Maybe one day...
Seen from Europe it looks like an intereseting mix of France and Canada. The houses look more Canadian than French but the town's atmosphere, the shops, the food culture are definitely French. And the mix of French and American carsin the streets is also interesting.

I found out about this slice of Heaven while watching a documentary on the Horses and other gems on this Island. Now I found your video 8 years after its making and like a great wine, it aged perfectly. I live South of Pittsburgh and have contemplated moving to Nova Scotia/Newfoundland. I have spent hours on Google Streets visiting many parts of this wonderful area. One day maybe...

It's not really European. It's heavily subsidized by the French government, I think. With the collapse of the fishery, a lot of young people are leaving for the North American mainland for further education, probably mostly in Quebec?. I was surprised whe I heard about that. I would have thought they would be more at home in France.
@@dinkster1729 Wikipédia says most of the young people go to mainland France for higher education and never come back. And that only some go to Canada instead.
This is a French-speaking territory, who has its own radio , Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon 1 ere , and its own television channel , Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon 1 ere , and Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a collectivity.
I spent 4 and a half days there this summer and loved it. I can't wait to return next summer. I will stay a whole week this time around.

Thank you for making this wonderful video! I found it to be an informative piece about a part of North America (and, in a way, France) that I knew very little about.
Great video. I just spent 4 days there a week ago, and I would say even 4 days is not enough time. We were in St. Pierre and ventured to Ils aux Marins, but did not have time to get to Miquelon, nor did we get to the areas of St. Pierre outside the town limits... something I will do next time for sure. The food was great, as were the bakeries. The locals are amazingly friendly. I will be back again for sure, but I will stay a whole week, and bring my bicycle with me as well.

As french, I'd love take a visit to these "cousins" of across the Atlantic. And bring them a little bit of France to share. And also bring back in my luggage, a little perfume of their little piece of France to them, which they persist so courageously to preserving against all odds. I really hope do it a day. :)

Funny I live in an area with a rather large population and there is not one bakery that produces real French pastries like in Miquelon. Just mass produced crap filled with preservatives and high fructose corn syrup.

You are not Canadian then. Most of us are taught that the French kept St Pierre et Miquelon after their defeat on the plains of Abraham in Quebec City and nothing else, except that the French also kept the French Treaty Shore on the Island of Newfoundland and relinquished it in 1904.

What an advantage to both France & Canada. We both should be able to make this work as a massive tourism & cultural hot spot. I wish a wealthy person from France would gift St. Pierre with a Classic French Car Museum. The unique design of the 1920's & 1930's Classic French Automobile would be a big draw for visitors to this island. Obviously the food is another attraction.
This is very nice.
I spent three days there and would recommend it for sure. They work their own hours though so things are not always open that are supposed to be open. Half work for the French government so that might be part of it.

The prefect of Saint Pierre and Miquelon is assisted in his of her work by a general secretary. In Saint Pierre and Miquelon there are horses , ducks , eagles, mint and nettle.

It's not really 100 percent France, as many of the houses are built in the North American way. You would not see that type of house construction in France.

@@microcosm726 No, look at some of the houses and buildings. You can see the building materials came from Canada and not from France.
@@boink800 Yes but architecturally it's close to the colored constructions you can see in "Les landes" and in "Pays Basque" in France. ;) All the Canada is influenced by this massive home with contrasted colors and composed of one or two upstairs architectura not came from England and that you also can see in all territory of the true old French Louisiana in USA (not the actual Louisiana but a territory that came from south to north of USA).

@@boink800 Yes of course, the geographic situation makes mixing styles mandatory. But don't forget that most styles of construction in the United States come primarily from all over Europe. And not only English people, or even more so, Americans who suddenly invented their own architectural style, their urban style, (like here french name their streets and avenues and not give the, a number for example). USA is an amazing melting pot of European characteristics. :)

Saint Pierre and Miquelon is small and cold. The inhabitants of Saint Pierre and Miquelon are almost white of skin. In Saint Pierre and Miquelon there is hôpital François Dunan , an evangelic church , the square of the general de Gaulle , and the mount of the grand Mortagne.

I got there around 1961 first time.😃 then yrs later round 80.i managed to find a business man from miquelon going home.i was in Fortune penniless..lol.but bekaz of this fine man he took me there through the big waves..Maybe one hr.i was in miquelon then took some boat to st Pierre. It was t too long b4 I tried to bum some money so I could eat..Unfortunately the man I cases was the head of police😂.
He had me thrown unceremoniously from those beautiful islands.
I recall that the houses did not look so good from outside but inside,wow..what a palace.
It was because the insurance is lower if the house looks in bad shape..

The archipelago of Saint Pierre and Miquelon has a highest point , the morne de la grande montagne. Saint Pierre and Miquelon has the hospital François Dunan.
Is there something wrong with "white skin"? St Pierre et Miquelon was given to France because it was so inhospitable. The winning English by the Treaty of 1713 didn't want the French to re-establish themselves in NL. Therefore, the English gave them St Pierre to pursue fishing and some subsistance agriculture and that's it. The English didn't want them on the former French shore of NL. They gave the French the French Treaty Shore which is more northern and on the west coast of NL. A lot of refugees when the Acadians were expelled horribly from their area came to St Pierre and, then, to the West Coast of NL where they could pursue fishing and subsistence farming and not be harassed by the English & American invaders of the former Acadian territory in the Anapolis Valley and the Isthmus of Chignecto. Those parts of NL which were French-speaking up to the arrival of the American forces in the Stephenville area are trying to re-establish the French language today.

It's 19 kilometres from Canada, regardless of the mode of transportation. I don't know what fairies have to do with it, but I'd recommend going by ferry.
Since I'm not from Liberia or Myanmar, I don't know about miles.

1.5 hrs. And of Oct 2018 there is not a pier at Fortune that will accommodate cars from the new SP ferry. So still walk on.

Saint-Pierre et Miquelon is an Overseas collectivity. The Overseas Collectivities (COM) have a special status and institution and enjoy relatively greater independence. Indeed, the COM are nations distinct from France. They have this power and competence to manage their own administrations. Clearly, the COMs have an autonomous assembly which fixes the conditions of acceptability of laws coming from the Metropolis. Unlike the Overseas Departments and Regions (DROM), the COMs enjoy considerable autonomy. To become an Overseas Department and Region (DROM), the population of Saint-Pierre and Miquelon would have to face the request and the French government would accept the request.
