    This is one of my favorite videos ever. Not only is there sheer delight (as always) in Tuba's Skinny's happy, snappy music, but the entire street scene has such authenticity. A stray collarless dog wanders by, searching for food, and a couple passes with such genuine, unbridled joie de vivre as they dance down the street with impromptu exuberance.

    One of my favorites. Ewan Bleach really rocks on the clarinet-this tune is a great showcase for the clarinet, and Ewan is inspired-and Shaye's cornet solo is up to her usual fantastic standard. This clip is also one of the best for the visual Barbabus where his whole lanky body gets possessed by the music-I love it! And I'm surprised that he doesn't actually take flight-not to mention a fine, rockin' performance by the musical Barnabus. Robin Rapuzzi's washboard breaks are particularly nifty in this clip-his humor is amazing. Kudos, indeed, to the whole band. And especially to Shaye, who keeps the whole thing smokin'. In addition, the ambiance with the dog and the dancers makes me weep with joy. Tuba Skinny!

    I have said this b4 and I will say it again: there is something about Old School Dixieland/New Orleans Jazz that is so much more musical than what followed. Granted, there were a lot of profound innovations in Bepop and Coltrane's advant gaurd jazz (sorry if I screwed up the nomenclature re Coltrane. I am a layperson who just likes jazz). But, imho, it is so much more difficult to fake a Dixirland style solo ( a solo such as these guys seem to play effortlessly) compared to faking a solo which would pass muster in a post-Bepop world. The stuff we hear in this video requires a true sense of melody and the ability to produce melodic variations on a theme. Post Bepop solos really do not require those abilities. With Bepop solos, you can get away with going up and down scales provided you use a good swing eighth rhythm, hit chord pitches on the beat, throw in a few triplet figures and melodic jumps of an octave or a fith, and ocassionally mess with the listener's expectations by playing grooups of 5 or 7 notes. If you can do this, you will be meeting the baseline of what defines an adequate post Bepop jazz soloist. Most audiences and even many Jazz musicians will nod in approval. Those elements can be acquired largely by simple repeated route practice and without developing a true ability to create melodies or to develop melodic variations of a tune written by someone else. On the other hand, the type of solo you expect from someone like Louis Armstrong does require a strong melodic sense. These guys have it. Trombone Shortly has it. I Suppose the band's name is a bit of homage to" Mr. Shorty." My takeaway is that this Jazz roots revival band recognize Trombone's ability to be melodic in that old school manner even while adding in many musical elements unknown in the early years of Jazz. I could be wrong. Its just a hunch. But, I imagine their choice of naming themselves in a way that would call to mind a very established player indicates their approval of his approach and their own performanced provide evidence of what sort of musical ability they consider worthy of admiration. They likely would use different terminology to express the sentiment, but my suspicion is that they might agree.

    • @douglaspalenschat7451
      @douglaspalenschat7451 Před 3 lety +4

      I agree with your bemoaning the loss of melody in modern music. Even modern songs seem to be not much more than Gregorian chants with a “whoa whoa” thrown in once in a while. Whatever happened to the melodies that used to haunt us throughout the day or which we whistled or hummed because we couldn’t remember the words?
      Yes: these musicians expertly play their jazz constructions without losing sight of the melody. Goosebumps!
