  • The world we live in today worships the Specialist - the person who knows more and more about less and less. I’m not convinced that’s the best option for our future. I think the time has come for the Generalist to be taken more seriously, for the good of a more equal society.
National business coach Paul Raisbeck from Middlewich will explore the idea that the world needs fewer experts, as he talks about the idea of generalist versus specialist in the modern world. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

"I'd like to see a world where all ideas are treated equally, a world where each idea is viewed on it's own merit, rather than judgment being made based on the background of the person speaking it". - Paul Raisbeck.
Agreed, as one of my mentor says 'it doesn't matter if the idea came from a 2 year old, a good idea is a good idea'.

Thanks, Sancha. It made so much difference to me when I realised that being a Generalist can be a good thing in this Specialist world. Hopefully the video will help others to see themselves positively in that sense too.

The identification of experts with specialists is a mistake. In my opinion, generalists are also experts, just of a different kind.
If I were to take a guess what differentiates the two extremes, it would be that expert specialists are good at solving well defined problems, and expert generalists are good at formulating well defined problems.

It's so true that nobody wants to see this video where it's the word Generalist. If you change to specialist, you probably get millions of views... Lol.
    Proud to be a generalist!😄

Anyone can't have a good idea, and every idea have quality, and most important thing is idea isn't that valuable.
Reducing private car usage (by encourage biking and trains) is an excellent idea, while hyperloop and cybertruck and autonomous driving is a terrible idea.
If value of a crude idea is worth an iron ore, value of a completed work is a completed car. Iron ore with same mass of a completed car only worth around several hundreds bucks while a completed car worth at least 10,000 bucks.
