Don Tapscott: Four principles for the open world

very nice summarization. together with this video, this is some pretty stunning material.
The clip on the murmuring was simply amazing. It explained a lot of things(graphically) that we are beginning to see with the advancement of the internet.
That is what he means about transparency though. This is what the talk is about: setting down some important guidelines for the open world to work properly. Secretly taking data to help marketing campaigns is not transparent. Using data that we all know is being communicated (eg. Facebook) is actually a really useful tool.
Being the pessimist that I am, Internet is a very sharp double edged sword. While it certainly gives individuals the ability to collaborate on a scale and time line previously unimaginable, it gives the people in power the same ability. It tracks your every move, captures every keystroke and worst of all, archives it forever.

The basic idea, I couldn't agree more. However, there is a problem in the research of pharmaceutical industry in the latter stages of research in that how to keep the data that is needed to do meaningful analysis anonymous. The data would need to be processed first which is expensive (making it less likely for the companies to do it) and you might lose some important data in the "purging". This idea would be great for basic research though and I think of "growdsourcing" some of my own research.
Edinburgh is in Scotland.
A good counterpoint to this is the second episode of Adam Curtis' "All Watched Over By Machines of Loving Grace". There are a good few inacuracies and ambiguities in it, but I sympathise with Curtis' overall claims. Give it a watch.

Than, you are the lucky one as far as the nationality is concerned. I am a Croatian, which is better than if I were e.g. from Uganda, but my country suffers of all transitional illnesses one can imagine.
My choices were either to go to Sweden and have a decent life, but to be a foreigner my whole life, far from my family and old friends - or I could have stayed here and try to change my country, even though the local mindset is not in my favour. I chose the second... we'll see how it goes :-)

No, I'm more curious to explore an application of Pachelbel's Canon that OP would ever find acceptable. As i suspect "those violins" are probably "a bit much" for him in ALL circumstances.
Curiously the thing that makes this all possible is the Hard Disk Drive. Still spinning away silently after 50 years. Not enough solid state to compete with it. No one ever talks about it.

For openness you need trust. But I think we would be crazy to trust either the government or large corporations with our personal information.

Funny how this works, his presentation is full of optimism about the collective mind, but when you scan some comments down here you are brought back to reality fairly quickly. This is exactly how the collective mind works, you get input from different sources immediately in the comments, so we are in fact already "doing this"...
Conclusion: although I liked the talk, we don't need no revolution initiated by Mr Tapscott.

Very lucid and well-considered principles. Of course, these are ideals with a moral application. Datamiam is correct in saying that money equals power, but Tapscott is also correct in saying that virtuous behavior brings wealth. They are two sides of the same concept. Both of you are making essentially the same observation with different moral conclusions.Hmm, reminds me of the Malthus debate. To me, these are all observable results of known quantities. Science rules!

Thank you. I have a a friend who lives in Göteborg with his family. He is an engineer in Ericsson, while his wife is a dentist and they live very happy life. One of the things that talks in favour of Sweden is the fact that you are very nice to your immigrants.
In order to avoid the impression that I'm kissing your butt, I must tell you that you have an absolutely awful weather ;-)
I think technology is a sharp double edged sword: internet connection and social media can be very useful, but they don't necessary make people free; on the contrary, they put everyone under constant peer pressure and make our every move istantly available to government and corporations. I work as a marketer for a very small company and still thanks to social media I am able to quickly get personal information about people to turn them into prospects and archive these data. Is this real freedom?

I'm talking about the general or average mindset of the population. In each society there are better and worse examples, of course...
People in Finland live very modestly. Even though they are very rich society (comparing to vast majority of countries in the World) they do not drive expensive cars, do not build big or fancy houses, they do not like any kind of pushy or flashy behaviour... Instead they invest in future and education. Japan and Sweden have the similar culture....

Data is the most expensive thing in the world, costing all of us when it is kept hidden. The US Navy was not allowed to speak about raising the piers in Norfolk, and the EPA was not allowed to release a report under the Bush Administration. Data about conditions affecting populations needs to be reported out as soon as it is mined.

Nice idea, but current knowledge about these formations tells us that no information is exchanged between the birds, they simply act on very simple instincts like 'maintain distance', 'keep flying', and the complexity of the movements arise from the ensemble. Too bad he emphasized on the incentive that "being virtuous brings more money". Here's some attempt at wisdom: money is raw power, equivalent to the power of a politician. With a lot of money you can influence the world, by using it to accelerate the development of the areas you are interested in. Now who gets big amounts of money? Do we elect them? Are they the wisest people on Earth? Well, really wise people don't seek, nor are given the money. We are governed by the greedy. I hope it ends someday.

I think a true collective intelligence is not something that we can affect, it would exist beyond us just like our own thoughts are beyond the grasp of any single neuron. Calling any collective intelligence good or bad is irrelevant.
There is a danger about this too; if the transparency is a one way mirror, it will give way too much power to the one side. We need to force transparency, force new more open models on a global scale. The music industry would not change willingly, but will do so or die because technology won't reverse. People may not realize how important the battle for freedom on internet is in a historical context. This will go the more-open-world route, or the totalitarian one with the corporations ruling...
Again, there are many pieces of intellectual property which corporations aren't forfeiting and you'll probably won't get to access the main pieces of intellectual property which fuels the corporation.
Or maybe you will.
It really all depends on whether or not having you as a consumer experiment with Coke's recipe will benefit the corporation on the long run.
This is really just a call to corporations not to be stupid when it comes to what they keep private. Everything is usable.

The personal information you can get, are put on the net, by the people themselves. True, there are examples of companies with poor security, who have leaked personal information, but mostly, it's our own choice, what we share on the net. And that's pretty free to me. :-)
Maybe so, but here's the thing, technology always improve production so more and more people are going to be left off and their purchasing power will decrease over time creating a paradox in the market system. I believe that it is happening right now all over the world; so money itself will become less and less important because of this. U c; the monetary system is obsolete, we can produce abundant food and provide for everyone, we don't need to create wealth, to me, that a mind-set of the past.
Or you could just open source an effort to test coke extensively and unlock the recipe. Recipe information isn't copyrightable after all.

Such thing as "real freedom" does not exist in life. You can only be free when you die - but that does not matter to you at that point.
In case I've lost you...philosophy, religion and discipline are much less interesting when you're a kid than the vast labrinth of free knowledge, but these are the disciplines that grant you freedom.
My generation (I'm 30) suffered from the lack of discipline, and I still suffer in many areas of my life because of this, while my parents didn't have to. Will my kids suffer from the lack of guiding principles, morals and structured general knowledge?

The only part, I think, that I disagree with him is the "collaboration" part of openness.
