A classic. Beef up your chord vocabulary and right hand strumming technique.
Hearing these chords ring out from my 12 string guitar after viewing your simple instructions brought tears to my eyes. Thank you for the free downloadable song sheets and your excellent teaching!!!
Thank you Lenny - much appreciated!
Shane
Oooh, I would love to hear this song played on a 12 string.!!!! You good sir have inspiredme to learn this song so I can try it on a 12 string!! Thank you sooo much!
Thank Shane! This is a very useful tutorial (specially for beginners like me). Here in Brazil I tried to find a lesson like this with no success. Great job! I just love Americas's songs.
Thank you Pedro - that's so great. Very glad to hear it has helped you. Have fun with it!
Shane
That music Era was a cool time to be a teenager. The music had personalities and it was a easier time of stress. You could relate to the words more with meaning. I miss those years.
Great tutorial of a classic tune! "America" one of the most under-rated bands of all time. You have a new subscriber........... :)
Big thank you!
I've just discovered your channel while searching for a friend who just received a guitar for Christmas. I'm so glad I stumbled upon it. While there are some great teachers out there in the CZcams world, you in my opinion have to be one of the best. I believe one of your strong attributes is; you understand "how" people learn, and you naturally adapt your style towards that. Thanks to you I'm now tackling some picking.
A big thank you for your kind words. I’m super happy that you will benefit from this channel. I can send you sheets for any of the songs - just ask! Email me directly from my website:
www.shanesimpson.com
Just hit the contact button. I’ll send sheets right away. I do not collect or otherwise abuse email addresses. I have to figure out how to make the sheets downloadable from the CZcams videos.
Best to you,
Shane
I just found this channel, too, and it’s by far the best one I’ve come across. No need to keep looking around once you’ve found Shane. 🎸🎼
A big thank you Karen - hope you are having fun with it. Happy to send you any of the sheets you might want. Cheers! Shane
Guitar At Work I’m having a great time with this. Your approach to teaching the chords and hand movements is so much easier to pick up than any other channels I’ve tried. You’re very laid back and don’t do any showboating, it’s all about the learning process and having fun while doing it.
I would love to have some sheet music for a few songs. That will help a lot. I’ll get a list together and try to keep it to a minimum. : )
Thx. 🎸
Thank you Karen!
Shane
That was so great, i had no idea I would be able to play one of my fave songs of America's but you got me to learn it easily...thank you so much.
Thank you, Shane! Love your videos! Please keep them coming!
Thanks Rob - really appreciate your comments - have fun with it!

Awesome video! I've literally been playing for just 10 days, and I can't believe I'm able to keep up with this great tune. Full disclosure:. I'm sure I've watched the video about 20 times. 😊
Glad to hear it kemigyrl11 - thanks for commenting - happy to have you with us here!
Shane
Nice
Shane, I love your videos. Awesome. I just wanted to ask a favour. As a lefty, it would be great if guitar teachers referred to the strumming hand as the strumming hand, not the right hand. It would make it easier for us lefties. Cheers.
Thanks Mike - I totally get that. Hard habit to kick. Cheers, Shane
I want to say thank you for your excellent guitar lessons, I've learned a lot your awesome

Shane

Thanks for that - hope you have fun with it! Shane
Another brilliant tutorial ! Thank You. Also Thank You for the sheet music and chord diagrams. Could You do a session on "Letter From America" by the Proclaimers ? I am a Yank living in England and this song always reminds me of my hometown in the States. Thanks again.
Thank you Robert - much appreciated - great song suggestion and I have added it to the list!
Shane

Nice job brother.
thanks Shane, hi again from Australia :)
Hope you enjoyed it Fabian - all the best from freezing Canada!
Shane
Yeah, good job on the strumming which is the real key to this one. A tip that may help some slightly more advanced players is this - you'll notice when he plays that Gmaj7 the pinky is kinda dangling over the 3rd string just above fret 4. MY tip is just press it down adding a closed B note. To my ear it tightens up the sound on the top of the chord you wont miss that open G string as you have G held down in the bass. the stacked third B up and over to D up and over to the top F# really is a sweeter sound - which is why a lot of players if they don t need the bottom end will play this chord as a diagonal line from 4th string fret 5 ending on that top F# using a 1 2 3 4 fingering in an angled line on just the top 4 strings.
Otherwise - top tute, sure wish I'd had this when I was starting out back in 1976.
Nice job and thanks
Sir! Thank you for what you do!
YOU ~ ROCK ! !
Thanks for that - happy to have you here with us and hope you enjoy!
Shane
Thankyou teacher
Shane, the intro is actually C/D to D9.
No sir - it's just as written on that sheet. D9 is a dominant chord. There's no way it would be that. Cheers, Shane
Sounds more like a Dsus7 to me
Muchas gracias!!! Excelente lección gran maestro!!!
Thank you Gerry - happy to have you here with us and I hope you are having fun with it!
Shane
I love your tutorials! Can you teach “Starwood in Aspen” by John Denver, I haven’t been able to find any tutorials on CZcams and it’s one of my fav songs
Thank you Preston - much appreciated. Great song suggestion - I'll add it to the list for sure. Cheers!
Shane
Thanx mate!
Really like your tutorials. Your website could use some work though...respectfully. Still, I’m switching over from my previous go-to online tutor. You’ve earned it
Thanks from.Victoria BC , can you always try a 1 and a 2 and a example as well.as the down up just for timing on ghost strokes. Just an idea but if not you have a very nice way of teaching
The best lesson !!!!!!!!!!
Thank you JeanPat - much appreciated and glad to have you here with us!
Shane
Amazing video! Thank you!!
Thank you Ed - glad to have you with us!
Shane

Shane
Thanks Shane!
Thanks for Commenting Treyson - glad to have you with us!
Shane
Second chord is actually A on the high E string fifth fret, D on the the B string on the third fret and C on the G string fifth fret,,,and the open D.
Can I get a link to your lesson?
Eagles S if you search the song on CZcams they have live performances of the song showing them playing it as such.
Well then why arent you learning from that video?
Eagles S I already know the song. Listen, if you don’t effin’’ believe me, go investigate it yourself. Watch the actual band playing it.
Eagles S here, figure it out, czcams.com/video/O3fI0mLz3ks/video.html
GREAT JOB!
Thank you Mary Jane - I really appreciate that - I hope you are having fun with it!
Shane
Can you add a count to your strum pattern? I think this would help in learning the strumming pattern.
Thanks for that - some songs a count helps for sure. I don't think it'll help in this song as they are 1/16th note strums and you might have more luck just feeling it out while staring at the sheet. Cheers,
Shane
Sounds like a Samba beat pattern.
Funky indeed Brian - Cheers!
Shane
Thank you much
Thank you Rainier - hope you are having fun with it and glad to have you with us!
Shane
Great tutorial ! But for long time i wanted to learn that first fingerpick in the acoustic live version , and never found the tabs :(
Thank you Oscar - glad to have you with us!
Shane
Hello Shane Do You Play Live ? You’re Quite The Guitar Player / Teacher . Cheers ( Mississauga Ontario Canada)
Thanks Trevor - I used to play a whole lot - touring - all over the planet. It's nice to stay home for a bit!
Shane
I am having problems stretching my fingers apart enough to do the C/D what can I do to improve this? Thank you, I love the videos. Still working on my loosy goosy and that is getting better :-)
Hi ETC Flyer - just make sure your left hand thumb is nice and low and that it is leaning not toward the headstock but toward the body of the guitar. Cheers!
Shane
As your 4th finger gets stronger and you get better at sending messages to it from your brain - and having it obey!) -you may find the opening chords are a little easier to get to stretch-wise using a 134 fingering, rather than the 123 one demonstrated here. It's a good situation to learn to get that 4th finger involved too as it largely rides piggy-back on the strength of its neighbour finger 3 (ring finger).
Give it a go it's only tricky the first 20 or 30 times! After that you'll seriously wonder why you didn't always do it - trust me on this ;-) Happy strumming and chord forming to all.
👍👍👍thank you
Thank you Gianfranco - very glad you enjoyed it and happy to have you with us!
Shane
Well I’m an idiot. Thought it was Miranda Lambert Tinman. Don’t know why. Great job though.
Great song indeed. Cheers! Shane
Your close ups of the fretboard are way off. It switches to another camera angle which is hard to follow your left hand position
Hi Keith - try to get used to it my man - I promise it will help you!
Shane
Guitar At Work /maybe you misunderstood my comment. When you say look at how I’m holding this chord the camera switches to an angle that shows your strumming hand
Him: [enjoying playing]
Cameraman: Sir, we are live!
Him: oh! Hi guys...
Hi Jaspreet - Ha! No cameraman here.....just me running it. Cheers!
Shane
America... Beautifully musical... Bizarre lyrics... "The tropic of Sir Galahad"? Am I getting that wrong?
Hi Ralph - I know! I always wondered about those lyrics - Shane
Dewey Bunnell always had a way with quirky lyrics and folksy syntax in his early hits. Ventura Highway and HWNN. "Alligator lizards in the air", and "because there ain't no one for to give you no pain..." Say whaaat?
Close but nope.
Maybe the chords are good. But for the right hand it is not well played.
lasing!
Thank you Romeo!
