There is a video by the Infographics Show about 10 evil popes
"Pope fights" by OSP!!
@@ValerietheLovelyDeadlyItalian Yes, that’s great
Ooh ooh, I've got one! Benedict IX, the only pope who "sold" the papacy, who ruled as pope three separate times in a short fifteen-year period. He was known in Rome as a complete degenerate, with his papacy filled to the brim with murders, rapes and other atrocities.
@@ValerietheLovelyDeadlyItalian Legit was gonna say this too, pope fights and pope fights 2! (Just checked, Blue (of OSP) has mafe at least four Pope Fights vids; do all of them!)
I just love how Mr.Terry slowly but surely descended into more and more pain and desperation as the things the popes did got more absurd and bizarre
Humans are weird. So lots of weird things happened in history
@@mcmahon31619
Absolutely! History in general is just a bigger representation of human nature

"See the hat?! That means I'm pope; P O O P, pope!"
I love it when Sam sneaks those jokes in under the radar!
Historically, spelling was not consistent like it is now. Knowing his work, I can't help but wonder if he's pulling that from some official document somewhere.
@@Merennulli Maybe, but pope is the English word for the position anyway
@@Merennulli "Knowing his work, I can't help but wonder if he's pulling that from some official document somewhere." I'm sorry Sam is my favourite youtuber but he is NOT a big researcher, thats like what he's known for, Sam basically is a very funny wikipedia article.
@@bubbyberry He does do a degree of research, but that wasn't what I was getting at. A lot of his work amounts to "I found this funny thing, now I'm going to put it in a video somewhere". This fits with that.
It is important to note here that the Catholic Church introduced the strict celibacy requirement around 1000 AD, because of the really adulterous Popes. Before that they usually just chose already married men to become priests, which is what the Orthodox still do.
yes but that wasn't why the "reform" was but in. it was to prevent church land from being inherited by a priest's children.
But that celibacy requirement was after ignored even after introduction. Because remember the pope wasn't just above the law, it was the law.
If memory serves the church introduced the celibacy requirement to attempt to break the urge for bishops, popes, etc to create dynasties and engrain nepotism into the church structure.
Now they choose child predators instead of married people.
@@TheAngryXenite but nepotism still ran rampant, and plenty of priests still belonged to noble families which they would of course favor
"He's been on hiatus for too long" And thusly he returned... Terry, you are a magic man.
thought the sam o’nella reactions were gone, what a delight surprise
i agree, meatball
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
Fear not!
Fear not young man
Fear Not!!!
Im surprised that Pope Alexander VI wasn't on here due to him fathering many children amongst mistresses and he was very politically corrupt and still has stakes in his family. Infamously he tried to usually his papal power to aid the military of his son Cesare Borgia
Roderigo Borgia was during the Renaissance
Alexander VI is here though
He is the 3rd and last pope in the vid
Cesare Borgia? The same dude who posed as Jesus Christ portrait?😮
Mr. Terry: This stuff isn't appropriate for school.
Next day.
Mr. Terry: Alright my children, schools done for the day. Wanna join me in some really fun after school activities?
Kids: Hell yeah! What is it Mr. Terry?
Mr. Terry: *SCANDALOUS POPE STORIES*
AKA speedrunning a pink slip.
I had always thought the trial of the corpse was by someone who realized no precedent had been set, so he tried a corpse in order to get the practice banned.
But I guess we'll settle for the petty version
so same deal as the rat trials, or animal trials in general?
Catholic here: Already knew these stories *before* converting lol. These stories are the tip of a much larger iceberg 🤦♂️
and are you happy you joint a pedophile club?
Bruh, pope Formosas wasn't even safe in death 💀
One of the reasons why I'm not associated with Christianity anymore lol
@@garrettb2057 Sad to hear that
Overly Sarcastic Productions did a series on all the Papal shenanigans. Highly recommending it.
Pope Fights! 😁
Love me a Pope Fight
Pontifical Memery, yes
The first example he gives still sounds so insane to me.
Ah yes, the cadaver synod. The corpse of Formosis was pretty much moved about to and from his venerated interment site pretty much according to the inclinations of whichever pope happened to be in power at the time.
Also, the corpse had miraculous powers and apparently healed sick people that touched it. LOL.
Alexander VI was Rodrigo Borgia, which I guess was left out on purpose, considering - ya know - the other things he did
Holy shit you brought him back.
Pope Benedict IX was either 12 or 20 when he first became pope. The first of three time he was pope mind you in a 16 year period. He was also very hedonistic.
It’s interesting that the Catholic Church has undergone reform multiple times outside of just the Protestant Reformation. One notable example is when Pope Gregory VII reformed the church during the investiture controversy. From a Catholic point of view, the problem with Luther wasn’t that he called for reform (which was needed), it was that he went into schism with the Church.
If Luther remained loyal to the Church like Saints Francis and Ignatius, he'd be a saint by now. Maybe even a doctor of the Church like Catherine of Siena.
Luther was mad about the split too. He wanted internal reformation. As far as he was concerned, he was still Catholic.
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one
When you get a large amount of power it makes you think you can do whatever you want since you can just prevent people from stopping you
This is not a drill! Theres a new sam onella vid!! Its only kinda sorta history adjacent tho, itd about taxonomy
Came for your CGP Grey reacts, subscribed for your Sam O'Nella reacts.
I could have sworn I saw this on your channel, I've definitely watched it on Sam's channel before. Always down for some SOA
Can you do a collab of some kind with Vlogging Through History? I started watching you first, then him and enjoy both of your reaction, would be cool to see a history teacher collab
I agree!
Well this is also debatable but John was thrown out a window.
Out the window or thru the window?
If standing on a balcony and pointing and laughing while horses boink is wrong, I don't want to be right. I'm not even religious but I would vote for that pope.
I can't believe you finally came back to CZcams after like a 2-year hiatus it was crazy
OH MY GOD, SAM MADE A NEW VIDEO HE IS BACK
Hi, I'm a Roman Catholic, and as per your comment about Catholics not being offended when speaking on the bad spots of the churches history, while I wish it were true, it is not and it is in fact a huge problem because it is all anyone out of the faith mentions or knows about our church. I personally am not offended by this specific topic, Popes aren't worshipped, Popes aren't saints. (fun fact, there have only been around 6-7 popes who have been canonized as saints since the year 1000.) With that fact being said, I don't mind there being light shined on those who weren't the best, but it does make us look bad.
He probably meant that Catholics don't get nearly as worked up as Protestants do.
I have been waiting for more Sam omg
HES BACK
I love these videos!
React to Pope Fights from Overly Sarcastic Productions! Or any of their history videos. Blue's great.

Hey Mr. Terry have you ever seen the youtube channel bloodletters and badmen? Its a channel about mobsters

They’re really aren’t
My friend is Catholic and I ask him questions like “how many cracker do you have to eat before it’s a whole Jesus”
And the run of the mill priest jokes and he laughs and even adds to them sometimes
Something tells me you won't be showing this in a classroom... unless you really really really want to get fired lol
I think Oversimplified mentioned something like this in his Bucket War video.
Really enjoyed the video. Could you check out gettysburg by iced earth. It would be very interesting to get your thoughts on it
Thanks for the rec!
Pope Alexander VI, AKA Rodrigo Borgia AKA the Templar Grand Master for two Assassin's Creed games.
I just realized that there is a possibility that some of my ancestors could have originated from the banquet a chestnut (because I doubt they used protection), now the likelihood of that is not high because I am mostly Irish and Italian in origin, but the fact that it’s even a possibility kind of scares me.
Love some more Sam O Nella
Sam made another video for the first time in 3 years let’s go!
What a pleasant surprise it’s been too long
Do your students know you have a channel? Do they watch you cause that’d be epic
Some know. I don’t really talk about it though.
Watch Pope Fights from Overly Sarcastic Productions for more pope tomfoolery. They are much more family friendly.
2:45 even in death i am still served (court summons)
i think you summoned him with this video lmao
You should also react to 1848 revolutions by epic history tv.
As someone who went to Catholic School my whole life, my arsenal of Catholic jokes would shock, disgust, and terrify you. Kinda hard not to roll with the punches when there's 2,000 years worth of receipts that the world has held on to
Want more pope shenanigans? Check out OSP's Pope Fights. Its.... its great
SAM IS BACK
That Fermosos trail story is still a mindfuck.
Best part about it was that the corpse was miraculous and healed sick people who touched it.
You should check out a series called WTF 101. It's kinda like The Magic School Bus meets Rick and Morty.
For the first few seconds of seeing the thumbnail I was hoping there was a new Sam vid :(
Funny he's back yk
Sam O'nella COME BACCCKKKKK. The internet needs you
Update : 2 weeks later: Sam did come back
You should watch Unknown5, however their videos are long and are more serious but they're great videos
The Second Catholic Reformation under Pope Francis is pretty neat.
Now we've got a pope with the power of God and anime on his side. And he's been entertained by a circus troupe while a band plays Megalovania.
Oh and also he's addressing the cultural genocide perpetuated against Native Americans by Catholic schools.
The Antipopes were a whole weird thing.
I love your shirt, specifically because Sam brings up toilet paper orientation
Just make sure you're on the right side of history with your TP
Ayyyyyyy my prayers have been herd XD
Hwell, The Pope to this day is the monarch of Vatican City State.
You are absolutely right. Knowledge isn't school appropriate.
The Borgias used Macchievellian ideas to keep power!
More precisely, it was the actions of the Borgias and other popes and rulers of the period that inspired much of Machiavelli's political writing.
Yep. “The Prince” was basically about Cesare Borgia
I wish Sam uploaded more

Pasta e Fasul isn't even Italian, it's Neapolitan 😂
Almost spot on tho!
one person who came before martin luther was jan hus the j is a y. he was a bohemian man & started the hussite protestant church before it was cool. he still lives on to this day. his church not him the catholics burnt him at the stake. Sam should do a video on it one day.
Lol yeah. Huss: I was Protestant before it was kool.
No that’s indulgences😊
im catholic and well aware that the church is not headed by perfect people
Wasn't one of the Borgias a Pope?
Yep, this is a video where....how should we put this?
😬
He is holy and loves ravioli it's the pope
anyone remember the Aristocrats?
I sure am glad that there was a reformation and church leaders today don't live double lives or act two faced with their morals and preaching......waittttt
Perhaps they suffered from scandaliosis?
Those before Martin Luther - John Wycliffe and Jan Hus.
If you are asking if these Popes mentioned in the video came before Luther, Wickliffe and Huss; the first three were before L, W, and H; the last one, Alezander VI, came between W with H and L. Hope it helps.
@@thelearningmethod no I'm not asking about the popes. I'm telling about two important figures who were calling for reformation of church. I don't care about the popes. As you see in the original video - popes were rarely saint men.
