This is a question I get asked a ton so I figured I'd finally make a video about it! I'd love to know if any of you have any more tips for coming up with projects!
This is why I'm Team Karen 4lyfe. Not only do you use your design background and language to make practical and fun crafts, you think of aspects of crafting that SO many people don't. Even some of your collaborators on HGTV don't have the design sensibilities that you do.
This was a really helpful video! I love going to craft stores and looking at the pre-made decor (which is always ridiculously overpriced) and figuring out ways I can DIY them. Also I love using Pinterest to help me come up with topics/themes for what I want to DIY. Like I'll see some jewelry organization and think "ok what ways can I organize my jewelry that's not anything like this idea."
For me, coming up with the ideas is the FUN part! I have some practice on this because I used to work in a nursing facility and did an art group weekly, so I had to come up with ideas that were both easy and cheap to make. For me, I happen to be very materials-orinted and very visual. I will see a particular material in a craft store or dollar store and it immediately sparks ideas in my mind for what I could do with that material. I think a dialogue among artists and crafters about this would be very interesting.
This was a really informative video! For me, I think about what do I eventually want to *do* with what I make? This is another side of the problem-solving question. I started out thinking that I wanted to be a scrapbooker, but I really more enjoyed making cards to give to people. Then I got interested in making decor items, but I always wanted to give away what I made. So for me, my crafting aspirations run more towards making gifts for others rather than for myself. Then I think...where would someone put this? Those paper models of cute things like haunted houses or Christmas villages are amazing but how would they be stored? Or would they just get thrown out? So I don't want to put so much time and effort into disposable things.
Karen Kavett DIY thanks! But still, it works out for patches or pins. Usually, you need a bunch. I just buy one and make the rest. I just made a few patches recently
Hi, what editing software do you use? Good information. I have been blocked on what to come up with craft wise and it is not easy to do like you said. I try to use up what I have as well craft items before I go and buy more. But again good information and always good job on your videos. Have a good week ahead.
This was so helpful! I'm gonna have to link this on a diy discord server i'm on, they'll love it! (the invite code is 2cjr5GG if you go to discord, for my fellow creative people out there!)

Those are both great ideas!

I love that! It's so interesting how we all think of ideas differently!

That's a great approach! I love your thought process!
My strategy: buy something, try to recreate it. It’s a win-win situation- if it works out, great! If it doesn’t, you still have the thing!
Good plan - unless the original thing was super expensive!
