Am Indonesian. Indonesia should not join BRICS, there is no clear benefit and BRICS may soon be deadlocked due to their questionable existing and new members (China & India? Iran and nearly joining Saudi Arabia? Rly?), and joining BRICS may carry real risk of being seen as joining one side in this new Cold War, that's not good for the economy.
Joining OECD is much better instead, we will be able to learn good practices and apply tested policies for economic development. That's what we Indonesians want.

It's not anti-western movement, but rather to take control of our own economies especially among developing countries. When was the last time you heard developing countries changed to developed countries? So many developing countries facing middle-income trap, including Malaysia, despite doing good economically. What prevented them? This is the list I can think of:
    1) Dependency on US dollar - Depending on US dollar has pros and cons, but one of the cons is it will usually benefit US dollar in terms of value, and any other country's interest rate also may need to follow US interest rate, to balance that country's currency value VS dollar, making local companies suffers due to expensive loan cost. One of the example I can think of is what happened to Turkiye (due tried to balance VS both US dollar and Euro).
    2) Developing countries will always be target of sanctions - Iran, Russia, Libya, South Sudan, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Belarus, etc, either fully sanctioned or categorically sanctioned, even some of Malaysia's companies got banned by US (companies in other countries also may be listed as banned, but I am don't have the list), and China also always been threatend to trade ban, or high tariff, its only matter of time these countries will work together and not depending on the western countries. What does anything produced in western countries which can't be produced the same in these countries? EU always trying to limit the number of trade goods into EU market, for example palm oil products facing many regulations and propaganda, which we know the ultimate purpose is to balance trade EU and non-EU.
    3) Dependency on western-funded monetary bodies - IMF is known as money lenders to developing countries, but many don't realize how high the interest rate is, many developing countries had difficulties paying back the loan, for example after Asian financial crisis 1997. Asian countries or developing countries need their own monetary fund, where they can help each other economies to grow, rather than to make money.
I understand Singapore is over-exposed to western economies, and Indonesia in contra, I think is less vulnurable to western economy and politic, so no need to take unnecessary risk. Which is why the reason, they won't join Brics, but countries like Malaysia now need to make choice either to continue highly dependent to western economies, or rise together with other developing countries. Indonesia may not need to make this choice right now, but they may need to in future. Malaysia is not anti-western, but we need more diversification in terms of economics partner. We are too small to be self-independent, yet its not smart too much dependent to only one side.

It should promote peace and stability in all region in places in the world and address environmental concern. Using bricks currency or own currency will not stabilize any domestic economy in my view, there should alway have standard value depending on its own economic status. Promotion of ideology and campain of one nation should not be policy of the whole group however the country that have the resources might influence other policy.

Geopolitics however is not an emotional business, Malaysia is a rational state, what does Malaysia stand to gain from joining brics in these terms?

Singapore and Indonesia are politically and military close to the US-led global order than Malaysia and Thailand, the two states that will benefit largely by joining BRICS based purely on an alternative international trade and financial payment system. Furthermore, BRICS does not automatically exclude its members from using the existing US-led global trade and financial system. Last but by no means least, Singapore and Indonesia do not want to antagonize the US-led Collective West by joining BRICS at this early stage until such time when the BRICS has establish an in-depth international trade and financial infrastructure that would truly enhance global trade and commerce.

Out of 10 ASEAN members, about 6 ASEAN members, Vietnam, Thailand, Kampuchea, Myanmar, Laos and Malaysia are likely to join BRICS as a viable alternative while also link to the US-led global trade order. Singapore, in particular, is too expose to the US-led financial system to even comtemplate joining the BRICS without up-setting the Americans.

it actually because Indonesia and Singapore just have leadership change, defining trade policies would not be the first on the order of things to deal with. Indonesia and Singapore has presence in G20, so there is also no hurry to join BRICS+, we can join in the future. however Thailand and Malaysia does not have a seat on any global body, so BRICS+ member is the only way to get their POV heard on the global stage. ASEAN is no replacement for global forum, it not like we can talk about Israel in ASEAN.

The problem is simple, they will join only under the conditions that China RMB does not involve in BRICS currency due to its own depreciation nature from its freefall economy and finance bankruptcy locally disturbances.
The other problem is the Sino-USA trade war and sino-EU trade war on anti-dumping against Chinese overproduced goods should be returned back to China so all other countries can consider to join BRICS next. Otherwise any country should do like Indonesia to make a quick move against CHINA dumpings of overproduced goods from the trade war with USA & EU, Indonesia has imposed 200% tariff on all Chinese importing goods as they know clearly Indonesia doesn't need any overproduced goods from China that will only destroy their GDP domestic market, the anti-dumping tariff against China is the best strategy to protect and improve their own manufacturing industry on all levels.
