If Singapore do not want to be drawn into any geopolitics alignment, yet Singapore is the only ASEAN country that unilateral sanction Russian.
Your observation is right. Countries sometimes say one thing but do another.
Singapore sanction of Russia is an example of UN Charter of respecting a State sovereignty and territorial integrity " way of saying " Hey , don't anyhow for whatever historical and political reason/ baggage for a big bully to attempt to eat up a small tiny state.
@@maxp670 Were the Western sanctions approved by the UN? I think not!
@@adamiskandar5107 because Russia have veto powers. UN is flawed the 5 permanent members are sham, they don't serve for humanity. China, Russia, USA, France and UK all play 5D chess and less powerful states are a piece on their chessboard. Their ultimate goal is to enrich themselves.
@@maxp670 Sanctions are uses by big States to bully tiny states like Cuba, Venezuela. The war in Ukraine could have been avoided if only they had implemented the Minsk Agreements, which they signed but like what ex Chancellor of Germany Angela Makel said the Minsk Agreement was to give Ukraine time to build up its military, Russia seen thru this and are not going to wait for the West to arm Ukraine to the teeth.
No problem. It was an invitation but “not” required or forced. BRICS+ is here to stay, when Countries/Nations are ready to free from Western Hegemony .👍

@@jameschalkwig787Please broaden your scope on Indonesia. We have other china major car and battery manufacturers investing here, including Korea's Kia and LG. In 2025, Freeport will complete the world's largest single-line copper cathode plant in Gresik. Vale's nickel plant is also progressing quite well. In infrastructure, the extension of the Woosh train to Surabaya will commence as soon as Prabowo takes office. And China's 5G network in IKN is on the list as well...😊... I pray for Brics to keep going strong!! Indonesia can deal with any bricks nation and surely welcome to go along with brics policies as western policies ... just to let them know.... SUCKS 😂 their current policies are driven by leaders with severe emotional damage.
I think Malaysia was not 'invited'. Malaysia requested to join the BRICS on its own accord without consultation with ASEAN members. Same for Thailand. Let's hope there wouldn't be any conflict of interest in future affecting unity of the ASEAN.
B_tch western?
@@limjan1667that's not true. We see from the get go that the new PM did not suck the nation's riches into his own pockets, unlike most of the previous PM, costing MY billions of losses.
Strongly support Malaysia joining BRICS. No different than signing up CPTPP. Now there’s category called ‘BRICS partner’ instead of outright membership, making it more feasible
Don't have to be anti West to join Brics but pro to it's own country. India is not anti West!
Correct..India is in a class of its own as a major power. Others cannot use that argument convincingly.
Malaysia is also not anti US or West... Infact friends to every peace loving country in this world...

Definitely a good thing for Malaysia to join BRICS. We need trade and foreign investments and not geopolitics. BRICS is our best option. We are different from Singapore because we didn't sanction Russia for the Ukraine war and we didn't join the West to put any caps on Russian oil like what Singapore did. We only sanction when it is legally approved by the UN and not by any other countries. Singapore even if it wants to join BRICS will not be accepted because of their past political act against Russia

My answer to the question, why not?? Malaysia and Thailand are thinking of their currency being manipulated by the US Dollar although our enonomic fundimental is good. Anyway malaysia and Thailand can always trade with US and euro. US and Euro has been our trading partner for ages
Thailand being neutral for so long is an expert in diplomacy and manage to be free from colonial powers for centuries. Don't you think thailand and malaysia were wrong to join brics+
I am not sure if its wrong to join BRICS. Malaysia already has bilateral arrangement with China and India to trade in local currency. Why can't we more such bilateral arrangements with the other main trading partners in BRICS without joining the grouping?
You do not need brics to decouple from usd.
@@dr.ilangokaruppannan Joining BRICS means you can trade in your own currencies instead of trading in US dollars. Joining makes the alliance stronger. Just like Europe. They also have bilateral arrangement with one another to trade in local currency, but now they join EURO and have one common currency called the EURO. Singapore is aligned with USA interest. If the narrative is non aligned which is a fundamental of ASEAN countries, then Singapore should not allowed USA military interest be allowed on Singapore land.
Precisely why Sg is not keen to join Brics?

Am Indonesian. Indonesia should not join BRICS, there is no clear benefit and BRICS may soon be deadlocked due to their questionable existing and new members (China & India? Iran and nearly joining Saudi Arabia? Rly?), and joining BRICS may carry real risk of being seen as joining one side in this new Cold War, that's not good for the economy.
Joining OECD is much better instead, we will be able to learn good practices and apply tested policies for economic development. That's what we Indonesians want.
Why would Malaysia be interested in joining BRICS, given the reasons above?
As a malaysian my mself. I have no idea about this brics nor why malaysia want to join brics. But let see how is it going in 1 to 2 years
The reasons for Singapore for not joining BRICS is different from Indonesia. Singapore joined the US to sanction Russia for the war in Ukraine, how can it join the block.Indonesia with a population of +- 250M, they pocess they own strength in every sector, so they can just wait and see. As for Malaysia, joining BRICS is mostly for economic reasons, and also relatively small for bringing any impact to world issues.

@bowarrow9147....you are absolutely correct about the reason Singapore cannot join BRICS. I was really surprised and puzzled when Singapore followed the US, UK and EU to sanction Russia. Why????? Singapore could easily stay neutral and not make Russia an 'enemy'.
It's not anti-western movement, but rather to take control of our own economies especially among developing countries. When was the last time you heard developing countries changed to developed countries? So many developing countries facing middle-income trap, including Malaysia, despite doing good economically. What prevented them? This is the list I can think of:
1) Dependency on US dollar - Depending on US dollar has pros and cons, but one of the cons is it will usually benefit US dollar in terms of value, and any other country's interest rate also may need to follow US interest rate, to balance that country's currency value VS dollar, making local companies suffers due to expensive loan cost. One of the example I can think of is what happened to Turkiye (due tried to balance VS both US dollar and Euro).
2) Developing countries will always be target of sanctions - Iran, Russia, Libya, South Sudan, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Belarus, etc, either fully sanctioned or categorically sanctioned, even some of Malaysia's companies got banned by US (companies in other countries also may be listed as banned, but I am don't have the list), and China also always been threatend to trade ban, or high tariff, its only matter of time these countries will work together and not depending on the western countries. What does anything produced in western countries which can't be produced the same in these countries? EU always trying to limit the number of trade goods into EU market, for example palm oil products facing many regulations and propaganda, which we know the ultimate purpose is to balance trade EU and non-EU.
3) Dependency on western-funded monetary bodies - IMF is known as money lenders to developing countries, but many don't realize how high the interest rate is, many developing countries had difficulties paying back the loan, for example after Asian financial crisis 1997. Asian countries or developing countries need their own monetary fund, where they can help each other economies to grow, rather than to make money.
I understand Singapore is over-exposed to western economies, and Indonesia in contra, I think is less vulnurable to western economy and politic, so no need to take unnecessary risk. Which is why the reason, they won't join Brics, but countries like Malaysia now need to make choice either to continue highly dependent to western economies, or rise together with other developing countries. Indonesia may not need to make this choice right now, but they may need to in future. Malaysia is not anti-western, but we need more diversification in terms of economics partner. We are too small to be self-independent, yet its not smart too much dependent to only one side.
Bravo
For Indonesia, we just dont see that much econonic benefit with BRICS since their dominant economic player is only China and we've already been close economic partner bilaterally.
So narrow minded.. there's enormous business opportunities to be grabbed other than China in BRICS.. that's why Indonesia economically weak.. coz you all can't see all the hidden potential others have, only sees what's in front of your eyes.. in other terms, short sighted thinking..

Indonesia want to join the OECD just like Singapore
Indonesia does not prohibit its entrepreneurs from investing outside the country, this is very important if Indonesia wants to become an ASIAN POWER. Indonesia experiences money leaks every year, they send money to Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the Philippines, Cambodia, Thailand. They are not professional people to manage that much natural resources.
Indonesians gamble online every year, equivalent to India's military budget every year. And the servers are in ASEAN countries, such as Cambodia, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia. Because in Indonesia gambling is illegal, the dealer cannot be in Indonesia.

Why China is developing country when they are very rich right now.
You can see that there are problems brewing in the countries wanting to join BRICS, namely Thailand and Malaysia. Some western nation are stirring up trouble at the border of these two countries, that is the recent bombing at the border
For a layperson like me, I would like to know what Malaysia stands to gain from joining BRICS that Singapore & Indonesia feel they can do without.
BRICS do not accept new members , but your analysis of reason for Indonesia and Singapore are not joining BRICS. BRICS is now only admitting ‘partner’ to BRICS .
Malaysis should pay attention to these reasons why these two are NOT keen to join. Their reasoning should also be valid for Malaysia.
@@dr.ilangokaruppannan Malaysia needs to join because Ringgit is under pressure due to USD high interest rate. But if Malaysia increases interest rate to defend ringgit, it will affect the economy in terms of inflation and export.

BRICS+ is led by Russia China India. Its members include Iran Saudi Arabia UAE : Malaysia trades more with China than US. Malaysia wants to dedollarlize .and use local currency to trade with China Russia India .both ways. Thailand is like-minded with Malaysia.
Non aligned is the best policy, and not just diplomatically and economically but militarily. It is best not to be swept up in any regional or worldwide war. Always be neutral and spectator.
but basically only countries with large populations and strong militaries can implement this.

I see Indonesia and Singapore have never shown interest in joining BRICS, instead Putin has directly offered it but subtly also specifically for Indonesia they rejected it. And they are very serious about joining the OECD and according to the news Indonesia has been approved to join but has to queue with other countries that have joined earlier. It's reasonable in my opinion with the economic strength of both countries like Indonesia and Singapore have a special place in the OECD
Under BRICS requirement, Singapore is not qualify to under their condition as it does not have population count and only a small state that does not carry any weight.
Join or not join, not a problem and it is not because Singapore voted in UN against Russia. These are big games that BIG countries play and even Indonesia does not feel they wanted to be in such an event.
Now it is perfectly alright to join if you are ready. When the time comes to be counted and the big countries will begin to take its places every countries will toss its weight around to be the Head and leads and as the saying goes in a western cowboy & Indians movies everyone wanted to be the chief, who wants to be the Indians? The argument and unhappiness begins. What then, each one take turn to be chief and if there are 50 countries, you have to wait 50 years to be chief that is if 1 country on a 1 year basis.

OECD is under the US umbrella.
@@absolootely2571 Indonesia adheres to a non-aligned policy regarding foreign relations. Not an ally of America, China or Russia. However, the OECD has more advantages than BRICS.
1. The OECD offers more opportunities to strengthen economic ties with more stable international partners, which is in line with Indonesia's vision to develop the national economy in a stable and sustainable framework.
2. Within BRICS, there are a number of disagreements between members, such as the border conflict between China and India, which could hinder economic cooperation.
3. The OECD has higher policy standards, which can help Indonesia implement more effective policy reforms.
4. The OECD provides access to a larger and more stable market, which can help Indonesia increase economic growth and investment
The OECD does not fall under the "umbrella" of the United States or any other country in particular. Although the United States is one of the largest and most influential member countries in the OECD. Decisions in the OECD are made collectively by all member countries, and each member has one vote in the decision-making process.
No need to think much. Leave the strategic thinking to the ones who are capable of profound and in depth thinking. Just follow what Singapore do and you are good to go. I believe that Indonesia and Singapore and other ASEAN members would join BRICS eventually if they see Malaysia succeed in reaping many benefits from BRICS.
Singapore and indonesia are friends. SG has invested and helped indo in some ways.

Singapore is staunch US ally and former British colony. Being that it could not depart from having strong rapport including economic and military. Singapore is the only ASEAN member which had a squadron of multi-million F-35s which could not fly without access to the secret codes cleared from US Defense embedded in aircrafts avionics.
I would say these two countries make the right decision for not joining the BRICS. Simple reasons are that they might see that by joining the BRICS would be seen as aggressor or bully for a key member had gone to war in Ukraine as one of bad partner to be in BRICS alliances. By right, a warring state should be dropped out in order not to influence other countries or prevent smaller states to join BRICS in a friendly competition against existing established alliance for a better world order.
if i was the president of indo... i would join brics... for a stable rupiah
It wouldn't stabilize the currency. Plus BRICS will ruin Indonesia economy because only China will reap most benefits from BRICS. Even without joining BRICS, Indonesia's last e-commerce platform Tokopedia was recently bought by China's ByteDance & dumping of textile and ceramic products from China ruined Indonesia's textile and ceramic industry.
Thank God u weren't ... Indonesia will be doomed to have president like you who easily got eaten by hoax

Matter a fact ... decreasing value of Rupiah has nothing to do whether Indonesia joining BRICS or not ...
Headline inflation is similar in Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia, however, Anwar Ibrahim has identified the US dollar as exporting inflation to his country. Joining BRICS is an avenue to end this problem. Singapore may be immune to this phenomenon, however, Indonesia merely aims to maintain it's overall sovereignty.
BRICS is fractious with Indo Chinese friction its better ASEAN be neutral and engage the West, India and China but be wary of China's ambitions in the Indian Ocean and its claims of totality of the South China Sea.China's economy is tithering on deflation and has overcapacity so Indonesia has imposed tariffs of up to 200% on Chinese imports. So have Turkey and Brazil
Wise decision I would say - even India should opt out
I think Malaysia sees potential for de-dollarization through BRICS given how the PM has entertained the idea of an Asian Monetary Fund since the beginning of his term. How far do you think de-dollarization can progress under the grouping? I'm inclined towards it being a massive logistical nightmare for all parties involved.
I suspect that de-dollarization will continue but it may not completely do away with it. But the bigger question is can we not enjoy those benefits without being in BRICS? Something to think about
Dedollarisation is actually good for the Americans as all they need is roll up their sleeves and make a good honest living.
The same way one can ask Malaysia. Why join BRICS? Given Malaysia policy is a lot similar to Indonesia and Singapore. These 6 reasons can be applied reversely to Malaysia, no?

Singapore is a financial hub with very low manufacturing investment. The BRIC nations possess high GDP in manufacturing spectrum that make sense to enjoy the free trade rule. Singapore adds value to BRIC as clearing house for financial work.

If Malaysia chose to be indebted to China for life, she is free to do so but dont drag Singapore and Indonesia with KL. Malaysia is well-known to be anti-West, stop playing the morality card by tagging SEA to join Malaysia.
I encourage you to watch the video again. Indonesia and Singapore are not the central intent of the discussion.
Singapore uses lots of Bricks to build HDB's flats.
BRICS is making another mega move. Putin had proposed setting up an Agriculture Commodity Exchange to bypass the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, according to him it make no sense that price of commodity is not set by the producer and buyers instead by hedging and price manipulators in CME. With this BRICS members can also use commodities as currency this help those smaller or poorer countries having to buy US$ just to trade. For instant there is an infrastructure project between Iran and China which paid by oil.
It looks complicated though but definately something to watch out for
Its more of a disccusion of why Singapore and Indonesia has not, rather than did not, at present time.
Of course. This is not about projecting into the future.
BRICS are solid or hollow until use it then can tell is it worth joining, any agreement big or small on papers always looks " attractive " until hit the bricks that are solid hard to break it to continue by then its too late to return, just looked at those countries that joined in the first round they are not coping well with returns what invested or whether make economy sense or not any lose of money are always at the expense or ordinary folks that affected most, better be safe than sorry.
Enjoy your misguided interpretation
Great work Indonesia and Singapore all of Asia needs to dump BRICS!
SG will not be able to join BRICS if it wants to as its economy and military are heavily dependent on the US. The bulk of SG’s sovereign wealth is parked in the US economy and its military hardware and training are all US-centric. Btw, there’s a US naval base in Changi, in case you were unaware.
Actually a lot of BRICS nation's are very export oriented and have their own agricultural goods and commodities like Gas and Oil, while Singapore is largely dun have any locally produced goods.
Good point.
In short, Indonesia is Not sure if BRICS is about Geopolitics or Economic partnerships.
If it's pure about Economic Partnership, Indonesia will happy to join.
Thank you. I like this. Although your comment is short, it is thought provoking.
Indonesia is joining OECD, already accepted
afaik, not yet. Israel lobby groups are still blocking it
Accepted as accession member, not yet as full member
🎯 Key points from this video:
🌐 Indonesia and Singapore's non-alignment stance is critical to their foreign policy.
🛡️ Both countries avoid joining BRICS to not seem anti-Western.
🗺️ Geopolitical tensions among BRICS members, like India-China and Russia-Ukraine conflicts, drive their decision.
🏛️ ASEAN Centrality is pivotal, aligning with their international identity and goals.
🔄 Economic pragmatism guides their choice; ASEAN integration offers better prospects.
📊 Singapore's OECD membership and Indonesia's alignment with OECD are significant factors.
🎯 Leaders prefer focusing on current geopolitical engagements over reshaping global order.
⚖️ The decision reflects careful balancing of strategic interests, economic benefits, and diplomatic resource allocation.
its up to leader of the country..wether to join or not
At the moment of time, duel monetary systems aren't bad, more choices of customers end of the day.
Why BRICS and ASEAN should join forces? czcams.com/video/IYak9_EjMWY/video.htmlsi=WNce6jkSVbYVV3jA
Who knows what will transpire in the long run once BRICS have become more established with ever growing members!
Reason number 1 is, in my belief, the one that carries all of the other reasons for Indonesia. Every young diplomat joining MOFA or other agencies will have the Bebas Aktif doctrine planted in their head, for better or worse. The doctrine is an everyday reality for most Indonesian.
I agree that de-dollarisation may actually be a good thing for the Americans, at least in the short term.
For Indonesia, there is no urgency to join BRIC.
Reason Number 7 and the real reason. The Malaysian ruling party sees this as an opportunity to score political points with both the anti-West and pro-China elements of its population (which are both rather strong due to toxic racial and religious politics endemic in Malaysia) in order to win the next election. Singapore and Indonesia practice far more constructive politics and have no need to descend to these depths.
ASIEAN first: Indonesia prioritizes the basis of ASEAN economic stability, because of the importance of equality and stability.
How can you join another new platform, if the region itself is still not established?
Susceptibility to change character will create distrust and tend to be detrimental.
Indonesia has been on a strong independent political path and has been tested by global dynamics, and will be the same in the future.🙏
There maybe challenges in reshaping new order.. Every organization shall focus on the the development of all nation not division that causes not following international rules. It should promote peace and stability in all region in places in the world and address environmental concern. Using bricks currency or own currency will not stabilize any domestic economy in my view, there should alway have standard value depending on its own economic status. Promotion of ideology and campain of one nation should not be policy of the whole group however the country that have the resources might influence other policy.
Thank you for that thoughtful reply. I agree that we should not allow ideological divisions. Anyway this is still in progress. Lets's wait and see.
Very clear analysis. I think if they are well organized and comfortable with local strategy there is no reason to join BRICS at this time.
Spot on !
Frankly I not concerned what leader of Singapore or Indonesia for not joining the BRICS now or join later maybe. Their reasons based not related to Malaysian interest. As long of PM Anwar, decided for best Malaysian people welfare and livehood by joining BRICS surely I would support him.
Dr. Karuppannan, lots of love from an indian hindu here, as you can see from the comments here, everyone is fed up with colonial, western bullying going on since decades and centuries. Geopolitics however is not an emotional business, Malaysia is a rational state, what does Malaysia stand to gain from joining brics in these terms?
You are right. Its a world-wide phenomenon- people are fed up with the present order. But as you pointed out all countries have to make rational decisions to advance their interests.
Joining BRICS say that you know which side is winning. Not joining BRICS say that you are willing to cooperate with the "non-aligned, rules based" group and accept military bases in your country and trade tariffs and restrictions mandated by the group.
@@Nat_Ryder By not accepting forecully imposed military bases on the country soil do you mean to say that the BRICS is now providing protection to its members? Isn't it an economic organization?
Yes
PM anwar explain to general public why malaysia keen on joining BRICS. A public announcement on the benefits.
For me Brics is a way towards economic independence, free of usa bullying. Sg and indo can continue to be subservient, but you cant have it both ways
In the short term, probably. Definitely not in the long term.
Because there's no inherent benefit for Indonesia to join BRICS beside just for the sake of informality... We already have great partnership with India, Russia, and especially China economically, so there's just no further incentive for us
Every leader must do what is best for the well-being & future of their own country & people. BRICS is not going away anytime soon. Indonesia & Singapore are welcome to join BRICS in the future.
Okay!
because indonesia need to stand with both sides
Excellent. The video gave some solid reasons why Indonesia and Singapore decided against joining BRICS. There could be other reaosns as well but what advantage did Malaysia see?
Yes, exactly
Currently, the decision is that. It could change...
You are totally wrong about today’s Indonesia. It is not at all neutral. It is very aligned with US. It will take sometime for Indonesia to realize what they are missing.
Really? I would say Indonesia is somewhat alligned towards China, and mostly neutral. But of course neutrality is never tolerated in the American rule based order. You either bark at the command of America or be destroyed.
Playing with 2 side.
Economic term with China
Defense term with USA and allies
You're wrong 😁
We used to be alligned toward the west during the 1970s to 1990s during the Suharto rule. However, now we are not allign to anyone anymore
Singapore and Indonesia are politically and military close to the US-led global order than Malaysia and Thailand, the two states that will benefit largely by joining BRICS based purely on an alternative international trade and financial payment system. Furthermore, BRICS does not automatically exclude its members from using the existing US-led global trade and financial system. Last but by no means least, Singapore and Indonesia do not want to antagonize the US-led Collective West by joining BRICS at this early stage until such time when the BRICS has establish an in-depth international trade and financial infrastructure that would truly enhance global trade and commerce.
For your information, Thailand is a major non-NATO US ally.
Phillipines and Thailand are the two closest US alliance members in ASEAN. Yet Thailand wants to join...
@@dr.ilangokaruppannan PH has more than 9 US military bases in PH, while S'pore has one US air-base and the USA is a major arms supplier of Indonesia. Out of 10 ASEAN members, about 6 ASEAN members, Vietnam, Thailand, Kampuchea, Myanmar, Laos and Malaysia are likely to join BRICS as a viable alternative while also link to the US-led global trade order. Singapore, in particular, is too expose to the US-led financial system to even comtemplate joining the BRICS without up-setting the Americans.
Joinings BRICS is the better way to go. 😊😊😊
insyaAllah
Because Singapore and Indonesia are amongst wiser and intelligent people among other nation

The economic success
of a country defends on the industry of its
people & the efficiency
of its government. No
BRICS, no USA-dollars, no UN can make a country's economy
successful though no
"country is an island".
Sir, you have nailed it. What you said is the ultimate secret of success.
US firms will cut down irs investment im double-heads Malaysia
Not surprising. Malaysia choose the wrong choice
it actually because Indonesia and Singapore just have leadership change, defining trade policies would not be the first on the order of things to deal with. Indonesia and Singapore has presence in G20, so there is also no hurry to join BRICS+, we can join in the future. however Thailand and Malaysia does not have a seat on any global body, so BRICS+ member is the only way to get their POV heard on the global stage. ASEAN is no replacement for global forum, it not like we can talk about Israel in ASEAN.
You raised some good points but I don't think Malaysia and Thailand are looking at BRICS as a way of projecting the POV on teh global stage. It looks like they are focussed on the potential economic advantages.
WHICH NATIONS WANT TO JOIN BRICS AND WHY?
Over 40 countries, including Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Argentina, Algeria, Bolivia, Indonesia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Comoros, Gabon, and Kazakhstan have expressed interest in joining the forum, according to 2023 summit chair South Africa.
I think many countries are too focussed on the economic angles.
The problem is simple, they will join only under the conditions that China RMB does not involve in BRICS currency due to its own depreciation nature from its freefall economy and finance bankruptcy locally disturbances.
The other problem is the Sino-USA trade war and sino-EU trade war on anti-dumping against Chinese overproduced goods should be returned back to China so all other countries can consider to join BRICS next. Otherwise any country should do like Indonesia to make a quick move against CHINA dumpings of overproduced goods from the trade war with USA & EU, Indonesia has imposed 200% tariff on all Chinese importing goods as they know clearly Indonesia doesn't need any overproduced goods from China that will only destroy their GDP domestic market, the anti-dumping tariff against China is the best strategy to protect and improve their own manufacturing industry on all levels.
Smart answer sir !!
