  • The Metal Planer Milling Machine has been an extremely useful machine here at Topper Machine LLC. But its usefulness is limited due to setup time for some jobs. Now with the addition of the Machine DRO digital readout, this machine will be far more versatile and ready for almost any job.
    Machine DRO, or M-DRO is a division of Allendale Group LTD in the United Kingdom. They sell many brands of DRO, but I prefer their own brand, M-DRO.

    That was really interesting how you can modernize an old machine to make it much easier to use. Now you have the reliability of the old machine with the modern convenience of the digital readout. Well worth the money, time and effort to do the conversion.

    I had given up setting up my 1972 Harrison lathe with a DRO system until I saw this video, which prompted me to poke around their website. M DRO is unique. They have three different sized magnetic reading heads. Unlike this standard installation, the other two, with much smaller heads, come without any infrastructure or cover, but allow the magnetic tape and stainless cover to be adhesive installed in a self machined groove and enclosure design, resulting in a very small footprint. The much smaller footprint then allows installing the reading head on the back of the lathe ways instead of in front of the tailstock. Since my lathe has a full cross slide that hangs over the carriage, this makes for the perfect installation.... the price, including shipping to Arizona from England, can't be beat.

Getting bracketry square off of the design form and pattern draft of old machinery is always a real PITA, and then the aluminum shiny new stuff always sticks out like a sore thumb too. Make that plus one for M-DRO, I had a glass scale from them that became unreliable outside any warranty period and asked about buyng a new one, explaining why, and they said bring it over, they only an about hours drive from me,and they would inspect it. Turns out it was just dirty but the changed the redhead anyway. Anyway great service!
    I bought a kit last year to fit my lathe, but I can't be arsed to fit it as it involves moving the lathe away from the wall to get to the back. Maybe one day?
    PS, on the brackets topic, general purpose bits will never be as good as custom made ones but if they work that is what is important, and once fitted you tend to forget them anyway.

    It looks like this M-DRO brand of readout, you end up covering the mounting screws that attach the linear encoders with the magnetic encoder strip. Since it is an adhesive attachment, that means you have to pull the adhesive loose and take the strip out, if you ever want to dismount the linear encoders. This seems very BAD to me. It seems you effectively ruin the magnetic strip if you have to remove it to take out the mounting screws. For my machines, I will NOT be buying the M-DRO product. I really want to be able to take the linear encoder scales off, if I have to work on the machine, like take the table off or whatever. But your video showed the product well. Thank you for that. It was good and useful information. I will probably buy a SINO or SHARS DRO setup for my machines. Thanks. --Doozer

    • @TopperMachineLLC
      @TopperMachineLLC  Před rokem

      Yes, the magnetic scale probably would be ruined. But, I have never had a reason to take them off. They do sell more magnetic tape, and it is very reasonably prices. I have one of the SINO readouts, and although it performs well, it is very bulky compared to these.

    • @kooldoozer
      @kooldoozer Před rokem

      @@TopperMachineLLC Thanks Josh. Good to know you can buy more magnetic tape. One possible good application of these DROs is a surface or tool/cutter grinder. As you know, the tables just set on the saddles. It looks like the M-DRO read head does not contact the linear scale. This would be ideal for taking the table off surface or TC grinder, as not to have to worry about disconnecting the read head. But I have a concern... Would grinding dust be attracted to those magnetic encoder strips ? ? ? -----Doozer

If I might make a lil suggestion; on your Z axis, instead of a removeable crank like there is now....why not affix a hand wheel of some type and just leave it there.....use the moveable hand crank for just X and Y.....a dedicated hand wheel on Z wont take up anymore room, its out of the way actually and with a li palm spinner it will be easy easy and quick to use......just a thought......Weather here is finally breaking, snow is close to almost gone, strong winds are drying out the woods big time, total burn bann..NOT a good thing.....next is to prepare for BUG season.....LOL

    Nice clean installation! Permit me a moment of envy that your planer is a pretty petite little deal for its table travel and size. Was your DRO a customized deal or was is for a particular machine (like a lathe)? And another question pertaining to planers: if you change the elevation of your tool bar (where the mill head is mounted) have you ever observed that the tram will be off from one end of the bar to the other (due to there being 2 lead screws)? I was told that was an issue with my machine. Have a good day!
