For those having USB issues setting up ES, I went through 4 USB sticks before finding one that worked. SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 64GB works fine :-)
iam so fustrated im glad i saw this comment i went through like 3 sticks now i have to go buy another one thnk u for the info now i can finally get this up and running i didnt think it would be this hard!
Seems the ps classic is the same way
thank you for making this tutorial, none of this is very complicated but putting all the steps together would have left me very confused without this guide. (:
Much appreciate the clear and concise details here man. Project lunar documentation and instructions, especially on youtube, is generally very poor. Good job!
Thanks got mostly there last night, you filled in the blanks! Can't get SegaCD to run though. Got master system, genesis and 32x all going strong! Looking forward to 1.1.
Your videos are so helpful and easy to follow. Thank you so much for these.
The only things missing for me are:
- USB OTG on back port just like Playstation Mini
- Sega CD and 32X Support in the main UI
Once those are done then I'll be in heaven.
Coming very soon!
OTG works
Don't forget Master System since the Genesis also had an add-on for Master System games.
@@Mr.Atari2600 Yep and SG1000 too. Great idea!
So no sega cd support yet?
To get sega cd to work do this..
Rename the bios to these put them on your usb in RA system folder, put your converted CHD or bin/cue files in the roms/segacd folder, boot up RA go to settings tell it where the bios is, and your good to go..
Bios_CD_E.bin
Bios_CD_J.bin
Bios_CD_U.bin
I was asking why don't run the games but you answer my question 🤣🤣🤣 thanks dude
i cant seem to find the bios option in the settings of RA
@@peterhuynh3813 switch on, left RA / settings/directory/system/bios 👍
@@T200026 you're the real hero, have a medal🥇
@@peterhuynh3813 I do try 😄 hope it helps, as there isn't a lot of info about..
A video showing how to customize settings on the RetroArch installed by Project Lunar would be welcomed !
Especially, video shaders and filters, they seem pretty difficult to change.
I agree!
Great tutorial. Quick question, how do you save/load game when you are playing in emulation station?
Thank you for the guide! I am loving Battletoads Double Dragon on my mini :D
Hi, first of all thanks for these videos, that first about Project Lunar and this one about ES in the mini.
Very good tutorial
Still I have one question: when using ES in the MD mini, did you notice any controller lag?
Specially while pressing buttons for jump, shoot etc.
To exit back to the menu without seeing RA do this....
After you have configured your game pad go out of ES and go into the boot menu and select the left RA go into settings/input/hotkey binds and scroll down to Quit RA and select which button you want to use, then exit RA it will save on exit ive also set to press the hotkey twice to exit in case i accidently tap it.. all done.. hope this helps.
I also had to make MODE my "Start" button and START my "Select" button on ES. I dunno why that happens
@@josedanlopez not sure why that is, my mode button is my exit button, I set it to press it twice to exit as the wife kept touching it 😂😂 hopefully you got it working..
@@T200026 Yeah, I'm going to keep messing around with it. I'm sure it's something super simple that I'm missing. As a matter of fact, I'm trying to make this easy for my wife to use!
@@josedanlopez I'm using the sega 6 button plus mode/start button pad, there's no select button on mine..
great tutorial ...... thank you amigo
Awesome job man!
Thanks to Alan D. comment about BIOS files below, everything works well!
Still 2 small issues for me:
- The image of menus and games are slightly bigger than my TV screen, is there a way to resize the video output for it to fit my screen?
- I'd love to activate FM sound for Sega Mark III games, is it possible to do that?
Go into your tv settings and turn off over scan. That will fix the size issue
@@Restalgia Thanks, that works pretty well! Actually on my TV that over scan thing is called TV mode, I set it up in "Game mode" and it solved the problem indeed. :-)
A few other things:
- In the project_lunar
etroarch
etroarch-core-options.cfg file you can set the line genesis_plus_gx_ym2413 to "enabled" in order to have FM sound in compatible Mark III/Master System games.
- In this same project_lunar
etroarch
etroarch-core-options.cfg file, you can set picodrive_input1 = "6 button pad" in order to have your Retrobit 6 buttons controller to work correctly with 32X games.
- You can put your 32X CD games (for example Night Trap 32, Fahrenheit 32X, etc...) in the 32X rom folder instead of the SegaCD rom folder, this way you will be able to launch them and they will work correctly in 32X mode.
- I've got an issue with the "Toggle CPU speed (1.344Ghz)" option on: it makes the console randomly reboot or sometimes freeze completely. I don't know if other people are having this issue too...? If I toggle it off everything works great, except for 32X games which are slightly lagging (at least Virtua Racing Deluxe). No big deal but too bad it's not stable with it toggled on...
So you absolutely, positive MUST have a flash drive in order to run the RetroArch emulators, even if you're only using a few of them? I was kind of hoping to keep add-ons out of the picture if at all possible.
With Hakchi you can add a few games to internal storage with no flash drive. You probably can with Lunar as well.
@
Restalgia Can you do one just for installing Retroarch?
can you use the external USB and have 2 players?
Did u find out?
Great work, thank you - I have a question if I may. The PS1 Mini also used a hack that required a USB stick inserting into port 2, many USB devices wouldn't work, something to do with power. Do all USB sticks work or do you have any certain ones you recommend for this?
that was a voltage limit on the ps mini, thats not the case with the mini genesis. if your planning on trying a hard drive maybe a powered hub would be best..
@@T200026 thanks Alan. Yeah that's right. I actually did a quick soldering job on the ps mini to resolve that problem.
In regards to the MD, I'm probably just being greedy, I have done the Project Lunar mod and the 170mb seems like plenty - I have added most the games I wanted on it so I might just leave it be.
Thanks for the reply.
Great video God bless!
Another question:
If I understood, one of the Mini front USB ports will be used for the mounted USB storage
To use 2 controllers is it possible to use an USB hub in the remaining front USB port?
im wondering the same thing! i want to play final fight two players
If it's anything like the PS Classic, it should work, but will probably require a powered hub. If it doesn't work with an unpowered hub, try with powered before you determine it won't work. If it doesn't work, OTG would be the way to go.
i used a hub and it works fine
Too bad there's no audio in TMNT hyperstone heist
Happened to me too yesterday in Lunar. Wonder if it's a problem with the emulation in Lunar currently. Also had Toy Story and Vectorman 2 crash on start up.
There should be audio if running that game in EmulationStation
@@Restalgia Do you personally have TMNT and Sonic 3 running with audio?
@@Restalgia Do you think these problems will be fixed in future updates?
@@countwf295 I'll test it in ES when I get home but i can't think of any reason it wouldn't work with ES since the games are running on the genesis plus gx core, not the built in emulator
how do i setup mega cd and 32x bios and games
what cores do we need? all of them? does it have to be in *.SO or *.zip or is it the same? is there drivers to recognize xbox gamepad wired?
thanks you for everything!!!!
How do you get Sega Cd games run on Emulation station? Do you need the bios? Besides that it all runs well, the Genesis and 32x games.
Yes, the emulators require the BIOS files
Is there a way to add Meta Data or box art to Emulation Station yet or is that coming down the road?
Or can we use ones we have already saved?
I'll be trying the otg with wireless adapter and downloading images straight onto the usb stick..
Around 3:30 you mentioned it transfer the mod. Just need clarification. If I perform this ES installation, will it remove PL from the internal system itself (restoring it to default 42 games and nothing more)?
UPDATE 12/31/19: Installed ES, works great. Some things to point out.
1.) Like Alan D. mentioned in the reply to this initial comment, make sure you sync with the flash drive plugged in. I forgot to do this at first and Project Lunar was acting wonky with the flash drive plugged in (always asking for the language when exiting a game and the Boot Menu and Retroarch did not appear on the game selection screen). After doing the sync, all is good.
2.) Project Lunar (stock UI) works completely fine when the flash drive is NOT plugged in (when not wanting to use ES at all).
3.) The retro-bit 8-button genesis controllers work seamlessly in ES as well as Project Lunar (stock UI).
4.) The Insignia 4-port USB travel hub (purchased from Best Buy for $14.99) works perfectly for connecting 2 controllers for 2-player play (since the 2nd controller port is not available due to the flash drive for ES).
5.) Here's something interesting: Project Lunar without the flash drive has its own save data (internally) whereas Project Lunar WITH the flash drive plugged in has save data of its own on the flash drive. For example, when using the stock UI's save feature when NOT having the flash drive has its own saves kept internally. So if you use PL with the flash drive plugged in, you won't see your save data if a game was saved when the flash drive was NOT plugged in. And vice versa - if you save a game in PL with the flash drive plugged in and then boot up PL without the flash drive, you won't see the save data.
I really hope they'll be away to upload scraped info and boxart for the roms without using a wifi adapter on the console since I don't intend on buying one. Unless there is a way to do this that I'm not aware of. Thoughts???
It seems to have done that to mine. There no longer is a RA or PL game tab in the stock UI. I didn't try to put any Roms onto the stock UI via PL before doing the ES mod though.
@@trentondammann4377 after the ES instalation make sure you sync from your pc, that way it kept all the added games in lunar for me..
Great tutorial as always. Thank you!
One question remains:
If I do the initial mod from your other tutorial, is it possible to add the additional USB stick via OTG so that both controllers ports are usable?
I actually haven't tested it. Ut indent think the otg can pull the data from the stick yet. Otg is being used mostly for networking
@@Restalgia Fair enough. Thank you for your fast response. :)
Restalgia I have mine set up pulling data off OTG just fine, actually.
Why not a USB hub in port 2?
@@immortallix Theres a USB mod called TrueBlue which reccomends this, USB w/mod in slot 1, OTG in slot 2 for controllers
Ok so I have emulation station working but my GBA. GB, and SNES just seems to go back to the main menu of emulation station and I have the cores in place and when I go into Retroarch they work. Any idea how I can fix this?
same here
@@IDCarlosC Same if you figure out let me know. I really want to play some SNES games even tho im a Sega Fan Boy. I foolishly traded my SNES for an Atari Jaguar back in the day an missed out..
When adding games for the SEGA cd into the roms folder, do they need to be in the bin/cue format? And do all the necessary bios need to also be placed in there as well?
Nevermind, watching your videos for how to load SEGA cd games onto the PlayStation classic worked for this too. Placing the bios files under retroarch/system folder and then converting the bin and cue files to chd and placing into the correct rom folder worked. Thanks so much for all the tutorials. You’ve been a big help many times over.
I've had some awful luck with this project lunar. I did the install and had about 5mb of available space. My system crashed and I get an error 004 (I believe it was). So I went back to my pc, took off some ROMs, leaving 25MB on the Genesis mini. However now when I turn on the console I get nothing, a black screen. When I turn it off the red LED on the classic remains on. I need to disconnect the power. I'm at a complete loss here .
@@J5X7 I installed my back up and I'm running stock right now. I haven't revisited the project yet. What I'd like is to have the entire US library of Genesis games with the stock GUI running off USB. I dont know if its possible, but that's what I'd like. I like the stock menu and I'd like to preserve that look (but have all games).
I'm gonna try mine.
isn't there just an entire compressed file for all the cores.
cos looking at the list, it's a bit confusing as to which ones are which, or what ones i need to download
or do i just download every core that is listed under the megadrive Mini
Anyone that wants to disable kiosk mode in ES go into boot settings scroll down to the setting toggle kiosk mode via M2e or ES ..
Need Help!!! Emulation Station is not responding when I try to download it to my PC. All I get is a screen full of weird writing.
billythomas02 I'm having the same issue. Instead of prompting where to save the file, it opens the code up instead.
I haven't been able to find any comments on the situation, or another link to download the mod.
I spent the last 2 days looking for an answer, to no avail.
Hopefully it gets figured out soon.
Same issue here , I’ve had luck just running RetroArch without EmulationStation though
Great video thanks was wondering on how to get this working. Now can you also have boxart for this as well?
Working in the best solution for boxart, so as soon as I've got an easy to follow system, I'll post a video :)
@@Restalgia thankyou so much for all your contributions. Now im going test the compatibility of some of the games like turtle hyperstone
SNES ROMs won't play they show up but none will start
Hi Restalgia, does emulation have 720p quality
it works fine, thanks for the great tutorial! Every Sega game runs fine on emulation station, however i can't get other systems to work (i've got all the cores). Any idea's?
Change config on ES maybe a bad core calling, sorry for my bad english
I have it working easily with Nes and Snes, but like others have said with no one answering, with the stick plugged in it shows the stock menu always asking to select language everytime. When removing and rebooting it has all the games I added before doing it, wish I could leave it plugged in and have my current games list be present. Seems to be some lag on games too, just using a stock controller on Nes.
Where do I place the psx bios for emulation station? I can load games but get a message that no bios found so it uses the emulated bios instead
Awesome video thanks! Should I use the same folder for games for emu station and Retroarch?
How do you get the Genesis Mini to recognize an Xbox One or PS4 controller? You said during the video it just recognizes it but it won't recognize anything but the controllers that came with it for me.
i think it has to be wired
The nes core is not working at all for me. I'd tried with all nes cores on the link.
same here!!
Just a quick question....whats the most say powerful game the MD mini is good for??? I know the SNES mini and NES mini play some arcade games, just curious on the power, thanks m8.
Can we get just a brief tutorial where to place bios? I have seen this question multiple times in the thread with no answer.
If you’re using RetroArch , place them under RetroArch/System on your flash or SD. If you’re using some GameBoy Advance games , I’ve noticed the option when you bring up the RetroArch menu to enable bios
Thanks for a useful and friendly tutorial. No thanks for the super annoying looping music though.
Pretty cool now can I use any size USB drive?
When the FAQ doesn't go into detail why things like EmulationStation might not load and you cruise right passed the initial setup without a hiccup leaves people like me wondering why things like the OTG cable isn't working or why the setup formatted the USB but not actually load or read from it.
I appreciate all your help otherwise but for anyone else that might be having issues what issues have you had and what did you do to fix it? I have a USB that got formatted properly but when running ES does nothing, also doesn't load from OTG.
They need to add sega saturn pleaseee!
i have tested 64 emulation and is very slow...the same for GBA
The cores still need heavy optimizing which will take time
32x was glitchy until I turned on the higher clock option..
@@T200026 don' t work for n64 ;slow with higher clock

hi there.tks for the great tutorial and tks for all the team that make this possible.i am trying to add Sega Cd games....they all appear on the list..but when i Launch the game they return to Emulation game list.i have all the cores.can you or anyone please help me.tks
Steve.. Curious if you can help getting a video on how to get 3DO, CDI, Sega Saturn, and Atari 5200, and other systems going.. like maybe where bios or whatever must be installed where to get the emulation going? Thanks for great videos!!
Why emulate Genesis games under Emulation Station? Once you have the USB Formatted and recognized, wouldn't it make sense to just add them under Project Lunar menu? Then you have cover art and game info screen for each. Seems redundant.
Can you please do a separate video explaining Retro Arch? Thank you for the great videos!!
You can chose which emulator you want to boot each game with, even from the stock UI. Change the emulator option when you add a game
It seems I can’t get games to load. I’ve copied all the cores. I have tried to load ATARI 7800 games, but they won’t. Press A only to go back to the same screen...
i have a "Retro-Bit Official SEGA Mega Drive USB Controller 8-Button Arcade Pad for PC, Mac, Steam, RetroPie, Raspberry Pi - USB Port", and after i reconfigure as you on ES told the D-pad works the on menus but on games won't work, i just can´t move, on retro-arch menu i lose the D-pad too, any idea here?
@Restalgia Have you tried emulation with the roms of nds or psp?
They are playable
? if so, the cores are compatible for them too? Thanks in advance!
Is it not possible to get ES to display the button names for the Sega controller - even on a SEGA MINI? Seems pretty stupid that it says A on the screen and you need to press C, and IMO it does not fit well with the Sega theme. I get that it's the same in retropie, but that's not a SEGA product.
Trying to get Emulation Station working with Project Eris is proving difficult. Tried SNES Cores via Libreto and KMFD, but each time I attempt launch a game it just goes back to the ROM list. Do you plan on making a video on ES on Eris?
@Restalgia Can you help me out please. Tried uninstalling lunar but it just hangs and wont go any further. Hangs on the message "attempting to connect via SSH". Any help would be good. Cheers mate.
The best course of action is to join the discord (link in description) and post in the sega support section. The devs there will be able to get you all square.

Did you load up the BIOS files?
Yeah, NVM. I got it working now.
So since one of the usb ports are taken you cannot play 2 players with emulation station?
Hello. Can Emulation station run snes rom? I tryed but the rom won't launch.
stupid question, how did you get back to EmulationStation from the game?
How do I add games to run on RetroArch? I'm wanting to play the Rockman X3 bootleg, but Lunar won't run it. I'm too dumb to figure out how to get it running in RetroArch...
I thought I was missing a step but it turns out the USB drive I was using just wouldn't work. I could see it in Windows just fine and clean/format/partition it, but it just would not mount. Switched with another one and it worked right away.

Why not make A A B B and C C? Why change the mapping so A is mapped to the C Button on the controller ? Why make it al wrong and confusing when playing games?
Because emulation station and retroarch are based off an snes style layout. When you play genesis, it changes the mapping for that console, so if in the menu you map for a genesis controller, then when you actually launch a genesis game, it won't play correctly.
I have done this to my mini and it seems to work well. I am still trying to over clock it for some PSX and SNES stuff. I did uninstall and reset my machine back to factory because I wanted to test Hackchi. The installer for Hackchi failed said my machine had already been hacked and would not let me proceed. I thought this was interesting as the uninstall for Project Lunar doesn't truly appear completely reset to factory. This is unfortunate but I guess it is what it is.
Quick question, after performing the project lunar hack without going to emulation station or retro arch is it possibly to connect a PS4 controller in to the usb hub and play 3 or even 4 players?
Attempting to install Project Lunar on a Mac via Virtual Box running Win 10. The install gets stuck at "waiting for reboot..." I've tried different Mini USB cables (including the one supplied with my NES Classic) as well as trying different ports on my Mac.
