Just got all four FATE games after a nice steam sale for $11.97, and the memories it brought back were astounding. I remember playing this on the WildTangent thing on my way old pc back when I was way younger, and remembered all the fun I had running around with my pet cat. Fishing, battle and gear were all integral as well as what was at the time awesome 3d graphics. Cannot recommend this enough to anyone that played it back in the day, 9.5/10 at minimum!

Notes Part 2/2 from my earlier comment:
8:43 Elite and Legendary enemies have much higher stats all across the board, but they all have the normal skills they had as regular enemies. They don't get any new toys unless they are a Boss Enemy, but I believe that the Magic they use has stronger effects and higher damage/healing.
9:14 Your playstyle is Bows/Crossbows, Summons, and Offensive Magic. Since you aren't relying on Shield Battle for protection and don't always have the room to be firing at a distance, (like how enemies can shoot you from off screen) it does get hard for you deep down. You also don't seem to use Ringing Blast much, which would help with chip damage and giving you breathing room to use Town Portals to escape in close quarters.
On the higher difficulties, this tactics is more encouraged. If enemies are on the opposite side of a wall, use Lightning Strike or Scorch to take them out in 1-3 hits.
Or this tactic. Have a Town Portal set up in the middle of the mob, come in with 6 summoned enemies, and use Ringing Blast to keep some breathing room and for chip damage so you can warp back to town to heal and return with 6 more summons until the mob falls.
Hit and Run taken to it's greatest potential.
Additionally, try entering each new floor with 6 summoned creatures to have some chance to breathe like you could at 9:32 and go back upstairs if you just cleared the floor, where there will be no monsters to attack you as you regroup. Ringing Blast helps a lot here as well.

Admittedly, I haven't used this much, but I do see it working in the video here in the right conditions.
10:25 If you train your ears to all the various monster's noises as I have over the years, you can identify whatever is close by from what you hear. You can't see them or they haven't seen you, but you can identify them.
Just to name a few noises: Abominations have a deep, menacing laugh. Imps and Hags/Swamp Sorceress' have a high pitched, mocking laugh. The Ghosts all have a raspy, errie shriek. The Beetles all have a chittering, angry sounding shriek. Vampires and Nagas hiss like snakes. Bugbears, Orcs, Ogres, and Cave Giants all have a deep, almost confident chuckle. Wolves make howl calls and the Stalker Cats have low, menacing click like growls.
Pretty much every enemy has identifying sounds. Try opening both inventory screens and listening to just what sounds get made besides the music.
11:24 FATE was in development for (at minimum/most) 6 Months. And yet it was Runner Up for 2005's Game of The Year. Impressive for a game this relatively minimal compared to many others.
Travis Baldree had his fingers in almost every inch of the pie on this one. Check the credits, it's crazy how much involvement he had.

I always loved the soundtrack. Sure there are not many tracks, but they are all top quality, and there is a lot of nostalgia for me. I sometimes listen to them when I am coding, among many other video game OST's FATE was my first ever video game, so plenty of nostalgia whenever I revisit it, which I mainly do when I just want a really simple game to relax to, rather than one I need to put effort into.

first off. fishing in this game is TOTALLY OP. legit getting high level stuff takes about an hour and in the begining you can get a legendary suit. (even though you can't equip it yet.) also I played this game as a kid with my three older sisters. we all made our own builds and tried to finish the game before the others. I got to the end first. I played with a tower shield and a mace. my ten year old self knew only to hit them hard and hit them fast.
in the end the game was my first ARPG and I'm very stoked to play through undiscovered realms along with the others. they sort of fixed the repetitiveness of the first by adding more dungeons in the later games. it will still have it's flaws but I still love this game. it's a good classic with all the things that make and ARPG an ARPG.

Hmmm, one classic gem from WIldTanget games, i do remember the fun of the demo like all others, actually speaking of old games anyone Wild Tanget Vets here?
You see, i've been looking for fate for ages, when i finally found it looking on the old wildtanget games website, which surprisingly still adds games to its list, i was hoping to try and find some older games like fate, i do remember there was two in particular that i was o so ever like to find again:
this one with driving, all i can remember was playing in a single level in demo mode (a city like map) i don't remember much of the game since i was young then, a couple of tracks ps2 era graphics and a lot of racing, fun that's about all i can remember, of course all i'd like is the name so i can find it again (hopefully both of these on steam)
Also, the other one was i think a Sci - Fi/space FPS game? I do remember speaking to NPC's in a somewhat story like thing, it had an inventory system and what not kinda like an RPG, but because i was young and didn't understand what was going on all i did was shoot NPC's lmao. When i look at all the wildtanget games all their Sci - Fi games are either the shootem up top down galaxy sim or RTS's inspired by command and conquer etc.
Sorry for this long request, and an odd one at that P.S this was a very great review even know i'm about a year late. :/

Admirable Review. As a veteran of the Original FATE who has been playing it off and on ever since I got this for my Birthday in 8th Grade, FATE is without a doubt one of the most balanced and easy to pick up Dungeon Crawlers you'll ever play.
Looking at your review, I thought I'd also leave several worthwhile notes on some parts you would find helpful for repeat runs in your spare time.
    (Notes Part 1/2)
1:41 Page is the Easy Difficulty and Legend is the Hardest difficulty. Higher up in Difficulty you go, the farther down you must travel to defeat your "Final Boss" enemy. Additionally, that "Final Boss" also has a mob of a single randomly selected enemy. And all of those enemies are Non-Quest Bosses as well. (It could be ANY type of monster but a select few. FATE randomizes the "Final Boss" and it's horde enemies with each new game.)
2:59 Whatever you pass down, DON'T have any Movement Speed Bonus on it. After repeated pass downs to future descendants, Movement Speed is capable of getting so high you don't even run or walk around effectively. Rather, you basically teleport around the map erratically.
3:39 Dogs and Cats don't have any major stat differences when you start out. They don't have any Attack Speed differences or anything like that either. I could be wrong here, though. If I am, someone point it out.
3:55 Fish transformations also effect what type of Effects the basic attack of the pet does.
Lava Beetle only deals Fire Damage. Creeping Widows and Venomous Wyverns deal Poison with basic attacks. Brain Beasts drain Mana on each strike and let your pet cast Frailty, Blindness, and Muffle Magic. Abominations can cast Haste and Spectral Armor on itself, and (If I recall correctly) can cast Fireball, besides a basic physical attack and/or basic magic attack. It also seems to have Lightning Strike in battle later in the video.
Test all of them out to see what surprises they can all have.
4:12 Sending the pet to town for sell off is very workable in the lower levels and is more safely advised on lower difficulties. On higher ones, ALWAYS go to town yourself when both inventories get full. Even if your pet's damage and survivability is less than yours, you will want and need the extra help against the monsters. And the deeper you go, the longer it takes to get the pet back for yourself without just warping to town and meeting it there that way.
4:46 However you build yourself, remember the golden rule: "However you build yourself early on is largely your playstyle for that save file." You can have opportunities to try new styles/approaches here and there on that same file, but stick to your roots if the other options are not as reliably pulled off without big drawbacks.
5:35 The only thing Dreya CAN'T do is cure statuses outside Poison. You have no choice but to wait out the status' duration for you to be cured on Slow, Frailty, Muffle Magic, etc.
7:38 Magic Anvils are best used for mega expensive items since it's FREE enchantment. Also very nice for giving Yellow Hued equipment Sockets for higher sell prices or personal use.
(Beck's Wolfbind NEVER fails to have 4 Sockets when you find it. NOT a glitch.)
Shrine of Learning can also permanently drop Stats or Skill Points. Use with discretion on higher difficulties where Stats and Skills mean way more than on lower difficulties.
7:55 DO NOT be an idiot and get excessive with paying Fame and Gold to keep getting revived where you fall. You can really get into a serious rut of having to keep traveling forward and not getting levels to get better stats and use better equipment. You can also just choose to Quit and lose whatever progress since you last saved. I have done this before and it's HARD to get out of the hole on it.

This game came with my sister’s HP laptop. At the time, we didn’t really speak or read a lot of English, so she basically played out of instinct. Still, she managed to complete the demo, later on got the full version and completed so many levels that I’d see her character getting jumped by a bunch of monsters and at the end they’d be the ones defeated. She loved the game.
As I was a little girl I’d get scared with the huge spiders and other monsters and would cry when her doggie fled during a battle but I did enjoy fishing in the lake and feeding the dog a variety of weird fish. I still remember one time I fished a black and blue tuna and fed it to the dog and he became a black unicorn with blue fire mane. Miss those days!

Fate came with an old Toshiba Satellite I owned back in 2009 with Windows Vista on it. Fate was actually pretty good, but the first Torchlight game put it out to pasture. Today I'm a Linux user and play Torchlight II way more than I played Fate or the first Torchlight game.

This game brings back tragic and happy memories. Ive played the game for hours on my dads computer. My dad actually had a SUPER powerful legit character (he didn’t know about the easy question mark command hack) enemies would actually near insta-die when they attacked. Sadly I was a stupid kid and deleted his save. I don’t think I can ever forgive myself he instantly lost interest in the game he used to play for hours

Sent my doggo back to town with some excess dungeon-scraps to sell.. only to find he came back once with over 20k. gosh dangit.. I wish I knew what the heck was so valuable. to that point, I only had 8k in gold.

You know, one of the things that keeps me playing is the sheer level of strategy that you have to use for the extreme levels of the dungeons. Literally. It forces you to cheat wisely. And even though the enchantments are randomized , the game gives you enough time to to strategize the perfect items (although if you’re not careful, you can overenchant, and dispel all the magic). I don’t know if it’s legitimately possible to go to floor 1000000 without using cheats and even then, you can get crushed without the right spells and equipment. 😂
