    I knew from the minute that I found you on CZcams that you were a gem. The way you present yourself the way you interact on CZcams the way you speak to us, you are funny and quirky, but all in a good way. You always made me feel so happy to come back to your channel. Your parents must be so proud of you. I never doubted for a minute that you wouldn’t succeeded on your channel. If you don’t mind me comparing you to Laura Vitali on the cooking channel, I admire her just as I admire you. I see you as a journalist as a commentator as a scholar as a professor you name it you could be anything. You have that confidence. I am so happy for you and listen if this gets big you could quit your day job. So happy to be part of your CZcams channel. Congratulations and good luck.

So far I they are doing fairly well and am watering them with my hose everyday for about 20-30 seconds. I am learning as a I go along and will utilize your expertise and thank you for all your help.

    I have large heavy pots that I bring into my garage every year. My pots are smaller on the bottom and most have an edge at the top. I take a rope and a hand truck (dollie) to move them even though the base of the pot is larger. I walk up to the pot and tie the rope to the left side of the dollie and go around the pot and tie the loose end to the other side of the dollie pulling tight. The pot is now connected and can be moved into the garage! If the pot is very wide you can place a piece of plywood on the bottom of the dollie and rock the pot on to the dollie. The weight of the potted plant holds the plywood in place long enough to get it in the garage. Some of my pots are 20 inches tall x 20 inches wide while the base/bottom of the hand cart is only 9 inches wide. It works great without any help!

    Most hydreangeas are down to zone 4 so container planting are perfect if your zone 6 and up. The rule of thumb is to make sure your 2 zones up whenever considering to leave them out in pots during the winter. I'm in zone 7b so this isn't a problem for me. I have the limelight & mophead hydrengeas in containers throughout the seasons.

The flowers seem to be turning brown. I am experimenting with changing their location si they don't get too much or too little sun. Leaves seem to be bright green so I know they are not dead. Thank you for sharing this knowledge on container hydrangeas! I was planning on putting most of my macrophylla hydrangeas in containers here in KS zone 6. This is my first time growing hydrangeas. Our winters are very similar, Chicago probably has a tad bit worse winters than us only because we sometimes have mild winters. Just never know which year that will be. This helped me to decide not planting some of the bigger ones in the ground. I was afraid no blooms would come since we have up and down crazy weather especially in the spring. Keep doing these videos your great in front of the camera clear, precise speaking, great at explaining things and very beautiful. Think your channel is going to do well. ❤️😊❤️

      @@kushclarkkent6669 not super versed on hydrangeas, but they’re beautiful plants when in bloom. Most of my knowledge comes from the industry mentioned in your username lol. Mycorrhizae is good for most plants as it creates more bio activity in common potting soil. Use good quality fertilizers and keep an eye on soil PH. Learn how to read plants and their foliage and you’ll always know the right direction to go. Also if indoors, use fans, makes stronger plants.

    I stratify my soil. At the bottom ordinary compost that can keep some moisture before it goes out the draining holes.
    Next level is perlite-compost mixture for a more airy mixture. Top most layer is depending on what I need. Keep water in equals bark, or normal drainage needs compost or the same mixture as layer two.
    It is a misconception you cannot use ordinary dirt. It depends on how you mimic your local circumstances in the pot.

    Is your garage fairly warm to be able to overwinter the plants and hence survive? Do you know how warm it stays in there as opposed to outside? I'm asking this because our garage on a single family home gets very cold, the ceiling is not insulated. My daughters live two miles from me in a townhouse and their garage is insulated by their own floor above the garage and both sides, also. Even when it gets below zero outside it can stay above freezing in their garage and it also faces south and gets warmer from the sun as opposed to mine where it is only a few degrees above the outdoor temperature with only one of the sides of my garage against a wall that is attached to the heated house. Just wanted to point that out to some to check to see how cold their garages get before assuming they can overwinter in their particular garage. Beautiful hydrangeas!

However, the fall is now here, I live in the hardiness zone 5 and in an apartment building with no unheated garage or basement. Hi Bethany - I have a covered screened in porch that gets the perfect amount of sun in the morning for hydrangeas, however, I wasn't sure if I grow them in containers on a covered porch, if they would need bee pollination in order to bloom. Any advice? Thanks so much 🙂

      If what you plant it in will use all the space, yes lots of soil!! I also like to mix in compost as well from local garden centers. If you don’t need all the space, I have seen people fill the bottom of large containers with bark or mulch then put soil on top.

    Hello! I love your videos! But I need your help! I potted my hydrangea & I overwatered it. I also thought I had to water hydrangeas over head since they want so much water but apparently I wasn’t supposed to do that. My pot soil started growing white mushrooms. On the web it said if hydrangeas do this that there’s no treatment & mushroom root rot will kill the hydrangea. So I started pulling it out. When I noticed, the white mushrooms were growing from the outside potting soil I added to fill the pot & not growing from the hydrangea soil. Do I keep the hydrangea and change the pot soil or ?

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  Před 2 lety +1

      The only way I’ve managed to save a plant from root rot was to replant it into dry soil! So I took the whole plant out, knocked off as much soil as possible, and replanted I’m fresh dry soil.

      If you have an unheated garage or shed, id recommend putting it there for the winter. If not, move it up against the wall of a building for more winter protection.

    Could you please help a very new gardener?:) I currently have a hydrangea in a pot and it has many flowers ( like in your video) but the flowers are curling inwards and fading in colour. I had the pot inside the house by a window in April (because it was still too cold outside- live in Toronto Canada) . I am afraid to move it to full morning sun in my back yard - afraid it will dry out . Any thoughts on why the flowers are fading ? And also can I cut the flowers and would that propagate more flower growth? Any tips on how to keep them looking fresh and how to prune the flowers to keep new ones coming would be greatly appreciated:) Thank you:)

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes! I remove the faded blooms on my hydrangeas throughout the season. I try to keep mine in the shadiest part of the deck bc the full sun up here can cause the flowers and leaves to turn brown.

    Bought from store, repotted in large container with good potting soil. Was blooming perfectly for a month.

    • @ChicagoGardener
      @ChicagoGardener  Před 13 dny +1

      I use anything “bloom boosting” for fertilizer but the bloom color is dependent upon soil acidity, so you might want to try adding soil acidified to the pot.
