- Part 10: Austin Allegro Type R Sleeper K20 Turbo build. It has been longer than we'd wanted since the last installment of Jonny Smith's street sleeper Honda Civic Type R powered Allegro, but in this episode progress on the car's rigidity and safety are the primary focus. Strut braces and plenty of 'stealth' tubing have been added to the Allegro by resident welder and metallic guru Adam Benton of FabCo in Lincoln (fabco.uk/)
Thanks for stopping by The Late Brake Show.

Of all these CZcamsrs doing car projects, this has to be the one I’m most excited about seeing finished. The allegro sleeper.
Old cars, new cars, projects, restorations, restomods, barn finds, car caves and Idol Chats. Jonny is single handedly running 8 different things on the one channel. Almost every other CZcamsr finds their niche and sticks to it. I appreciate the work you put in Jonny and I can’t wait to see this thing on the road!
Thank you so much for this comment. We have certainly made a rod for our own backs, but eclectic automotive variety is the lifeblood of this channel.
@thelatebrakeshow It’s what you’re know for mate. You’ve always been that guy. And that why we all love you!!
That's how you build a proper custom car. The attention to detail is amazing 👏
I don't think I've ever had this level of anticipation to see a project car running and on the road than this Alegro!
Blinky, anyone?
@@goaty1964been a patreon supporter of the BOM boys for almost 10 years now, so yessss! 😊😊😊
@@goaty1964 Unlike Binky this might actually get finished.
@@goaty1964Hahaha I'm glad someone said it.
@@Zero_Ninety Spoiler alert! My great grandchildren are looking forward to watching the next episode - with their teenagers!
Adam's approach is brilliant. The customer is always right. Even when he's a complete lunatic. 😁
At 10.01 mins the two L section brackets welded to the longitudinal square section tube, which are used to locate the rear upper and lower control arms need a vertical 45 deg gusset welding to the inboard side, on both sides of the car.
On high load cornering the load acting on the rear lower control arm will twist the L brackets off the box section, as they are relying purely on the strength of the weld. There is no physical support for the load to pass through.
In fact all the 90 deg joints of the rear box section assembly would be strengthened with horizontal gusset plates at each intersection.
Minimal weight, maximum effect.
I'm a retired aerospace engineer, so view things quite critically.
I did notice those inner mounts for the control arms looking a bit flimsy. But given all those box sections appear to be just tack welded in place for now, they are probably just lining everything up at this stage and welding everything up properly later. So hopefully some strengthening will go in then.
It's probably stuff that's in hand I'd imagine but good shout!
The really hard part has to be fitting a straight and true new subframe to the original body shell that’s all shapes. BL were notorious for such things.
Everyone needs an Adam in their life
Become your own Adam
This video is just one of the perfect examples of why it’s worth financially contributing to the channel. The blend of old/new/quircky/low’n’high tech’ content is world class!👏……..oh yeah, Adam’s contribution to the show, like Shakey’s is huge value add and very inspirational! Fact!👍👏🙏⭐️💥
Many thanks. Really glad you enjoy the variety.
We are all supporting the Chanel by watching, commenting , liking, and subscribing
Always worth the wait, every episode a treat. Thanks for giving Adam such intricate challenges to thrill us with. Not long now (year or so?) before the All Agro takes to the road.
One of my fav projects to follow; Adam's attention to detail is gobsmacking! Not long b4 the build is complete #sleeperallegro
Exactly, ads too 😂@@besenzon1
Love the stealth tubing. You could probably make it a convertible now.
The further he goes, the more exciting this gets. The "sleeper" tube frame tucked into every corner is brilliant. Sizing everything so the original gubbins will still fit is so cool. This is 1000x more interesting to me than outlandish crazy hotrodding. I sometimes work on houses, and this is exactly how I like to work... keeping the original features and original feel and fit modern ameneties in and generally just make everything higher quality while still feeling like it could be original.
Getting Project Binky vibes on the sheer amount of fabrication in this project and like Project Binky this is looking mighty impressive.
Now that is a special build.
Still love the intro for the episodes for this project! Great to see the progress moving along.
Adam is great. Nothing is impossible, he just needs to figure it out... And he does. Everything done properly, no shortcuts, no hiding the dirty bits.
This will be a long project, but so worth it. Nothing else like it.
This guys work is f- ing brilliant the fact he's from my home town gives him more than 10 points
Having been a welder for the best part of thirty years now I can definitely say that is some great workmanship. Absolutely cannot wait to see the finished car. ❤
Tubeway Army! Adam's doing a fantastic job. Almost makes me nostalgic for my old Allegro. 😁👍
_But are friends electric?_
Loving the allegro updates, think it will be an epic sleeper
Definitely my favourite series on this channel! Such an amazing project.
Even if there was just raw, unedited, real time footage of Adam doing all the work on this car, I'd happily sit and watch it all. Love the balance between performance and still looking very under the radar.
FabCo has their own channel too,.. .

IDEA 💡 JOHNY.... What if you got a driver's bucket seat for track days re trimmed in that lovly brown and orange checker insert?? That would be a hulking laugh brother 😂😂❤❤
Good shout, I completely understand the aesthetic rationale but the wheel and seat will be useless for fast driving.
What a brill idea!
@@tomhoward4905 One could get used to it.
@@UberLummox you’d be thrown around all over the place and the wheel is way too big
@@tomhoward4905 Yeah, you're right.
i had (and sold it, me idiot) an opel 73 a ascona , sleeper looking, with an omega 2,5 six zylinder. just a little more rubber , classic bbs, and a lsd in the rear what a fun machine. a guy throwed so much money after me that i couldn t say no . regrets regrets regrets. greetings from germany. looking forward to watch the next episode
I searched for ages for an Ascona a , too expensive.. I think that all the rally boys and girls buy them up quickly…. 😢
@@preonmodel9906fun fact back then i searched for an kadett c coupe (what a beautiful car) and the ascona was a cheaper "gap filler". but later on i really became quiet a fan . now with kids and a house i know i never will be able to put that much effort in an automobil;((( but hey never say never
@@breakshot7451 same for me, but now looking for an Austin mini all the same.
There are some cheap ones out there, if you are prepared to do a little bit of work and find the time of course 😬
I'll hold my hands up, I kind of overlooked this on the channel before (sorry), but after finally giving an episode a chance I'll be watching the full lot. What a machiiiiine.
It’s the detail that goes into it.
Still sooo much more detail to go before it fulfills the dream!
That seat fabric is ace....reminds me of the London buses in the 80's......
Allegroom is Very important!
The Stance is awesome. Respect 😊
Good heavens that man has the patience of a saint 😅🏴👍🏻
When a friend's dad had a light crash in his Allegro in the late 70s, I remember him telling me he got his fingers trapped between the steering wheel and dashboard, presumably because the steering wheel is so flimsy it just folded. A great video and excellent work by Adam.
Can't wait for this to be finished. The detail is fantastic. I've a thought for the original choke knob / cable....remote boot release, hook it up to a little switch that operates a solenoid, easy peasy.
No job is too complicated for Adam. I continue to be impressed at every stage.
There's loads of Allegroom!!!
Loving this car, hopefully see this at the shows .
Be careful though with the Meriva steering column, they did have issues with failing so I guess there is a part number they were modified from..
I experienced one failing on a roundabout and it's the unexpected loss of PAS that throws you! 😮
Thanks for the intel. We will look into it.
Loving the evolution of this motor. So far seems like a perfect blend of the original and the new. GET IT FINISHED!!!!!
Love it jonny! My dad had a couple of allegros and weirdly I now love them, or at least the memories. RIP DAD. Got to have original silver wheels and hub caps
Wheels will be silver
@@TheLateBrakeShow I think they call it rose tinted spectacles....when you look back, you block out the trauma.....and only remember the good times....!!
... so, you now THINK you like Allegros...!!
Lol😂
idea, use choke cable position as pull switch for a valved exhaust. meaning it can be truly sleeper and quiet but turn into a monstrous sounding thing whilst also looking original.
Adam is a genius and I am not sure what I like more. The attention to detail or the fabrication work (which by the way looks amazing) keep up the great work and I can't wait for the next one
I have say how much I enjoying see this project progress . It takes me back to being a teenager and reading Street Machine magazine. It’s reminiscent of some of the cars they featured a real street sleeper ! As they use to be called 40yrs ago . Sorry showing my age ! Keep up the good work I will look forward to seeing it finished.
Street Machine ruled. Thank you so much for the comment.
Absolutely love what you guys are doing to this car. Really looking forward to seeing the finished thing somewhere but obvs appreciate the time and thought that goes into its design. Great work!
Hi Jonny . Great work . No doubt this will be the most expensive Allegro ever ......and probably the fastest !!!! Thanks Jonny
A good deal cheaper than the Retropower cars I should think.
As a Junior engineer,I'm really enjoying what's being done here, he's doing a fantastic job😊
It always makes me smile when I see the old District Line moquette on the seats.
"It's going to be flocked in brown..." Best car channel ever.
The updates on this project are one of my favourite things on your channel. I've just watched this twice and it's barely been on an hour.
Looking forward to seeing this project finished
That is a work of art
Loving this project, glad you’ve persevered and I’m looking forward to hearing turbo noises!
I love what you are doing here. An Allegro. just Wow.
Just bloody perfect. Jonny drops a new video at the same time as Harry's Shed. I get ten minutes of ADHD decision paralysis.
Allaggro looking good! I wonder if there's a record for fastest Allegro??
Slick tube insert in the old rocker panel trick maing!
Love the original mustard paint with black steelies! VERY cool build.
It's great so see the skill, care and attention being lavished on this. It's going to be quite unique and a total weapon. If I need anything fabbed for my car I know where I'm coming to!
What amazing work with the bars running through the sills, pure artistry in engineering
So glad you have,nt cannibalised an Integra R unlike a certain other concern who are building a special Allegro(no names,no pack drill!)Will watch progress with interest.
Love the custom fabrication in this project
When this build is finished i will actually get off my arse and go and see it!! Fantastic build with such a brilliant brief. Adam seems a proper can-do bloke. His channel is pretty good btw
I love this approach to how to produce an interesting and watchable car channel, as far away from Top Gear as possible. This and Matt Armstrong are by far the best (and most genuine) car shows on CZcams.
Some lovely gussets on a Sunday evening , nice!
Great video and update on the build, but I was also impressed with Johnny Smith rocking his light blue Air Jordan 1's
Nice update, Thanks Jonny😄
Great to see the Sleeper update. Listening to Adam is brilliant.
Look forward to seeing this project finished .A friend had one of these back in the day when you could get a car for fifty quid ....and we would put two quid of petrol in so we could go for a drive 😁good memories
Love hearing the updates on your car. It’s really coming along nicely
Can't wait to hear how the exhaust and silencer is going to snake and sound through those amazing rear torsion beams ... Great stuff Adam
I can’t wait to see this car finished because I have lots of really very bad memories of an all aggro in this exact same colour that my best mate used to own back in the 80s. The car was a nightmare and it will be great to see the shell of one with some decent internals and a bit of go (and the possibility of actually starting on the button for once).
I like the idea of making the car look as standard as possible….subtle. A true ‘sleeper’.
Adam has made a strong front subframe. Great job. But the real talent is tying it all into the 1979s body shell made of metal that was dodgy even then. That’s true genius right there.
That structural bar inset along the sill, genius!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
I like it, can't wait to see it finished. Love the paint.
No depressing... Adam's gonna do more of the discreet looking racing sleepers, I've got a gut feel this is not the last one..
So happy to see this episode land!
The sill tube mod is really clever.
The last Allegro I worked on was an orange 1.5 hle.
The silly owner took it a boy racer drive in the countryside and smashed into a brand new UR Quattro that coincidentally my mates boss had just waited 7 months for from Germany as it was fully loaded with all the Tutonic finery.
I went to see the breakage and everywhere on the Allegro was crushed and destroyed apart from where the driver sat . Unbelievable. The quattro didn't look too bad as it had taken a glancing blow from the tumbling Allegro on one side but as you can imagine with about 100 miles on the clock the Audi owner was considering a hit man contract. I asked why he went to Hull to drive his new car back to Edinburgh rather than the usual transporter to the main dealer. He said , "I thought it would be less risky for any damage " 😂😂😂
I had an Allegro in the 80's and then a Vanden Plas-loved them both. Great video Jonny!
Absolute superb work so far, the build has come along way ,a lot of time thought and skill has gone into it .
Fascinating to witness the progress on this project!
Now this is gonna be a super sleeper for sure.
What amazing skills Adam has, a true craftsman!!!
Loving the Allegro, maybe a head to head with Retropowers Integra version!!! 😁
Retro power Agro collab is on the cards.
@@TheLateBrakeShow Brilliant! 😁
17:20 - Jonny wearing the box the trainers came in 😮
Can’t wait to see it run, an awesome build, huge amount of sound engineering going into this, classic, I personally like the shape of these cars this brings it to a place long deserved 👍👍👍👍👍
This is an awesome project, I'm loving following it.
Thoroughly enjoyed that! Adam is great and I can't wait to see the car move under it's own power. Loved how excited you are about it Jonny!
Love the ethos behind this! The main reason I'm using a carb on my V8 conversion is because I wanted to retain the original, functional choke cable. Plus the original shift pattern on the gear knob meant I had to use an R380 gearbox instead of the LT77 I already had.
Superb work, as always. Best wishes.
This is just going to be an amazing car when it’s done. The work you are doing is incredible. 👍🇬🇧
The planning
The attention to detail
Everything is just on point, I should revisit the previous episodes to check out the braking system and the engine build I guess
3D print a steering switch cover with a flat at the bottom which fits under the dash frame.
Adam is such a brilliant man!
Most excellent work!
Can't wait to see it finished!!
Greetings from the Netherlands
The whole project looks fantastic, I would make sure you fit in it comfortably with a helmet on though
Great video yet again.
Jonny I know a very good company in Essex that can do spline repairs, they did a motorbike shaft for me where the splines had stripped,
It was machined off and welded up by the chaps cousin who has a specialist welding company on the industrial park next door.
It was turned back to its original size, broached and heat treated. It came out perfect and has been 100% for several years, it wasn't cheap and not extortionate but you get what you pay for right, peace of mind !
Love it! That's gonna be one helluva car when finished!
Well done Adam proper job looking amazing g this is gonna be nuts when it’s done well done guys love it can’t wait to see this finished 👊🏻👊🏻
Beautiful work
Another tall guy in a little car! Can’t wait ‘til this is finished and Johnny in this Allegro can challenge Gordon Murray in his Retropower Escort to proper shoot-out!
This is cool. Can't wait to see it done.
This project is going to be such a cool car when it’s done. Great episode!
21:26 'it's been twatted on the back by the previous owner'... 🤣🤣👍 epic! I absolutely can't get enough of casual English swearing! Love the videos, much love from Australia 🙏🤗😋
So excited by this project and its progress. Cannot wait to see it on the rrrrroad
Fantastic work Adam!
Superb Build
Only Great Allegro I have ever seen , cant wait to see it Complete..

Nice tubing. Looking forward to seeing this finished!
You're🎉 doing well. Pudding, keep on going, buddy 💥
