This is the reason why I have the highest respect for theater actors/singers. Acting with intense emotion then sing in awkward positions. Truly amazing!
that's why i prefer watching musicals
Underfighter73 what's the title of the music?
And do it it 7x a week! now thats amazing!
This is The Hour from Miss Saigon
Underfighter73 agree! Miss Saigon has even taken it to another level
People say lea can't act, but they need to watch this.
Miss Benefit baby Anyone who says Lea can't act needs their head examined. I saw her in the Original Broadway Casts of Miss Saigon and Les Miserables and she is one of the finest female Broadway Actresses.
Miss Benefit baby if Lea doesn't know how to act she will not win as the best actress of Tony Oliver award in Broadway twice she won the miss sailing and les miserables try to sing and act
You cannot win a Tony if you can't act & sing as well.
Really? People say that?
Kim's child in the latest Miss Saigon is like a puppet..hahahaha
This is why Theatre is deemed as the highest form of art.
"Art" is a form of emotional expression. Gatekeeping one way of story telling isnt a personality trait. Every medium of story telling has their own merits. It just makes me sad when theater fans adopt a sense of superiority because they have too much pride in their preferred entertainment 😔
@@carlosalejandroalvarenga4913 yea!!! all mediums are good for different purposes, they all have limitations and strengths. anyone who says otherwise needs to explore more and enjoy more art hehe.
Because it is live and you can’t afford to make mistakes.
No take two
@@Pretty_Boy_Proud_Fil-Am wait is art supposed to be objectively perfect and flawless. I mean, abstract art who is she?
they need to start showing this in school so even the millenials would actually know and be more familiar with Lea. rather than just being seen as a judge on the voice.
My teacher did show us this last last year! All of us were starstrucked with her acting!
Millennials know who she is. Millennials range in age from around 25 to 40 years old.
You mean gen Z? Yes! She was actually being taught in school. In elementary and secondary.
@@markangelobartolome7785 I'm Gen Z and I've idolized Lea all my life 😁
Just last week, our school talked about theatrical stuff which is really great. 2 or 3 years ago they have been producing theatrical plays and my schoolmates were really great for a school that does not focus much on arts but science and math.
"You will not touch him. Don't touch my boy. He's what I lived for. He's my only joy."
huhuhu my soul
I always lose it at that line omg 😖 so emotional
YES THAT LINE ALWAYS HITS ME😭😭😭
I just cried 😭
i almost cry
Mother Said"😌
It's actually sad that even tho she's already an international legend some Filipino's still take her for granted and disrespect her as an artist.
Internationally? She's very well respected and looked up to. The recent Tony awards where she presented? When she went out? The vibe out of that uproar cheer/applause was proof enough. I mean after these years, she's not just lea salonga. She's THE LEA SALONGA.
She was already the Pride of the Philippines even before Pacquiao and Queen Pia did. 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
And that's why sometimes I wish she never goes back to philippine showbiz, they do not deserve her. but she seems to be having fun while doing The Voice so as long as she gets to do what she loves then that's fine. I know every successful person has haters but she's THE Lea Salonga for crying out loud, she does not deserve the hate, especially coming from people from her own country. They don't know shit.
So true. Lea Salonga is a force! A fucking legend! I am fucking crying!
This performance that you're watching was performed in Manila, year 2000. Yung mga nagsisigawang audience ay kapwa ko pilipino.
She is not appreciated in the Philippines because she does not have the MASA appeal. Too bad, since Filipinos should learn from her professionalism as an artist. And the way she sings should be emulated instead of the usual Mariah Carey wannabes that I keep hearing. I am tired of hearing screeches instead of sustained high notes to smooth transition to low notes and vice versa.
Daenerys Clarke well said
I saw her twice in this role; once in London and once in New York. She was simply magnificent. Though I also saw the place twice without her, it remained powerful but not as well done. She defined that role.
Woah really? You're lucky man
No wonder..she got Best actresses on the same role both in London (Olivier) and in New York (Tony)..A Legend indeed ! Not to mention those legendary works being behind the Disney voices of Jasmine (Aladdin) and Mulan.
.
OH MY GOD I JUST CRIED A LOT
"Look Thuy...this is my son." Oh I love how she delivered it...

Isn’t she the greatest filipino artist of all time ? Simply the best !
Sandra chanco yes she is to me
"Greatness" is imeasurable. I can't see she's the "greatest" because "artist" doesn't just mean singing and acting. But I'd say that she is one of the best singers and actors I know.
Couldn't agree more..
Yesss she is the greatest filipino artist of all time.....the crystal clear voice...the original disney princess.....the legend....its hard to act on stage....than movies....when you act on stage no cut...no editing is allowed... LEA SALONGA IS THE BEST...♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
She still has a lot to prove, show and achieve in the other fields of entertainment or art to be called the greatest Filipino artist of all time.
This is depressing af. You can tell that a performance is outstanding and classic when it gets to you. I just felt her pain and emotions I feel like I'm her all throughout the scene. These people are legends. Handsdown
did she cheat on the husband? and had a baby with the american?
mike z no. There is agreement with that soldier about marriage but she refused. And when she met the american, they had a baby.
m z her parents arranged a marriage with his parents before the Vietnam War started then they got displaced, both sets of parents got murdered, and Kim met an American soldier whom she married and had a child with before he got sent back to America and they got split up. Now the man in this song wants to respect his and her parents wishes for them to get married, but she still loves the American
Two Filipinos shining brilliantly on stage and proudly raising the Philippine flag for the whole world to see!
Edited: I stand corrected. There were 3 Filipinos not 2 (Not to mention a lot of the casts here were also Filipinos). Thanks for pointing it out.
That "pimp" Leo Valdez is a Filipino too.
@@sepiesch oo nga pala! Thanks for pointing it out!
@Lothlorein UwU what?
is this musical or theater? I'm confused
Tatlong Pilipinos, hindi dalawa
OMG an 18-year-old acting singing like this! Incredible.
Lea's not 18 here. She was around 18 (more of turning 18) in the original production of Miss Saigon.
She wasn’t 18 when she played this, I think she was 29
Sofia Isa ?? No?? Where did you hear that she was 29 when she did the role?
@@dangosandlemons She was 29 in this video. Indeed she started her career in Miss Saigon at the age of 17-18 with the original West End production in 1989, and she kept the role Kim until 2000 with Broadway production.
This video was from the Broadway production of Miss Saigon performed in Manila in 2000. If you listen to the original soundtrack of Miss Saigon, Lea sounded very young and pure. But in this video, her voice had grown skillful and a bit mature.
Today they have Tiktok 😆
i wish i had a time machine so i can watch lea do miss saigon.. my heart breaks knowing i could never see this legend live in her prime.
OMG, SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME! T_T
I heard she will do Miss Saigon again but not as Kim, as Gigi

Theater actors/actresses are definitely the bomb! They have to perform their memorized scripts! They just could not afford to slip up because it could ruin the whole show, unlike television/movie actors where the director could call, "Cut!" so that his actors could redo their mistakes.
The highest respect are to the theater performers! Woohoo! 😘
Catherine Abellanosa I agree...acting amd singing without a script (memorized) is phenomenal..
It's actually interesting when a pro does mess up and cleans it up. I've seen that a couple of times.
Correct
Actually, the whole "movie/film actors have it easier" is a total myth; they have to perform every singe action *exactly* the same with each take from a new angle. As far as "going with the flow" goes, screen acting is harder; not to mention that many of the best screen performances come from great actors themselves, not multiple takes. We must not confuse the director's job with the actor's job.
BTW, in theatre weonly have "ACTORS" we don't have "Actresses". 😊 but yeah, I'm agree with you.
projection, diction, emotions, pronunciations, word clarity, audience impact, volume, style, tone, enunciation .... Lea has all these.. she’s a total package
Ms. Lea is so good in this but can we also talk about Mr. Robert Seña? Man he is also delivering greatness in here.
idk why, but for me, Robert Seña is the best "Thuy", he portays the character perfectly and their acting together is just perfection.
yess truly...
Deserving of highest praise to both Lea n Robert n u r pinoys .bravo.
Agreed. This is the first time I've liked Thuy
Fun fact: Robert Seña is married to the actress who plays Gigi. So, why is Thuy asking for Kim’s affections when he’s already married to Gigi?
@@vicentehizon6202 sist this is way before thuy started simping for Gigi😖
2020. Leah is a national treasure. She should be a living national artist.
She is.. She was already on books of the Secondary Schools. Those Filipino's who bashes her we're idiots. Know nothing how she brings honor to our country the Philippines.🇵🇭
she’d be the greatest national artist of the Philippines. She delivers Perfection. I declame and this lady sings as if she is only declaiming.Declamation in itself is not easy. She delivers every word as if she is only reciting a memorized speech.

Yes it is.
Love Lea Salonga , Just saw Miss Saigon on stage in Dallas two weeks ago , Great show.
If you Haven't seen it yet, go .
Me too! Goosebump!!
I'm actor on stage and I know how hard it is to remember lines, entrances and exits, The beats of the musical instruments and the stage lights and the body heat you produce plus the body heat everyone else produces. And it is easy to make mistakes on stage while films and T.V, they can go back re edit and go back on their lines. Things like this makes theatre performances better and more emotional
Jason Jayawardena I'm a theater actor as well and this is very accurate. I agree on this
I’m also a theatre actor, not quite professional yet but that’s the goal. People don’t realise how much this wipes you out. It’s physically and mentally demanding. Doing a full 8 hour work day, then shoving some crap sandwich down your face as you drive to the theatre to get into hair and make up, then putting on whatever weird costume you have that was designed by someone who hates humans XD. Most of the time at show week I live on energy drinks and caffeine. Iv has so many costumes that were SO UNCOMFORTABLE it was literally hell. But the adrenaline rush of being out there is so worth it! My worst outfit by far was the nun outfits for Sister Act. Nun habits are HOT A.F and your onstage about 70% of the time, so you don’t get much of a rest!
Jason Jayawardena The common misconception is that screen acting is easier because you can always "do over." That's simply not true; if an actor isn't giving it their all, the director can yell, "Cut!" all she wants, but the performance isn't going to be the best it can be unless the actor delivers, same as in theater. Ask any screen actor who truly gave it their all.
@@Mira_Dunia i get your point but in the screen there's always this safety net that everything can be reshoot unlike in the theater where the musical director cannot intervene while the actors are at the middle of the play, they do commit mistakes however but how they segue (especially professionals) can be pretty amusing.
@@jkentan True. But reshoots in film can get costly, and if there's a bad actor, no amount of reshoots can fix that.
In England, when one of theirs become famous or did something that brought honor to their country, the queen made them a Knight or a Dame
(Sir Paul McCarthney, Sir Sean Connery, Sir Elton John, Dame Maggie Smith). The Philippines should reward Filipinos who brought honor to the country by giving them "Medals of Honor". They can be anybody and from all walks of life: actress, actors, singers, doctors, nurses, teachers
Lea has one. It is called Order of Lakandula or OL.
We have the same thing in the Philippines.
Everything is about goddam politics here. It's sickening!
I agree. She should be honoured in her home country. I've only found her now.
@@kelvinsmallwood6315 she is deeply honoured in Philippines. Almost everyone know she is a legend. Also, she was given the highest form of title that a civilian can hold, "Ordeal of Lakandula"

It's because here in philippines, not many people are watching theatrical performances. It was not our custom, so we wouldn't be a judge of how great Lea is, but we all know that she is the first filipina ever to play in Miss Saigon, and on top of that, the main role. We are very proud of her for reaching international bounds and seeing how international people react to her talent and abilities makes us also see and appreciate the talent that she has. But Filipinos are not new to singers, so in regards to voice, it is evident how great and astounding Lea is among other artists. It's just that she is performing more in theaters that we don't have access to seeing how great she is in performing.
Facts, no printer.
Kudos to Robert Sena's performance as well! Both great Filipino theater actors on that stage!

There are comments That are saying that lea is being praised in all countries except for her own; the Philippines. This is not true, in fact we have been learning about her in school. We also recognize her as "iconic" and "legendary". We do not take her for granted. We are also not hating her as an actress, in fact, we associate her name with the idea of being a great actress, she became an adjective. We Filipinos love her, and are proud of her.
I agree. And what you said is TRUE
Nah. Lots of Filipinos still don't like her. All of my Father's family doesn't like her singing, and they didn't really see her acting either. That's 7 siblings in my father's gen with 2-5 children (my cousins) each. My mom also didn't like her until I kept playing Lea songs in the house for a couple months.
Many of my classmates also don't really like her. They like newer celebs like Kathryn Bernardo or whatever her name is.
My mother's brother's family likes her though. But they moved to America really early on. So I kinda see why other people say Lea is celebrated in foreign countries, but not her own.
@@Anonymous-in4ed that's it? You said that a lot of people hate her because People y'know doesn't like her?

It's IMHO that the Manila production is better than the West End production because of Sena and the engineer was actually played by an Asian. Also, by this time, Lea was a super pro.
+H1delta TRUE!
+H1delta I agree, but I really do love Jonathon Pryce's portrayal! His voice is spectacular and he gives off a perfect "sleezy" Engineer.
Yup - Jonathan Price and the white guy who played Tui in the West End original did a great job - but when I saw it they had these ridiculous prosthetics on their eyes to make them look chinese which was rather distracting. They gave great performances but it's more realistic to use people of the correct ethnicity for those roles. Having said that - I recently saw a production of Amadeus with a black guy playing Salieri who did a good job - but yeah - having the wrong ethnicity for a historical role is kinda dumb.
@@brickmissing8295 but it's theatre. It's literal roleplaying so ethnicity of actors doesnt really matter. Anyone can be played by anyone as long as you give the most satisfying performance. Heck, even people play trees and rocks.
Just thought of this now, but Kim shooting Thuy, the way she holds him, her scream, and Tam watching is an eerie foreshadowing of Act 2.
And the fact the instrument of death is Chris's gun.

Lea Salonga you are the best. I saw Miss Saigon in New York, but it was your understudy. I wish it was you. I watched this video several times and it always makes me cry. Your singing and acting is superb.
How can someone say SHE CAN'T ACT??? WTF is this?? Very deserving for a Olivier and Tony Awards!!!!!
Goosebumps, tears on my face, my mind flying with imaginations, and many more!
I mean what else should I feel?!
I watched this numerous times, but I was still moved. Lea is so incredible! Hands down. Ugh
