It’s scary to just see it disappear if the radar
It likely disappeared from the radar before it crashed. "Too low for flight following" refers to the ability to be seen on the ATC's radar screen, not the safety of the helicopter's altitude.
And just makes it even sadder to know what's happening at that time.

The helicopter was lacking the crucial part or machinery that would have told them the fog levels were bad. The Cops had the ability to ground their choppers!

Big life lesson here is to never ever fly in dense fog conditions to where you cant see the ground or to your sides. It’s not worth your life and the pain to the people you leave behind.

@@Iarryfisherman The aircraft was completely fine. He was flying through dense fog and couldn't see. He was flying at high speed at an extremely low altitude of only 500 ft in fog through an area that is nothing but cliffs mountains and hills. He was trying to depend solely on his radar instrument. Which would not have been a problem had he had a radar instrument that was designed to calculate and detect terrain. He was heading head first into the Calabasas Mountains and he had no idea at first. He couldn't see anything. I think he caught a glimpse of the Calabasas Mountains through the fog and once he realized he was heading straight for them he tried to hurry up and make a quick u turn. Which he did because there was a lady that said this is what she saw over her home. They also put out recordings of calls and a radar recording from the control center that showed the exact path and when he tried to make the sharp u turn. You see him on the radar flying straight and then make a sharp u turn to the left. He dropped off of the radar after that.

@@EatPie69 You can fly with instrument rules but they chose visual rules. You think jets fly only if the pilot can see outside? I bet those jumbo jets could go from take off to landing without looking out the window. This is pilot error chose to bypass for whatever reason and a big price was paid.

In all due respect, I will NEVER understand how anyone would want to fly when there's bad weather, especially fog, unless there's no choice which is never the case really.
Just take a car and be a lot safer if you have to be somewhere in bad weather, they would still be alive today.
He’s definitely done it plenty of times before and trusts his pilot/helicopter. They probably planned to take the heli to skip the traffic and make the game on time but didn’t expect fog being that bad. What I don’t understand was why wasn’t there a EGPWS (Automatically forces the helicopter away from the object it’s about to hit)? It’s just only a 30k investment and you’d think someone of the magnitude of Kobe would certainly have one😰

ryan sutter I don’t even think that would’ve worked. They were moving at 150 knots or 167mph and the terrain changed quickly at the base of the mountain.
Cole Tipton that’s true, but it wasn’t a steep mountain it was more of a slopped hillside. It certainly would’ve cleared that imo. Either way, the pilot was overconfident and should’ve filed for an IFV and took that the time penalty instead of filing a special VFR and going rogue behind the controls.

My mom is one in Memphis and she's been trying to get me to join her. She pulls double shifts almost daily and comes back stressed as hell a lot of days. I could never do that job under that kind of stress with the amount of close calls she has had.

Kevon Wang It doesn’t change anything that he was going “too fast”. He shouldn’t of been flying in the fog, and there were a bunch of other factors that led to the crash. Like not having an altitude meter. 160 is the average for a helicopter and without an altitude meter he probably thought they were at a normal altitude. There’s also a thing called spatial orientation where you can’t really tell what direction you’re going.

Have you seen the actual crash video? The helicopter didn't fly into the hill. It was in a death spiral completely out of control which crashed them into the hill. Something had to have caused the pilot to lose control.

I try to look on the bright side of life, for example, when i was younger half my family died in a road accident, and as sad as I was for a long time, a few weeks before Xmas I realized how much money I would save. Kobe trusted the pilot like we all do when we get on planes, when we get on boats, get in cars, etc. He'd flown with this guy many times. I think they probably chatted beforehand with a "what do you think?" from Kobe. They maybe talked about special flight clearances, alternate routes, etc. The pilot thought he had it and again, Kobe trusted him. The other passengers trusted Kobe and the kids trusted all the adults. Anyway, I think the guy got disoriented in the fog.

I don't think it's the pilot's fault. People are quick to put blame on him because he's the one flying the helicopter but kobe could've pressured him a little bit and I'm sure the pilot didn't want to but he's flown kobe everywhere so many times before so he thought alright.

On radar you can see pilot swerving and losing control of the helicopter. You can see it going up then down as it's going down at high speeds.

@@Unknown-zt8mz It's fair because although all people are equal in our value as souls, not all are as influential and contribute as much to this world than others, therefore Kobe was the notable world known victim who is worthy of being recognized the most. The others, while important, did not make the splash in this world like him and that's why we didnt know them until now. We've known Kobe since 1996.

I imagine that morning Kobe being the generous man he was deciding to treat the coach, the team mates & parents to a nice helicopter ride to the game. He probably called them the previous day telling them they could fly with him & to be at the airport at 9a...& I bet they were excited, thinking how cool it'd be. :(
They should’ve never been approved to fly in such horrid conditions. Should’ve had him land in Glendale and wait for a bit. Even the police choppers weren’t flying. Such an awful way to go.
