My brother and I did these drills with a hostage target. A red dot makes all the difference for me personally

Yeah a punch on the chin would shut my lights off so a bullet shattering the bone would pretty much stop most people cold.

I know,I switched to a floppy fox shoulder holster because by the end of the day my hip holsters Always pulled down on my pants and I'd constantly have to pull up and keep tightening my belt. I'll never know how guys work and hip carry w/o issues.😔
@@Blap552 You need a stiffer belt, regular dress belts don't work. They roll over and down, but yeah a stiffer belt will solve your problem.

@@DJBillionator I personally have that belt and yeah. When you put it where you want it, it ain't moving on ya. Only thing I find a tad uncomfortable is the width of the "buckle" as I'm a tad thicker lol. I tend to shift the whole belt so the buckle sits between 10-11 o'clock instead of high noon 🤣

I appreciate how you kept all of it in the video. I'm sure there are channels out there that would do an entire retake of the video in order to score mostly A zone hits on camera. We are all in fact mere mortals and everyone has their bad days. My mind goes into a diminished 'I'm being watched' mode whenever I'm on camera or showing someone what I can do, and I invariably perform much worse than if I was just doing my thing in my default mindset.
The faster you draw and shoot the mor accurately you are shooting. Amazing 🤩
I have a habit of over-correcting when I have too much time. :)
When you think, you make mistakes
It comes just from holding something in front of you your hands start getting tired the moment you extend them even if you don't notice it. I learned awhile back practicing on my own that I could point shoot almost anything within 7 to 10 yards If I just got the gun out and shot fast then could aim for additional doses.

The Jack Wilson drill! I’m pretty consistent at 2.2 seconds or less DTFS on the head at 15 yards. It’s pretty fun to work on honestly.

I shoot moving 6" targets at 25 yards. Really slows me down and stresses sight and trigger control.
Save on ammo too.
It's seeing a guy like John struggle a bit at the range on a given day is what gives me the encouragement to keep going back to the pistol range every week when it's so tempting to just shoot drills I can already do and look at the pretty hits on the paper. Do not work on what you have already mastered! Work through the suck!! Thanks John!

most of ranges dont allow you to do quick draw practice.
As someone who knows nothing about guns , i have to ask why would a gun range not allow you to do quick draw practice shooting , i would have thought that is why your at the range in the first place , you want to learn to be a good and safe shooter

I respect the honesty. We are not Jerry M every day. Reason to practice.
I have this debate with some of my colleagues on a weekly basis… “why do you shoot for such small targets!?!?” Or “in a gunfight you never use your sights because it’s so close.” Both said by the same people who think “combat accuracy” is a standard and have never been in a gunfight. If you can do it on the range when nothing is at stake but your pride and hit the A Zone quickly you will be better prepared to hit the threat when your heart is racing and your life or the life of a loved one is at stake.

We have a drill where we do something like this here in Texas. Prior to 2019, it never had a name but we've now christened it The Jack Wilson Drill.
Take any silhouette target, doesn't matter which one, and take a deck of playing cards or stack of index cards. Staple it over the T-zone area and practice drawing from concealment and double tapping the target at 15 yards. Goal is to keep both shots on the card and to do it all in 3 seconds or less.
The purpose of this isn't to be anything too technical, but for anyone to work with what they got to get this drill. It's low round count, needs very little materials, and it can be measured by a standard that is formally recognized.
Pretty spicy to get 2 shots in 3 seconds at that distance for most!
15 yard headshots seem to be the uspsa qualifier special. It's hard af though

I think the application of that topic to the defensive pistol training realm would make for some great content.
Have read Lanny's book and use the principles regularly!

@@SeudXe Yep and beyond my comfort zone which is less than 10 yrds odds are im gonna miss. My style (which I practice or use to prior to ammo prices getting yeeeee haaaaa) is one perp gets 1/3 of my loaded rounds which is 3 center mass, more if needed. Hope I never have to call on my skill set in real live.
I suggest starting slow, and letting the speed part come on its own. A old saying goes, (you can not learn fast, what you cannot learn slow.) Hope this helps.

This is actually one of my favorite drills - It’s my go to “long range” standard for any small CCW pistol. I have to be able to make that standard 4/5 times on demand or I won’t carry the gun. (I give myself 3-3.5 seconds on 3x5 card) At my skill level, I don’t carry a small .380 or J-frame.

This is why an RMR has taken over the market. I do this in under 1.5 seconds at 25 yards on a 2/3 size steel target. I’m feeling pretty good about myself right now but I’m still slow and I know just how fast things can go to sh/t! Getting your shirttail stuck in your grip, getting a bad/two finger grip, there are many ways to screw it up and without practice you may find this out the hard way!

3:06 under USPSA rules at least we give ya those, as long as it breaks the line of perforation on a cardboard target you get the higher zone of score. And besides, that's still a solid, instantly incapacitating headshot. The main reason headshot alphas are the way they are is because of gaming considerations(otherwise they'd be a misshapen T)

My friends and I use 3x5 index cards that are numbered. Head down number order called 4 rounds 4 seconds or 10 rounds with a reload in ten seconds. Every round off target or second over you chip a dollar in a pot for breakfast. Max twenty dollars per round. I like other people buying me breakfast.

Oh man... I wish I were American so I could easily spend time in the range like this. Here in Brazil we have to fire reloaded ammo in the range because original factory ammo is super expensive and full of restrictions
To me the best way to use this is use IDPA headbox circle for me would make more sense vs the tiny A zone head
Everything said at the outset of this video is correct regarding average distances when a self-defense firearm usage typically takes place - it's usually between 9 - 21 feet.
It does, however, move onto an erroneous presupposition.
Did someone of any shooting authority or reputation claim a 15 yard (45 foot) head-shot shouldn't be in a carrier's "repertoire"? No.
Of course establish close-in threat mitigation shooting proficiency. That's where the "problem" statistically begins. But obviously be well-practiced, and prepared, to take somewhat longer distance shots.
It seems we need a video to advise us of that, I guess.

John, keep in mind also that a bullet to the head by even a .22 doesn't necessarily have to be a fatal hit. If even a grazing wound it can still put the other guy down at least long enough to matter
A bravo equivalent area hit with a 9mm is certainly gunna be a behaviour/action changing moment for any violent criminal. Good work John. Great vid.
You're quite the sharpshooter! Have you tried IDPA with your standard carry gun? Some shots can be up to 20 yards, but most are 15 or less. Head shots up to 10 yd in scenarios or up to 15 yd in standards stages. 1 handed up to 10 yd, weak hand only up to 7 yd. Retention shot at about 2 yards.
I practice that shot with the thought of being in a situation where people are running around bent over and the shooter/bad guy...is standing tall...

In an armed conflict, distance is a two edged sword. It works against your opponent’s accuracy, and it works against your accuracy. Proper training makes it MORE of a liability for your opponent, so TRAIN, TRAIN, TRAIN. Mass shooting incidents are unlikely in your day to day existence, and being the “first victim” is even more unlikely; you will probably be at some distance when the flag goes up. Use that distance to your advantage.
I really wish more ranges allowed stuff like this. I’ve never been to one that allows you to draw from concealment, or shoot double shots or whatever.
True. It's not the same when you just pick up your pistol from the table than from a real draw. Haven't found one too.
The two indoor ranges near myself: one allows it under contingency (they reserve the right to deny a shooter as they like), the other allows no holster/draw/shoot ever.
It's a potentially dangerous situation and likely dependent on the area: metro-Denver is not a gun-friendly culture. I would feel exceedingly nervous if people around me were running draw-shoot drills. I think most people here are not very well-grounded in shooting practices and having them play John Wayne would be playing with fire.
I'm lucky, I shoot at an outside range about 26 miles from me! It's a liberal ran operation. I can draw and fire as quickly as I can, double tap, do a mag dump. I personally painted the 3, 5, 7, 10, and 15 yard distance. If I'm the only one on the range, I can run and drill/distance, except farther then 15 yards, that I see on YT. Being a retired veteran, It cost me $75.00 a year....by the way it helps to have 2 retirement checks and not having to work.
Never been to a range that allow draw because it's dangerous when you got people next to you
I'm thinking of joining a Handgun Club here in Australia so I can get my hands on a handgun. I wouldn't be able to use it for self-defence or anything but I'd still love to get my marksmanship better so if I'm ever in a situation where I absolutely must use it I'll be ready with the skills needed.
Shooting's also just a lot of fun, so I think I'd spend a lot of time down at the range.

A shot that’s a little lower than the A zone on a head is still gonna be incapacitating in about 99.9% of actual shootings. Not a whole lot of thick bone between that bullet and the base of the brain/brainstem on the back end, which is the immediate night night button if you can hit it. Great drill to train!

This is a good example of why center mass shots are important. The demonstration was under ideal circumstances/setting with good lighting on a non-moving target. If a head shot is absolutely necessary, sure take what you got, but otherwise aim for the larger area. IMO

I zero my dot at 10 yards and confirm at 25. Either a 10 or 25 yard zero is fine for a pistol.

I train down here at universal shooting academy and was actually practicing those yesterday at 15 yards. I wasn't doing a timer. I got some in the a zone but beat the heck out of the neck area. New subscriber. Yeah I feel ya about great shooters. My mentor frank Garcia puts the in the head a zone on swingers! Of course Shannon smith too. By the way you did great!

I was reading one of Jim cirrilos books and one of his partners said something similar, if you can shoot something at 25 feet you can hit a head shot at 3- 5 yards no problem .

My range won’t let us draw from concealment on the line. Might need to get a shot timer and find a new spot. I’m definitely not as good as Mr. Correia.
You can start from low ready, too. Just subtract some time, like 0.5-0.75ish.
I appreciate seeing a mere mortal demonstrait an effective self training technique. It was a little bit distracting to see you pick up the timer every time . . . But good example. Could use more discussion regarding the implications of headshots.
Legal and moral issues are discussed on Friday's in John's Briefs. Picking up the timer was required to be able to see the time.
