    Working on cars teaches you how to break down big problems into small ones. In addition, time management and deligation. These are useful life skills.

      I totally agree, breaking down an engine and forget what goes where, working until the early hours as I have work the next day, lastly delegating the job to the mechanics who know what they are doing!!

    Glad you guys posted this. I just picked up a high-mileage (193k and some change) 2007 Mazdaspeed 3 yesterday, so I'm looking forward to messing with it a bit and maybe doing some small-time racing.

    I'm been in the car community for my entire life, My dad and uncle ran a hot rod shop from the mid 70's until 2000 when dad passed away and my #1 piece of advice is don't be afraid to look outside the box for a project car, Especially if you don't have the funds to build it the, find something close or is a different year that you can pick up cheaper, everyone wants a 72 SS Chevelle but they don't have 72 SS Chevelle so go find a 74 Chevelle and build that, Yes I know.... it's less of a cool car and it's a different body style BUT you can buy a 74 Chevelle for $3000-$4000 and drive it home all day long, you can't even look at a 72 Chevelle roller for less than $10,000. My 2nd piece of advice is Rattle Can paint is your friend, but make sure it's a quality paint. My latest project is a 96 2 door Grand Am, I've never been a Grand Am guy but I paid $1500 for it and drove it home and beyond a good clean up, the engine bay needs a rattle can rebuild, the outside needs a paint job and some new wheels. It doesn't need much, it is my opinion the first timers project car, It doesn't need much but it needs just enough to that the average person can make it their own. Presently It's White with Beige interior but I'm going to paint it Sunstone Yellow, which is a color they used on the Firebirds, Lemas and GTO's in 1975, with some GTA Wheels, I'm going up a wheel size from 14" to 15" but there should be plenty of room in the wheel wells to do it. I'm not building a full on race/show car, I'm just building a daily driver that I can still have fun with on the weekends taking it to Cruise-ins, Cars and Coffee's and local car shows. I'm not putting ALOT of money into it, I've capped my all-in budget at 6k, which gives me $4500 to work with and honestly I don't think I'll hit that because even though I'm going all the way down to bare metal on the body I'm doing it all myself.

    Ironically I’m currently eye balling a 2015 Lexus IS 250 since I’m more of cruising cars and coffee type of guy. An I’m kinda of a Lexus loyalist I’m lying I’m a huge Lexus fan

    hey , howdy , im really looking to buy a old e30 because of the fact that i love them and they are underrated in my country , speaking of country there is no clean e30s in my whole country and they are all rusted and crashed , i just wanted to know does it make sense to buy a running e30 without a dashboard crack but full of rust or not

    To me the best thing to do is buy everything exactly like you want it and try to get the best deal because all used cars and especially all the cars is going to have a problem so try to beat half the problem by getting everything you want in the beginning then it won’t be so much of a problem

      If you're talking about tools, I've used the "buy what is needed for the job" approach. No need to buy an O2 socket until you need to replace the O2 sensor. That could be several years from now. I started with a basic wratchet and driver set, then moved on to wrenches and deep sockets. Later I bought a pair of jack stands and a jack. I lived on those tools alone for years, replacing alternators, starters, water pumps, and timing belts. A breaker bar and a socket adapter were quick additions. But again, didn't buy them until I needed them.
      Using the buy everything you need first approach seems really expensive to me. Especially if you throw power tools into the mix.
      Just a thought.

    Hi ideal I have a question for u guys I’m wondering what ur favourite pic for a reliable everyday driver that’s a bit of allrounder I’m living here in Sweden and the roads here ain’t really sustained for a drift car and a rally car isn’t really ideal either my budget ain’t to big but maybe u have a good idea

    I did auto body in tech sadly should have done auto mechanic instead. Id like to learn more about how to fix my own shit instead of going to a garage. Some things I can do but I'd like to learn more.

      If you can read, your best friend is a repair manual. (Haynes or Chiltons). They're not as complete as an OEM service manual, but they're based on complete teardowns. They have vital info like torque values, viscosities, tightening sequences, electrical diagrams, etc. They also have a pretty comprehensive troubleshooting guide that provides good context to where to look when a problem arises. Additionally, these are sold for individual vehicles and typically covers many years. For the miata, a single Haynes manual will cover from 90-2005. That's a lot of years. The manuals come complete with image references so the reader knows what's being discussed. The manual also includes a tool list and even covers regular maintenance, as well as maintenance intervals for fluids and belts.
      All in all, it's the mechanic's bible for both the newb and the seasoned veteran. I most certainly reference mine when doing major maintenance that I don't want to mess up.
      As I alluded to, I'm a Haynes guy, but other people prefer Chiltons. They're around $20-$30 and worth every penny. Its a great place to get started if you don't know much. You can find Haynes at Autozone and Chiltons at Oriellys. Both you could probably find on Amazon.
      Just get one that is for your make and model of vehicle. After a while, you'll have a library of them from all the cars you've owned.

    2007 335i E90 is a great project car picked one up at 108k miles full stock never tuned for $7500 and with full bolt ons this thing is a blast 18.9lbs psi on twins when wide open ! Work on it your self, DO NOT EVEN THINK about going to a german mechanic for installing modifications, truth be told they don't want to do it for you so they will charge you a kidney like this man says.
