Vintage Housewares - Canister Sets (Flour, Sugar, Coffee, Tea)

- As part of the series looking at vintage housewares, here is the Cavalcade collection of canister sets. These sets - usually containing four canisters - sat proudly on kitchen counters for generations. Examples in bright chrome, plastic, aluminum, glass and ceramic help to add a little personality to any kitchen decor. These common kitchen canisters were often found at dime stores and department stores and manufactured by companies such as Kromex, Tupperware, West Bend, Ransburg, Pyrex, Treasure Craft and others.

Growing up in the south our canister set always had flour, cornmeal, sugar and tea bags. Coffee was kept in the can it came in. Most everyone made biscuits in the morning and then cornbread with supper and a pitcher of sweet tea. I love your channel, always interesting and brings back memories.
Hi Alice! So interesting how they were used in the south. It makes sense that one was used for cornmeal. Here in Michigan, they were flour and sugar. I know my mom kept tea bags in the tea canister, but she kept coffee filters in the coffee canister and just left her coffee in the can, which she kept in the fridge. Thanks!
I love the old kitchen canisters on the counter setup. All you gotta do is lift the lid while you're working on something. I hope it comes back in style again.

I'll always remember the copper colored aluminum canisters my grandmother had. And she also stored her Christmas cookies in old coffee cans wrapped with Christmas gift wrap. So many good memories! Thanks Kevin! And Mary Ann! Love everyone of you (Ralph too lol)

I collect old canister sets, and have a ceramic set that was sold by Sears, with Strawberries, that I use every day. I have a metal yellow set with recipes, that I display on top of my cabinets. Love them.

Mons original set was a spun aluminum set with black lids and matching grease can with strainer. It also had the salt and pepper to match. She wanted more counter space, so she found a set that may have been from the 30's or 40's that was four triangular ceramic canisters on a wooden rotating base with a round wooden lid covering all.it took up so little space in the corner that she used it for forty years or more. She also bought the same ones when she would find them at yard sales, or in thrift or antique stores. Those she gave to all of us kids. My grandmother had a long all in one piece that had small feet on the bottom raising it off of the counter. It was all in chrome. It was low slung and had the bins that pulled out and tilted down. She used it for fifty years or more. I'm still looking for one like it. These were space saving designs that you just cannot find now days. My grandmother also had the matching wall mounted holder for wax paper, tin foil, and rolled brown paper towels, which she had mounted on the inside of her brown closet door.

I remember a pink and black metal canister set made by Decoware and mom had a dustpan to match. The plastic square set with white flowers, but in green. Of course, Tupperware set.
I have a vintage cream and copper metal set with a rooster on them made by Ransburg. I also had a brown square set in the early 80s by Chein. They tried to make them look like old bags of flour, sugar etc.

I have a Pfaltzgraff set called Yorktown on my counter and use them all the time, especially the coffee, sugar, and flour. If you are a baker or someone who loves to cook everyday they are wonderful to have. I bake a lot of bread and it is nice to just have them next too my mixer. Thank you for every walk down memory lane.

My first set of everyday dishes was the Yorktown pattern. I still love it but do not use it now.

My Mom had clear glass canisters with the wooden tops. I used to have a set of those more modern Tupperware canisters in the 90s. The older Tupperware canisters are making a resurgence. The vintage Sears Merry Mushroom and Arnels Mushroom canisters are having their second heyday now.

Unfortunately the tops are broken.
Was able to get a clear replacement when the first went. But have had no luck since.

My mother had wooden canisters with eagles on them, around the time of the Bicentennial into the 80s. I think she had chrome ones when we were kids. I don’t have room for them, I think they take up too much space as you say. All we have out is a vintage crock for the coffee, for my coffee head husband. :)

We had the chrome GSW canister set. Every time I see one, it brings back wonderful memories! So grateful for what you do. Holding on to precious memories! On a side note, I noticed the transferware on the shelves. Would love to see you talk about it!

I have my orange Tupperware set to this day all four pieces with all the lids and I still use it
Had a sets of the Tupperware round ones in brown, Orange and yellow. Gave the brown set to a friend still have the others though.
Grandma had or still has a brown set that I grew up enjoying many an oreo cookie from.
Deco ware was very popular in the fifties and had fruit designs and apples design. I hope you get some- they would look great for your collection. Thanks for sharing.

Growing up we had a similar set to the first set you showed on the kitchen counter. I still have it, but have it put away.
Mom had a canister set with the mushrooms from the 70’s. Fun to see all the different sets you have collected. When we lived in the north we put the usual Flour, Sugar, tea and coffee. When we moved to the south we put Flour, cornmeal, sugar and tea. Just fun to go down memory lane. Thank you for showing us your collections. Always look forward to a cavalcade food notification❤️

Very interesting !!! Some canister sets had matching bread boxes. Circa late 1940 or 1950.

Oh how I love seeing these! It brings back such good memories from my Mom and Grandma's kitchen. I always wondered what items will be considered vintage and coveted from my kitchen some day!

My mom had a metal “wood grained” looking set that she always used and it was kept on the top of our refrigerator. I think it was made by the same company as the set you have on the counter (first that you showed) in the cavalcade kitchen, because they had the same lids. My grandmothers was a buttery yellow round set on a lazy Susan and it all fit together with a brown large plastic”y” lid that covered the top. I thought you may have had one in the shoppe but I didn’t see it. I’ll try and send a pic of both if I can find them!

I can see the dishes my family had when I was a kid in the 60's @ 8:33, on the right side 3rd shelf from the bottom, white with little blue and green flowers and trees. I think they were a grocery store premium.
That dish pattern is called Swiss Alpine or sometimes Swiss Chalet Alpine. They were very popular at the time. Thanks!
My grandmother had the metal set with round black labeled lids. I recognize the last metal set you showed with the printed pattern, but in a cylindrical shape. I still use the orange Tupperware set in my cupboard.
I enjoyed this very much. Growing up, my mom had a round metal canister set. IT was a real pink with black lids. on front of them was a black and white floral design. She also had a bread box that matched. Sounds hilarious but people had such things in the middle 50s to early 60s.

Both my grandmother and my mother had canister sets. My mother had a white ceramic set with flowers and my grandmother had a yellow Tupperware set. I still use the yellow Tupperware set in my kitchen and the seal is amazing!

Great sets and they are harder to find at the auctions. My mom had the Kromex chrome set with black vertical handles. It was probably a wedding gift.

Canister sets became popular when fitted cabinetry began taking the place of the Hoosier, and the countertop became the bake center instead. We had the West Bend set. Lookin' stylish with that ascot, Kevin! Thanks for sharing your collection.

My grandmother had the same Tupperware set
We had a stainless steel wet with a bacon-straining container. I recently got out an old set from the Seventies that's metal and has the company graphics for Lipton tea, Domino sugar, Pillsbury flour, and Maxwell House coffee. They are so colorful and remind me of my twenties.

Granny had a West Bend copper anodized set of four canisters with wooden bun-shaped knobs on top that held flour, sugar, cakes and salt, in that order. She didn't make tea and her coffee was instant. Cakes=cookies at Granny's. Mom had Kromex at first and then changed to glass sugar jars from a kitchen cabinet for sugar and flour. I have one too. Granny also had a breadbox, so I hope you can show those sometime. My sister still uses Granny's canisters. Thanks for the entertaining video!

I have a canister set made out of wood that I bought second hand in the 1980s when I was buying things for my "hope chest". I have never used it, but I can't bear to part with it because it's unusual. They have a rooster painted on the fronts. When my son was leaving to go to University of California at Merced and needed things to set up an apartment, I bought him a avocado green Tupperware canister set at a yard sale.

Very cool. I still have the blue glass apothecary style set that was once my mother's. She got it for Christmas in 1968 if I recall her saying and it came from a hardware store my late uncle on my Dad's side worked at PT for extra Christmas money in N. Georgia. One jar got replaced at one point, but almost every lid has a chip inside. I have an odd one I found and keep on my side table in the living room. I don't use it now but it is decoration on a hanging shelf my late father made in the mid to late 60's. All I did was put some polyurethane protection as it was simply stained at the time, but nothing else to help it be easier to clean of grease. It hangs in my kitchen now and the jars are on it. Don't know what all colors they came in but good friends had a green set from the same period. For all I know, they may have come in amber and a ruby red, and maybe an amethyst color, but at least the blue and green.

This reminds me as a kid I loved to go to the downtown Woolworths with my grandmother, she lived in a big rambling apartment above a store, the home goods were in the basement, huge wooden bins just inside the door held tin toys, those canisters that mooed and other delights like the glass case with matchbox and corgi cars, strange things make an impression on a child...I really think Cavalcade needs a toy department.

My Mom had Tupperware. I have the brown flour one, that I found at her house when she passed. I also have some other Tupperware too. Then she got ceramic. I have a large soup tureen of hers as well.

The aqua and yellow canister sets are actually from Stanley Home Products. You could earn them by having a Stanley party and selling a certain amount. My sister had a set of aqua ones and I have a set that I found at a rummage sale.

I love the tin canister sets from the 1930 s. It makes you think of the old movies where mother is cooking and getting a cup of sugar from the canister to bake cookies. On the Walton's , they had an interesting canister set .

My mom had the Tupperware set with the "burping" lid. She still has it. I recently wanted to buy a cannisters to store my many tea varieties. I had a square cookie tin in a gold tone and decopaged a greeting card to the front of that matched the gold tone of the tin. Then I was able to store all my teas inside. I figured it would keep the teas fresher longer. Old tins can be great containers.

My mom had the Westbend cannister set when we were growing up! Long ago, I had a lime green Tupperware set. Recently, I found a yellow set at our second hand store on our campus (I work at an older adult community) and I nearly jumped out of my skin! I've been looking for years for a yellow set of Tupperware cannisters! 😂

The first set my mum had were aluminum with a letter embossed indicating the contents. Next she got Lincoln Beautyware canisters, breadbox, paper towel/wrap dispenser and trash can all in shaded coppertone to match the appliances. Finally, friends gave her a set of Pfalzgraff canisters in the “Village” pattern. I still have those but they are stored away since I have no use for them. I don’t bake and I don’t drink tea or coffee.

I have a set of canisters like the bin shaped, wood top ones you showed, but mine are a squarish round shape (if that makes sense). They have the same fruit pattern and are stamped USA on bottom. A weird fact about me: I love canister sets, but don't bake so I have no need to store large amounts of flour, sugar ect. I either store random other items in the canisters or just find a place to display them just for show. I have a square wooden set with inner plastic bins on my bathroom shelf storing hygiene items such as cotton balls, q-tips, and floss picks.

Have you ever seen a set by Revere Ware? They were called "Tel-U-Tops". They were circular, stainless steel and with lucite knobs. The knobs were able to be unscrewed, you would then put a little bit of the contents in the knob and then screw it back on the lid. This was their way of letting you know what was inside the canister. I believe they date to about 1955.

I had a set of the copper colored West Bend canisters that were hand me downs from my mother- in - law. She wanted the new avocado plastic ones that matched her avocado stove. This was in 1974.

My mom had several sets of the chrome ones I guess there's stainless steel or 10 dot and she automatically knew what was in each and every one of them and they weren't marked they were playing they didn't even have letters I don't believe. Myself I have a few pieces of the Tupperware and a couple of old bacon dripping ones. But what I've always been looking for and I hope one day I can run across it is the one there that hangs on the wall with the bins in it that is my goal

Hi, We have a canister set like one you have It's the big rectangular box. The top half holds the 4 canisters, and the bottom half is a bread box. The bread box door drops open to reveal a wood cutting board inserted into the back of the door. It sits next our Saran Wrap dispenser. It also holds wax, foil, and paper towels.
Hi Longhairbear! That's a neat canister set you have - nice to have it all in one. Breadboxes with wood cutting boards built in were popular. I'm not sure when pre-sliced bread became common, but many were probably still baking bread at home and slicing it as they needed. Love your foil/wax paper/paper towels dispenser. Like your channel and enjoy the vids that you have posted. I have the set of westbend canisters that you showed towards the end. Any idea how to get a staining on one that was caused by isopropyl alcohol (that got spilled on it). I Tried vinegar, lemon, baking soda still stained. I don’t want to make it worse. They were left to me by a dear aunt who used them for as long as I could remember.
I have the set where the bins are in one big container kind of like the chrome one but plastic or lustoware
I have a 3 piece set made by Revere ware out of stainless steel. I'm quite partial to that brand because my mom had pots and pans made by them.

Scored a set of 3 apple green Servalier Tupperware canisters today. They're circular with the radiating spline lids. I assume they make a better, more airtight seal than metal or ceramic canisters, but I don't actually know.
Hi Mike - the seals on those Tupperware canisters are much tighter than metal ones, for sure. The green ones are great!

I just picked up one of the wall mounted all in one chrome sets. It looks just like the one you showed at 11:30. Sadly it has a lot of rust on the top. If you have any tips on how to remove rust and get it shiny again I would appreciate the advice.
Hi Taylor - nice that you found one. There isn't much you can do about the rust, I'm afraid. These were chrome plated so the rust eats through the chrome. You can try a little fine steel wool and see if that helps, but it may scratch the finish that isn't rusted.

Hi Nanci! I have very few breadboxes - maybe four or five. I do have a couple in plastic that went with canister sets and then a couple metal ones with a wooden cutting board inside of the front cover. When I do an episode in the kitchen studio, if you look on top of the fridge you'll see a red plastic bread box. Thanks!
The long chrome with the bins I have that exact set except my handles are black. It’s made by Lincoln Beautyware. Mine is stamped 1957

I have a Kromex set, and love it's look... however.. I can't seem to find sets that fit tight enough to keep ants out of the sugar.
I've noticed that many of these have loose fitting lids, or the lids have become loose after years of use. Thanks!
My mom had the orange Tupperware set. I think she had a set on a turntable similar to the Rubbermaid. Could the set at 12:00 be a Lincoln Beautyware set?

This explained a lot to me! So two grandmas, my mom, and a great aunt. Four canister sets. Only two were ever used!!! Mom’s first kitchen was turquoise cabinets and copper-tone appliances. She had the West Bend salt shakers and grease container. But a spun-aluminum canister set with anodized copper colored tops. Never used the canister set. Aunt Hetty had a few WW2 canister pieces. Started rusting. Threw them away. One grandmother had a pretty complete lLustreware set which was heavily used and I still have. The other had the set you currently use on your counter and that one is in storage somewhere. Why did mom and aunt hetty NOT use them? Because Aunt Hetty became totally convinced canister sets were unsanitary based on a study done by Tupperware!! So she had a complete set of Millionare line and gave one to mom. They were kept stacked in a cabinet! And that is how I have five sets!!
Hi Rob! Great story about your family's canister sets! Funny how you ended up with so many! I've not heard of the study Tupperware did, but I'm sure it helped them sell many sets of their own! They probably do seal better than the metal containers. Thanks!
