- We finally did one of the biggest movies, The Shawshank Redemption; people talk about this movie a lot and my brother has never seen it! So it was fun to finally introduce it to him.

Fun fact: the original ending of the film was supposed to be just Red in the bus going towards Mexico. Test audiences HATED it, so they filmed the reunion scene after the film had wrapped and tacked it on. Voila....a masterpiece!
For me to accept the divergence of realism between the movie and the last scene, I see it as Red's imagination about what's waiting him on the other side... A hope image from Red head.
They chose wisely
Funny enough that's exactly how the novella ends. It's ambiguous. Red sets off to join Andy, but we never get to find out if he made it past the border. The likely scenario irl that he won't.
that sounds like a perfect ending. the writing should never be swayed by what 'the audience' wants.
Another interesting thing to add to this - the studio, Castle Rock, actually came up with the scene on the beach. Even the studio was creatively on point for this movie.

It was sad.. I once saw a interview with mirko crocop, a crazy mma fighter that retired a couple years ago.. But when he retired did a interview where he mentioned the Brooks scene from shawshank, it totally makes sense when u done something your whole life.
I'm seen this movie, easily at least 20 times (it came on tv all the time! but i'm not mad at it) and idc what he did to get in prison or if he's guilty or innocent- his death is just heart breaking.

@@brightize2651 i understand that. I was saying that to emphasis how much his death affected me and how it put into perspective that there are 2 sides. Bc saying that was the case, i'd be thinking about my loss and wanting him to suffer. Seeing his life in prison, having friends and such might make it seem like he wasn't, but then seeing how he was alone and had trouble trying to live on the outside made me see that he did too. It made me understand how people can forgive someone who wronged them and be able to move on from something like that.
Take a Stephen King short story, put it in the right hands and you have a cinematic masterpiece

That scene where Andy's cell is tossed is actually a lot more suspenseful on a rewatch, as you see how close Norton came to discovering the tunnel, and then taking the Bible with the rock hammer inside.
And then handing him back the Bible. "Salvation lies within."

The warden is one of the rare suicides that doesn't jar or emotionally disturb people, but rather satisfies people. Seeing one less evil person in the world tends to bring a smile on one's face!

"Stand By Me" is another movie based on a Steven King novella that's not horror. Highly recommended. You might have a hard time holding back a few tears.

A beautiful movie about hope. Never fails to make me shed a tear.
A few things I think most people don't realize about Brooks:
1. He was born a few years after the telephone was made available to the public.
2. The first passenger airplane took flight almost a decade after he was put in behind bars.
3. He was sent to prison before the Model T Ford was put in to production.
He really missed several major world history event including, but not limited to, both world wars and the Korean War.
That's the thing, he's so far behind modern society and being thrown into blindly is not only overwhelming but also terrifying when you have no one out there to show you the ropes; it's sad that he felt so disconnected he had to take his life.

i walked into a cinema in Wollongong in Australia in 1994, looking for something to watch on a day off by myself. I had no idea what a cinematic joy was before me.
I remember being so welled up with emotion by the end, i was in shock and awe. So glad i had that experience in the cinema.
I remember exactly where I was the first time I watched it, too. I can’t say that about many movies I’ve seen.
Sad part is in the States it did terrible in theaters, but was a success on vhs.
This is more than a movie. It's an experience. Period. It's a PERFECT film.

You can only catch this on the second time you watch this movie... Or maybe even later... (Unless you read the reference in comments or somebody tells you of course)... I think very few people noticed this at first watch.
It's a movie you will have to see many times, and will want to see it many times... :)

The photo in Red's parole record is of Morgan Freeman's son, the same prisoner who's "reeling 'em in" when Andy gets to Shawshank.
That "Get busy living, or get busy dyin" quote hands down is the best quote i live by to this day. There's so much meaning to it.

Back to back life conviction: Life sentences can sometimes be paroled. In case he gets paroled on one of them, then he still has to serve the second one. He has to be paroled twice. Its to make extra sure he dies there.

It means once he dies and gets reincarnated that guy is serving a life sentence too
This movie really opened my eyes when i was younger. I always thought only guilty or bad people went to prison and it was something they deserved, so lock them away and throw away the key. After i saw this movie i came to the realization that they are still PEOPLE and should be treated as such. Not to mention that they aren't all guilty and some people should be given a second chance. Such obvious concepts, but i feel a lot of us are brought up with such a naive concept of the prison system we tend to lose empathy and humanity for people we deem as "bad". Watching shawshank redemption honestly helped me to become a better person.
It's so hard to believe that this movie was a near-flop in the theaters. It's when it got to videos and people started renting it that it actually took off and people discovered what a masterpiece this is
The warden handing the Bible back after they tossed Andy’s cell- “Salvation lies within.” Perfection
The warden handing back the Bible to Andy and says "salvation lies within".... And that's where the rock hammer was. Such a subtle interaction that was so amazing when the reveal comes
In exodus which is also just brilliant.
Andy didn’t actually plan the escape all along. He really only got the rock hammer so he could chisel rocks. When it shows the flashback to his first night after getting it, he tries to carve his initials into the wall and a larger chunk falls out than he expected. That’s when he got the idea. He realized the concrete was weaker there because the water pump systems were on the other side of his particular cell. If he had been placed in a different cell, he’d have never gotten out, but he would have still ordered the rock hammer for his original purpose.
Andy only did one stupid thing in this whole movie: he told the warden about what Tommy told him. He should have known what the warden’s answer would be. I would have sent correspondence to that other prison to make sure that guy was still there, then wrote to my lawyers about what is found and had them start an investigation. But never mind that for a moment; suppose the warden HAD tried to help Andy and they succeeded in getting his sentence overturned? How is Andy going to explain the big hole behind his poster? They’d give him a new sentence for trying to escape incarceration and he’d be spending some more years there. Innocence doesn’t mean anything to the authorities if you try to escape while serving time, unfortunately.
First of all I agree with what you said to begin with about the rock hammer. As for going to the warden he did what any man would have done. And if he proved his innocence I wouldn't imagine trying to escape would be that severe. I've seen movies where men & woman have escaped then proved their innocence after they have escaped but been allowed to go free without any repercussions. Lastly many people get confused with how long Andy was digging the tunnel for. He served 19 years but was in prison two years before he got the rock hammer so took me 17 years or less
Fun bit of trivia.. the “younger” picture of Red that appears on his parole request paperwork is actually a photo of Freeman’s son. That son also appears in a cameo at the beginning when Andy arrives saying “Fresh fish! I’m reeling’ em in”.

Stephen King is a MASTER in writing character driven stories. His dialogue writing is outstanding, and he creates really engaging story lines. I'm not much of a horror fan, but I love Stephen King.
I cry every time I see the brooks scene .Brooks was locked up for so long he was institutionalized.to say I appreciate Chris for not telling you any spoilers. Continue to share other movies with him.

Everyone needs to see this film twice so they can appreciate things like the warden holding Andy's bible (and the rock hammer inside it) when his cell is tossed...
this has been my favorite movie for at least 20 years. i have no idea how many first-time reactions of it i've watched on youtube, but every time one comes across my recommendations, i watch it. so thank you guys for being part of that :)
I love how the camera pans out just before Andy and Red finally embrace each other after so long.
It's almost like that special moment between them was something those two characters earned to be a thing enjoyed for them, and them alone.

I'm more of a fan when reactors haven't watched a film to get their genuine reaction but since there's 2 of you, if 1 of you hasn't seen a movie then that's still cool to watch!
Serious question here, do you think most of these reactors are serious first timers or do you think they’re faking it? Not trying to point the fingers at our boys here on the channel but it just seems so weird how many of these first time reactors one after the other claim to have never seen the same movies. I know there’s no way to prove anyone could be lying when they say they have never seen “insert movie here” but pick any generally popular movie the masses already know about and suddenly all the first timers are reacting to it.
@@heyitsmemg7494 I've come across so many channels where the reactions seem a slight bit over the top or too suspect & they'll somehow have a bunch of trivia about the movie yet claim they've never seen it so its hard to tell at times. Angel Lopez It’s not that hard to look up Wikipedia on the film for some background. It just took me three clicks to find Shawshank Redemption’s wiki page, with all the information about movie gross, who did the screenplay, soundtrack, interesting happenings on set, critical reception etc.
I often look up background in movies I’ve never seen before. And I know it drives my family crazy when I’ll start giving a bunch of information about some movie they’ve brought up & they’ll say “Oh, so you’ve seen it?”
and I’ll say “No.” 😆

Movies are a huge part of my life & still continue to be & I'm the type of person that tries to go into a movie as blind as possible so at times it strikes me as odd when a reactor knows so much about the movie without having watched it. At the end of the day, as long as the reaction is genuine then I'm a fan of the channel

The Brooks part by midway in the movie, proofs that quality means more than quantity... For the few minutes he has on screen, he delivers and transmit more feelings that many other movie characters that spents more time on screen, and nobody guives a fuck when they die... (Sorry for my horrible english, I'm Spanish)

With regards to the ending, even though it´s a bit frustrating, I kind of love how the camera pans away as Red and Andy meet and hug, to the point that you can barely see them. It´s almost like they deserve a little private moment to themselves. So respectful.

To me the last scene is not "real" (it doesn't fit real anyway compared to the rest of the movie "hyper realistic"). It's oneiric.
You just saw Red taking the bus, and then you jump into his "hope", to me, this is how Red think about what is waiting him on the other side. And it makes sense that the last scene would be a last envision of hope.

Very few movies can make your eyes water after the 103rd time seeing it. This one gets me every time. Never thought Two men hugging on a beach would make me cry.

I agree 100% that Stephen King is known for his horror movies, but then you watch this stuff and his other amazing work like "Stand By Me" and realize he's just a genius at writing characters and story. Gripping plots and deep, relatable characters that suck you in like a black hole!
This movie was filmed partly at the Mansfield Reformatory in Mansfield, Ohio, and you can take guided tours or solo tours, and you can see some of the areas of the prison where some of the scenes were filmed. This place is also haunted!! I went there once for their annual Halloween Haunted House, and you go through various areas of the prison, in the dark, with ghosts, zombies, and all kinds of monsters lurking around every corner, hehe!! This is one of my favorite films too, and I'm happy that you decided to do a review for us. Rock on!!
I'm from Ohio. I have family members that was actually in it when it was open. They sad it was these long steps u had to go up and people would get killed or seriously hurt there all the time! Most of the people who played n the movie were people from mansfield.
I'm from mansfield. I was downtown one day while they were filming but we had no idea what the movie was going to be yet

This is almost a perfect movie. Such a slow burn, where every set-up has a very satisfying pay-off.
You guys should keep this up. Keep watching these classics. I started tearing up with you guys. And I've seen this movie like a dozen times. Red and Andy are cinema's best bromance ever.
I read the original book it doesn’t end with a reunion. Instead, we just get the line where Red says he hopes he will see his friend again as the bus leaves. Glad that they added that scene in the movie.
To me the last scene is not real anyway. It's "obvious" it's Red hope of the reunion. It's not real compared to the rest of the movie realism... Too much colors, too lonely, Andy just realizes at the last moment Red is comment from "no where"... We just switch into Red vision of "hope". So how I see it, I think the last scene isn't so much added... It's an illustration of "Red says he HOPES"...
That was the way the movie was suppose to end also but the test audience hated it

I love the scene when he gets the letter from Andy under the tree. The sound of nature is so prevalent. It’s so full of comfort and freedom. It’s almost a foreshadow of what he reads

The location they filmed in was a real-life prison that was set for demolition. In part because conditions were so brutal that it had to be closed. The building is still around today because of tourists coming to see where the movie was filmed.
I, for one, am completely ok with this format.

Stephen King is listed as the king of terror, but for me he is the king of characters. He has the ability to create characters so lifelike that the stories he does are simply fascinating.
I recommend that you see, if you did not, a movie based on a book by Mr. King called "Apt Pupil"
You are right and it always gives me the hump that people usually have a tone full of insinuation when they say he is a 'horror writer'...like that is lesser or unworthy somehow.
Carrie, Cujo, Pet Semetary, Misery, Christine, Dolores Claiborne are all fantastic.
As for the geezer in the hats comment "Screw horror! Do more of this!"... Mate, you're chatting shit. Just because his usual output is far darker, it is not automatically devoid of intriguing characters, beautiful dialogue and moments of poignancy that can reduce you to tears.
This is my favorite movie ever. Two other great movies are Sling Blade (Billy Bob Thornton) and The Fisher King (Jeff Bridges & Robin Williams). Thanks for reacting to Shawshank.

When Red tells Andy hope is "shitty pipe dreams." it foreshadows Andy crawling through a shitty pipe to escape.
The director Frank Darabont & every actor in this film knocks it out of the park. One of those times when all the elements of a film come together perfectly. Defo need to check out The Green Mile and The Mist by the same director from Stephen King stories!

Whenever this movie is on TV and I happen to catch it while channel-surfing, I stay with it until the end. That's why while I have seen the start of this movie a few dozen times, I have seen the ending a few hundred times!
Sorry for previous comment. This was the best reaction yet I've seen. Having the "Dude" remain quiet, made it work. You saved the reaction to the end. I didn't think Curtis would lose it, Shawshank blows everyone away!
Studio interference is horrible, but Shawshank is one of the rare exceptions. The studio said they have to meet up again at the end. The ending makes it. Two heroes meeting up and sharing that moment at the end makes it best payoff.

Love how you immerse yourself into the movies, you’re crying now you wait till you have kids, you’ll be crying at everything at the blink of an eye. Great film choices.
One of my favorite things about this movie is that no scene or dialogue is wasted/unnecessary to the plot. It’s like every word matters significantly. It took me rewatching to catch the Warden telling him in the beginning that “salvation lies within”. Scenes that tie back to earlier scenes are always great and rewarding when you’ve paid close attention

Great reaction! " Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies!" I believe that is the essence of the story. There is power in hope and death in Hopelessness.
The original ending was just supposed to be Red getting on the bus headed to Mexico. The meeting on the beach was tacked on at the last moment because the studio wanted a clear and "happy" ending.
That's the way the book ends. They filmed the beach reunion scene because test audiences HATED that ending, so they went back and filmed it. Good move. So it wasn't the studio that really wanted the happy ending, it was the people.

The short story is so well written which made the transition to film so easy. Worth the read. Another great, genuine reaction. I don’t know why I enjoy this so much, when others love movies that I have loved for years. It’s a strange satisfaction. Keep up the good work.

Still a movie that holds up so, so well - even on rewatch. Love the characters, the growth, the few curve balls, the final redemption.

Not a similar movie, though it is based on a Stephen King novel (and for video game fans, the novel inspired Half Life 1) and even has one of the actors from this movie, a horror movie I really enjoyed was The Mist (with Thomas Jane).
The movie doesn't, well at least to me, feel like a Stephen King horror movie like IT

That is a perfect way of describing this film. @ 39:10 The hammer certainly helped, but it was that old, soften stone wall that really made it possible when he easily and quietly broke out a big chunk of it just before he asked for the poster. Noticed you guys haven't done "Interstellar" yet. I'm certain you will like it as much as this one. And "Avatar" too. Both are some of the best science fiction movies made. ✌️😎
