  • Fake fashion has become big business. From Gucci to Balenciaga to sports gear and handbags, replica designer brands are everywhere. Social media platforms promote the look and facilitate the sales and if you don’t have a fake, chances are you’ll know someone who does. But most people have no idea who is behind it. International crime syndicates have established themselves in Manchester, making it the counterfeit capital of the UK with their goods flooding across Europe. Their enterprises are implicated in everything from copyright infringement to human trafficking, money laundering and even terrorism.
    Foreign Correspondent returns with an investigation into the fake fashion business by reporter Naomi Selvaratnam. Naomi’s story takes us inside the shadowy world of the counterfeit industry. With exclusive access to one of Europe’s specialist police taskforces working to stamp out the trade, she traces the money trail and reveals the organised criminal networks running these global chains. Naomi has also gained access to world leading authenticators to see how they spot the fakes. And there’s some tips for those viewers who may want to double check their purchases.

      People don’y buy them for the quality because in most cases you can find better quality for less. It’s an aspirational thing where people with money like to say they can spend that sort of money no problem. For some they also like the luxury shopping experience you get from the stores.

      @@tonshmar I vaguely remember reading an article years ago about how the workers at the factories in places like China make the "real" goods during one shift, usually day time, and then come back to the factory after closing hours and just make more of it "off the record" and sell that themselves. Same factory line, same materials, same label. They're apparently able to do this because the factory managers and guards can be easily bribed, or are sometimes even in on it. No idea if that was ever true or if it still happens. But it was a real article in a reputable magazine, so could be the case?

    Raids like this take place all over the world. The real tragedy is that all the sized items are destroyed or incinerated. You would think they can just removed the copyrighted labels/logo and donate/repurpose them to prevent pollution and wasting of resources. But I do recall that even the "authentic" labels would burn millions of dollars of unsold merchandise on a regular basis rather then discounting them to "preserve" their prestige name. Burberry was one of them!

    • @kokoromarudi7717
      @kokoromarudi7717 Před 3 měsíci +1

      The reason is seized items are illegal and pose health regulation risks. Anything you do with them is breaking the law, and nobody seriously wants them except for the fake designer bag lovers. Regarding the wasting of resources, what do you think the people making these fakes would do to the unsold bags? Do you think they comply with environmental laws when they produce the fakes?

    • @sharinglungs3226
      @sharinglungs3226 Před 2 měsíci +3

      Well if people stopped buying fakes then there would be none of this waste of resources. I do think it’s terrible some brands destroy products but I suppose it’s too costly to store. • @ComanderCool909
      @ComanderCool909 Před 3 měsíci +9

      They should, but they NEVER would. The police see themselves as nothing more than enforcement of the law. They don't care about homeless unless they're breaking the law. And they aren't going to expend the effort to locate a charity to manage it for them. On top of that, theres absolutely no way LVMH or others would allow anything similar to any of their brands to be distributed, if its fake they want it destroyed so the shitty quality doesnt reflect poorly on them, and sales of fakes don't eat into their profits; And if its real they want it destroyed so people dont get it free and lower the value. (in fact they do this themselves every year, either shredding or burning massive amounts of last seasons Ready-to-wear products, so that it cant end up on clearance racks or discounted anywhere, ever)
      Edit to add: this entire issue could be solved if luxury companies used RFID tags. If my supermarket can afford RFID to stop people stealing a steak, chanel can afford to put one in a several thousand dollar coat.
      To add to that: Im not encouraging anyone to buy luxury, its a rip off and its not luxury at all. Luxury brands ready to wear collections exist to fund the haute couture houses so that the filthy rich can have the actually luxury clothes hand made for them, at the same time advertising them back to you.
      If you want luxury, buy hand made tailored unbranded clothes, they'll fit, theyre better materials, they dont make you a billboard and if you buy the staples they never go out of fashion, thank me later.

What are the homeless supposed to do with this stuff? Are you suggesting the government to break its own law or encourage homeless people to break the law by selling this crap to make money?
      It's called luxury for a reason. Most people don't give a sh** about these designer brands, and nobody cares about what a nobody wears, so no need to worry about being a walking billboard without pay.
      People can spend their money on things that don't make sense to you, just as you probably spend on hobbies and things that others might not care for.

    I’m a designer for a major fashion brand and can tell you that we are not nearly as bothered by fake products as the police are because of the side effects that comes with the production and distribution of these fake products. Don’t get me wrong it hurts when you see something you designed show up on the fake market days or sometimes even hours after it’s official release, but we move onto the design of the next product quick, but the fake product will continue to fund criminal activities long after the fact. Personally I couldn’t care less if someone decide to wear fake products, no matter how good they are you will always know that it’s not real and if that don’t bother you then by any means carry on, there will always be enough people discerning enough for the real merchandise.

    these companies should produce luxury products half the time to sell to rich people and the other half to give away free to poor folks, luxury goods are a human right, not just something rich people get to enjoy. I'm not talking diamonds, poor people can survive without real diamonds, but beautiful suede boots, cashmere sweaters, silk blouses, Egyptian cotton pillow cases and sheets, caviar and truffles should be given away free to poor people, they suffer enough as it is so with luxury goods at least they have something to look forward too.

    Ridiculous prices for products which can often be produced for pennies on the pound. Of course crime groups are going to copy the patterns and give them to people who appreciate the design but not the prices. Sometimes the products sold on the 'Black Markets' are made in the same factories by the same workers but are then just sold through unauthorised outlets.
