I have never been a Democrat. I used to be a Republican, but it was nonsense like this that drove me away from the party. I’m now with the Reform Party.
A question:
How many times over the past two decades have you suggested that US defense funds were being wasted and should have been applied to domestic welfare programs instead?
I am betting that this is the first time. That is something that Democrats commonly say, but Republicans do not.
So when Congress decided to enact a costly premature termination of the F-22 program so that it could focus on the F-35, you had no problem with that. When the F-35 ended up costing more than the entire war in Iraq (largely due to corruption and political engineering), we heard not a peep from you. You have no problem with the fact that we spend more on defense than the next twenty countries combined spend on defense. That’s all fine and good, because we need to keep the evil powers of the world in check.
But when we start sending resources so that an ally can fight against an antagonistic invading power that is essentially the #1 military threat that we face in the world, you suddenly care about poor people in our streets, and you think we should help them instead of spending money to fight against evil conquerors.
From a purely self-serving and cynical perspective, any money that we spend helping Ukraine is money well spent, in that it weakens our biggest military rival much more than we would weaken them by spending ten times as much on domestic military preparations.
From an objective and altruistic perspective, Russia has shown itself to be not only a country that intervenes militarily in the affairs of other countries (as we do), but as an expansionist aggressor that, even in the 21st Century, follows a doctrine of invade-and-annex. That being the case, we have a moral obligation to oppose Russia. Peaceful countries have militaries specifically for the purpose of opposing this kind of thing.
Of all expenditures related to defense that have been made over the past twenty years, the resources being sent to Ukraine are toward the top in terms of importance and effectiveness.
As someone who is still very much a conservative, it pains me to see just how much the Republican Party has abandoned all pretense of following its actual ideology. Whenever I see someone in the US arguing against support of Ukraine, it is always a Republican, and I find that very disconcerting, because according to stated principles of the Republican Party, we have every reason to send this and more to Ukraine to help them. Yet Republicans continue with this nonsense. This is yet another example of the gradual self-destruction of American political conservatism.

As a final note, I do recognize that many Republicans do support Ukraine and agree with what I have said here. But whenever I hear this anti-Ukraine rhetoric from an American, that person is always a Republican.

It's far than Ukranians "way of life" that's at stake. It's their right to live at all. Russians want them ALL dead except those willing to be slaves to a Russian fascist dictator. They want their country wiped off the map too. If Putin is allowed to succeed the implications for Europe and the world will be horrific.
The only way to handle a bully is to stand up to them, and push back a whole lot harder than they expect. Bullies don't like getting bloody noses, it scares them away.
