Great video, Lyn. I’m starting to notice on a few of the cacti I brought in from the greenhouse to protect from that second freeze we had are starting to etiolate a little, may have to start putting some back in the greenhouse sooner than I wanted. Or I need more grow lights haha. Thank you for sharing with us as always, Lyn. Have a lovely evening from Edith & myself to you and Hans ❤️🌵☀️🌼🌺🌸🏜

haha with the grow lights Daz :-D I always struggle at this time of year with the indoor cacti, some of the Cereus especially the Pilosocereus are starting to grow from the tips in the grow room even though they are all still bone dry and no water given to them from sept, and I know they will start to stretch if I can't get them out into the yard soon, I can' wait to get moving plants back into the polytunnel and yard again haha, thanks so much Daz for your wonderful Friendship and fantastic comment and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you and beautiful Edith lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to England and Singapore for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

Those domino cactus, echinopsis are so durable! I use mine for an entire football game using it for the football and then put it back in the soil and 3 days later it looks fine again!!! LOL! Does well on the window, or under the couch, or on any book shelf anywhere, just make sure it gets 3 hours of sun a week and it will grow and flower with no hassles. Mine is 10 years old and has been through everything! Looks great still... if anyone wants the indestructible cactus the echinopsis domino cactus is it!!!! Love the video! We finally got some cactus in some pots!!! we just re-potted our Lophophora and put it in one of of our own pots, then we put a "Landfill" tip in another pottery cup we already had... We will match them better as we go! Thanks for the video! Peace love and Hendrix!

Thank you so much for such an informative video, Lyn 😊 A great idea to show the plants and flowers 😊 I kept the blinds open
throughout winter, the polly lounge stayed roughly between 53/68 f humidity 60/66. Some casualties due to late watering or lack of. Lesson learnt 😢 I'm hoping my winter conditions produce flowers 😊
I'm sending both yourself and Hans peace, love, and a budding good spring and summer 🎉😊

  • @brittascharmsandbeads9057

This video was PERFECT for me today ! 🤗
The first Astrophytum that you show , the four-ribbed one, is exactly like one I purchased on my trip on Thursday ! In books I have not seen four-ribbed Astrophytums, so I thought this had to be another genus, but with seeing yours, and looking at photos online, I was able to find the full name : Astrophytum myriostigma quadricostatum ! 🤗 And while looking, I also identified this one : Astrophytum myriostigma var nudum ! 🤗
I bought all together 15 cacti and succulents on Thursday... 😱🙃😁 Most were minis, though, for them there was a better price when buying many, so I could not resist... 😉
A lot of identifying left... 🤔 So frustrating that only big & expensive plants are properly named ! 😢
I was hoping to find Rebutias, but (probably) didn't... Is there a way to tell if a small round no-id cactus is a Mammilliara or a Rebutia ? If so, maybe you could tell us in a video... 😉
Ps. Thumbnail photo for this video is so cute ! 💕🌵💕 And thanks for having written names of cacti in the video, and all the inserted photos. - Must have been a lot of work ! 💕🌵💕

    • @desertplantsofavalon
      @desertplantsofavalon  Před rokem +1

YAY so happy that this video was perfect timing Brit :-D and thats fantastic that you have bought the Astrophytum myriostigma quadricostatum, its such a stunning cactus and has the most awesome of shapes and no spines which is a bonus too haha, and thats incredible you bought 15 cacti and succulents on your shopping trip vacation haha, a lot of the small young Mammillarias and Rebutias can be a bit similar in appearance to ID until they flower, Mammillarias will have the ring of blooms and Rebutia flowers are larger with flowers all over their bodies, you could check out Cacti Guide .com online as they have agood selection of Rebuti and Mammillaria photos on there that may help a bit with the ID, so happy you loved the Thumbnail haha, I couldn't resist adding in the cartoon lady and man cactus haha, thanks so much Brit for your wonderful comment and all your support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

Beautiful montage of the blooms, but most of all: thanks for a great informative video for people who don't have a greenhouse (like me: I make do with my windows and balcony, and an additional growlight). This was a really good idea for a video, and I'll refer back to the specific species when I ever have some free space on one of my windowsills 😆I'm sure you've seen that there was a segment on cactus growing in this week's Gardeners' World and I would so hope to see you and Hans there at some point! You've got so much to show, and decades of experience of growing such a variety of interesting desert plants in this climate zone. If I ever run into Monty Don (not going to happen), I promise you I'll bring up the subject!😅 Lots of good vibes to you and your plants at this start of Spring! Nathalie

I didn't know what to expect. They finally arrived. They had a heat pack in the box. They were 6 healthy succulents however they were tiny. Six little squirts. I am extremely happy with them all. hi Lyn, I agree with everything except lophophora 😅 mine's been sooooo difficult to find, it's very small and slooooow to grow (I'm in Croatia, Europe). I think mammillaria is the easiest genus, but I LOVE gymnocalyciums, there's so many different varieties and I enjoy them very much. Rebutias have been easier for me than sulcorebutias, sulcorebutia seem to etiolate a lot if not given the proper sun (I had three sulcorebutia rauschii violet stretch out, and I have a good amount of direct sunlight on my windowsills). I love seeing your cactus greenhouse. I hope to have a similar one one day...🤩

I have gymnocalycium. It bloomed for me last summer 😊 I'm still learning about cactus plants. I had to give many plants away due to health issues. I have a upstairs and it is painful to climb. I'm hoping for a smaller place surrounded by plants 😄 I watched one of your older videos of the trichocereus pachanoi. It was about 8 years ago in bloom it was so beautiful!!!!

Thats wonderful you had your Gymnocalycium blooming for you last year, they are gorgeous bloomers, but so sorry to hear that you had to give plants away due to health issues, I hope you can get a smaller place without stairs, so happy you loved the Trichocereus pachanoi bloom, the bloom was absolutely gorgeous and with a really amazing scent too, it hasn't bloomed as well since, as the past few years it keeps dropping any buds that grow before the buds open up, but I really hope to see the awesome blooms again this year, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Some great choices, Lyn. I'm noticing astrophytums ( particularly myriostigma) becoming increasingly common in garden centres which didn't previously stock cacti. Great to see!

Thanks so much :-D yes I have noticed that the garden centres are selling more myriostigma now too, they used to be very hard to find, they are such a fantastic cactus to grow and I find them one of the easiest of the Astrophytums to bloom, thanks so much for your fantastic comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Sunday XXXX

I've been looking for Astrophytum asterias which I see online that some places in the western US states sell them like California, Arizona. But I live in Maryland, which is on the east coast. I'd love to just order one, but I am not sure it would do well being shipped that long. But I'm told they are not commonly found in the eastern states, possibly for that reason. Maybe one day if I can get to travel to California or something. :)

@@Plantsandtoyhorses Astrophytum asterias can be so hard to find, strangely enough the asterias is the only Astrophytum that I can't seem to grow for long, they seem to die on me after a few years LOL! all the other Astros thrive for me but I struggle with the asterias, which is a shame as its one of my favourites XXXX
