New Wind Powered Land Speed World Record - 225.58km/h

- Emirates Team New Zealand and Glenn Ashby’s World Record Run of 222.43km/h in Horonuku was widely celebrated when achieved on December the 11th 2022, breaking the previous record of 202.9km/h by Richard Jenkins which had been unbroken for over 13 years. But, as revealed in ‘Land of Speed’ the documentary covering the Emirates Team New Zealand land speed campaign, the new world record was relatively short lived as Pilot Glenn Ashby explains of the opportunistic window presented to the team. “In February we were really coming back to the lake pack up the craft. We had to get Horonuku and the containers back to New Zealand. But a few days out, Clouds our Meteorologist indicated there was a possible weather opportunity, so we rattled our daggs and got to the lake.”

225 kmh from 23 knots of wind…… holy shut broo, bloody awesome 👍👍👍👍👍
Epic achievement, well done the whole team!
Incredible piece of engineering. Great driving by Glen, hanging it out!
As much as I appreciate the amazing achievement, are we going to get a proper full video on all the engineering and the story of the project? Am I the only one who is fascinated by how you achieved this?
Yeah the record is only the end, let us see the beginning!
👍i hope so too👍cheers m8
yes please, how the f. is this working and what is the theoretically max speed without beeing blown away?
yes yes you only one
Have you looked at their video channel?
Congratulations!!! Love your teams pushing to the ragged squirrelly edge of control ability as safely as you can 💚🏆
Love it! We're producing a SciFi comic book in which land sailing is used extensively!
Sailing is awesome. It's crazy that wind going *43 km/h* can push a vehicle to *226 km/h.* I'd love to see another video explaining the physics plus the design and material decisions that went into building the vehicle.
Veritasium has a pretty good video detailing how a craft can go 4 times the speed of the wind. Long story short it’s a feedback loop
Over 10 times faster than the wind! The skilled driver had his hands full. What an incredible achievement:)
The video had a confusing mix of units for speed. The wind speed was *43 km/h* and the vehicle speed was *226 km/h,* so the vehicle was actually traveling a little over *5 times faster* than the wind. I wish content creators were more consistent with their units (after all, they are professional communicators).
It is disappointing that data is not respected
Still, you have poetry in motion.
Ok. This was unexpected. Thanks Algo. They MUST have done some documentary about how to make those wind kite cars right? because this looks BLOODY AWESOME.
Well done Glenn & team, congrats! Great video.
Well done, man!
You have taken crazy to a whole 'nother level. Very, very impressive.
Seeing it for the first time and a plane flying on its side. Amazing!
Back in 1984 I was working on the Marsden Point maintenance shut down. An older guy on our crew was a Whangerei local who was working on a sail 'wing'. During smoko breaks we spoke of its potential and design although he did keep a bit under his hat.
He was the subject of some ridicule by his maritime fraternity and others. Still he persevered.
And here we are now, sailing on a wing that is faaast and seemingly unsurpassed at this time.
I have wondered if his foresight was the seed for what we see here and on the water?
Awesome achievement guys for all the innovation and belief in could be done and what you actually achieved.
Way to go 💪
Strewth ... flying Kiwis!! Well done Team.
I am impressed by the design, I was expecting a sail or something like that.
Absolutely outstanding! Keeping it on the ground rather than airborne must be a challenge.
This touches on a subject I wish I understood more - sailing and wind propulsion.
Well done guys 💨Congratulations🤝KIWIS PROUD❤
would luv to see doco on building, anything behind the scenes would be so fantastic.
225km in a 23km wind. Such an accomplishment.
Would love to know if the data was captured establishing the downwind VMG.
23 knots, so 42km of wind. :)
Knots. You can see the breeze strength in the way the salt is blowing around etc. about 42kmh. So over a 5:1 ratio, I am amazed.
Yup, and they saved that bit for the small print!
Thats something to lead with.
@@EmiratesTeamNZ There were three different speed units in the video. It would help more effectively convey the importance of the achievement if the video *consistently used just km/h.*
They mixed up the units badly. The record in km/h, the wind in kn.
Great stuff!
I'm a bit surprised to see only one outrigger though! Two would be more stable (although there'd be a bit more drag) so you could *really* "put the hammer down" without fear of tipping over.
Anyway, they must have crunched the numbers so they'd have it all worked out.
That’s like a London taxi cab. An ugly design for not existing hats.
You're "sailing" at an angle to the wind, so it's only pushing you in one direction.
SO wicked! Nice one lads - go for more!! 🤙🇳🇿
Congratulations team new Zealand 👍 it was great to be there
Congratulations Glennie and the Team..Love it
Wow! 140 mph in 23 knots of wind is insane. I wonder what the difference would be if it was on ice?
A bicycle with a sail that goes faster than my car. Holy crap.
Well done guys.. incredible job!
3:03 is that the "YES!" Hockey Baby gif kid, but now as a slightly older kid?
Madness. Good on you all.
Well done! Thank you for pushing the limits!
I just know this vehicle exist, incredible!
Wow, sketchy or what. Fabulous quality of work.
Sweet deal, amazing 10:1 speed vs. wind speed‼️‼️‼️🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥⛅️
Well done team, great achievement that mark will be hard to break.
I agree a great achievement ... maybe a fly-by-wire system to minimise the pilot inputs ?
BUT ... what has this exercise taught ETNZ about sailing an AC boat ?
definitely deserves a comment
Well done Lads !
It looked sketchy AF though ! 😲
LET'S GO TEAM WELL DONE 👏
awesome .... great job ...congrats to everyone !
Congrats Guys
Awesome boys💪 be safe
i'm tipping you drove this record run at _South Australia's Lake Gairdner_ again (like your other records), yes?
I 1st saw Akira at a party in the early 90s It was on in one room and no one was watching it until I wandered in. Gobsmacked! Mind-blown! ❤
I have a feeling they will never break the sound barrier 🙂
Well done!
Awesome guys love it!
@ what's the wind speed when reached 222.43km/h?
Kiwis going fast
He'll yeah!!!
I was watching yalls documentary and went private in the middle 😢
Awesome!
So many flies
huge congrats Team NZ , have to ask can you get another 10 on the Bonneville flats , that aussie stuff looks awfull !? , [ I suspect Glens truely hooked on that buzz , mate !, hanging it out there ]
❤ ETNZ ⛳
Does veritasium know about this ?
Amazing!
Would someone mind explaining what function the smaller vertical sail, wing, perform?
Trimming the angle of the main wing.
@@EmiratesTeamNZ Thanks Team!
@@BlueMoonday19 You can imagine such a vehicle like a sailplane oriented vertically. So you have the main sail/wing, and the tailplane orienting it relative to the oncoming wind.
Amazing Now for the cup.
What cup?
Epic
225.58 km
23knots is 42km, how do you travel at 225km/h with wind speed of 42km/h?
Yup!!! Kiwis do fly, on land & water. Tu meke. !!!
Shit, you friggin Kiwi's are utterly amazing.
Awesome! Where is this salt flat? Utah?
ozzie
Three letters... WOW
Great job of technology. I assume that is top GPS speed and not speed over a measured mile. I've sailed an ice boat and know how quickly the apparent wind will move forward. In your case keeping the wing from stalling. An iceboat in 1938 holds the speed record of 230.136 kpm. Obviously the friction of the land vehicle's three wheels on the ground is much greater than an iceboat. Y'all are dragging three wheels, with one on the outrigger being pressed into the ground to counter balance the heel. Is it possible to design a counter weight system on an upwind outrigger [with a wheel until the boat heels up] that moves outward to counter balance the heel, thus eliminating the outriggers wheels friction.
The outrigher wheel is on the upwind side
If you watch it on some of their runs it is flying off the ground
@@veggyking3024. I noticed that. It blows my mind that he is able to keep from capsizing. Would be catastrophic at 140 mph.
How do you set a Kiwi up in a small business? You give him a big business to run.
140mph.
Where is this? It looks like Australia.
Thanks to all in the team. A truly great achievement making NZ proud. What can we do for Ukraine ? drones or long range missiles perhaps :)
Thanks for printing the MPH. I get tired of reaching for my calculate and multiplying by .62 to see how fast it really goes. Can your chase car keep up at 140 MPH?
So now we know that their boat is heavily sandbagged....
140.168 MPH
138.21 mph
Record set on Australian soil so technically it's an Aussie record, not for the Kiwis.
Aussie is the West island of NZ !
Let's be realistic it was set on salt, technicality!
That's not how this works.
creepy
Rasing? 🤨
🎉👍👏👏
140+ mph in a 26.5 mph breeze!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
CRAPPY background muzak ruins this vid.
Too bad - can't hear the vehicle, the wind, and sometimes the vocals are hard to make out.
C'mon, salty sandbagging's not in fashion anymore ;)
though i enjoyed the video, it is a SHAME to see you guys wearing Emirates shirts known for modern day slavery. If you don't believe this, go there yourself and see how they treat their immigrant Work Force. SHAME ON YOU.
140 miles per hour.
25fps is an ancient framerate from the early 20th century.
You gravely insult your viewers by failing to shoot and upload at 1080p60.
I came to be amazed by the achievement, not the effing cinematography. Stop whinging.

= 139 mph in real numbers
You mean archaic freedumb units.
what is 225.58 km in English?
If you are running windows you probably have a calculator program. It also has a conversion function. Or you can google it. HTH.
225580 metres.
Two hundred and twenty five point five eight kilometers
2467 football fields [US]
About 140 MILES per hour 😁
Is it wrong for me to root for failure for this type of thing? I'm being serious. For every achievement these guys make, the clowns in our government will try to make us all have to have "wind powered vehicles" because 7 people with purple hair want it.
Calm down. Nobody is going to make you use a yacht to get to work.
What’s the point? Are we all going to drive wind powered cars? What are you trying to prove?
Only those that risk going to far will really find out how far they can go.
@@gamelord1000 * too far

What's the point? Pretty sure that's what they said about the first mobile phones and Internet. Actually that's pretty much how humanity has managed to achieve so much by doing the pointless.

So, you built a vertical sailplane,,, crap
