I began the Chiller mechanic side of my career 11 years ago on the non union side. I learned very quickly that you just don't become a chiller guy overnight, really if ever at all. Especially non union. I had to fight my way up that ladder every step of the way. Then I had the opportunity to organize into the UA and that's where my career really took off! Ive been all over the country for different training thanx to the UA!!! I now work for a factory shop in the Houston area, where chillers are very plentiful, and I work on them every day. Every word of this video is exactly correct, so if you want this part of the trade, then work hard, don't be afraid of training on your own time, leave your ego at the door, and most of all be patient with yourself, and with the process.

@@anom2789 Well, I started my Union career in Phoenix AZ LU 469 then came to Houston as a Journeyman, however my advice is to go to the Local in Pasadena, and apply. I think you can also apply online. You will need to take a test, and probably do the apprenticeship depending on your skill level and general knowledge. Like I mentioned before, leave your ego at the door, be open to working under a Journeyman for the length of your apprenticeship. Take advantage of any and all training available to you.

I lucked up and got hired on with Trane (non-union) right out of trade school. Worked on unitary equipment and chillers for a little before I was asked if I’d be interested in doing overhauls and quickly accepted. For almost 2 years now I’ve exclusively worked on centrifugals performing annuals and run inspections while doing teardowns. I hit the lotto as a lot of guys work years to get around this type of equipment. Just wanted to say thank you for the content as your videos have drove me to want to be a chiller tech and help me get up to speed on chillers as a whole.

Union member of local 246, the same rules apply for both routes. I’m an apprentice and have been blessed with the opportunity to touch chillers because of my investment in self education. When compared to others that don’t express interest or investment in the chiller industry, when the question comes up of who to bring on as a helper I am the one chosen. My responsibilities started out small but with time they have grown and I expect them to continue growing as I express more and more of what I am learning on my own time. It’s like anything else in life, what you put in is what you get out

A good tip I've learned is if you're brushing tubes make a drain pan set it under the barrel with a hose to running to a drain take breaks from tube brushing to vacuum and clean all the excess water the customers and chiller techs will request you.

Appreciate all that you do! I’ve recommended a lot of your videos to my techs. I’ve been doing commercial HVAC for 30 years at the same company and we work on most manufacturers but rep none. While we offer a lot of opportunity to be hands on for techs that want to work on chillers the problem comes when you need factory support or training. In many cases, unless you do a certain amount in sales, factory training is not an option unless you can call in some favors. It’s definitely something to consider when starting off.

What would you say are the pros and cons to chiller work as opposed to supermarket refrigeration on parallel racks? Do you believe a supermarket tech would have an easier time pivoting from the supermarket side over to the chiller side?

Befriend your dispatcher and don't let them down. They will send you on good calls, if they have confidence in you.
The other way is to take more on-call shifts. When you're the only tech working, you get the frustrating backed up drain line calls, but you also get them chiller calls too, buddy 😎

When you update the "EPROM" chiller york software, you only change the chip, or you have to do more things in the programming.

Would be interested in your take on how to move into the chiller side of work as a company. I work for my dads hvac company and we do commercial but not chillers (I do see chillers at some sites but mostly union companies service the chillers in boston).
I definitely want to work on chillers and get chiller accounts, maybe starting on small air cooled chillers first. But it makes me mad seeing chillers at sites that we dont service.

Just being honest if your a black guy your best chance is to find a union, this field is pretty closed off to us unless we just union up.
