Race Imboden has undergone an interesting evolution in fencing style representing the USA on their men's foil fencing team over the years, having studied under a number of well known coaches since the beginning of his fencing career. These coaches include Jed Dupree, Dan Kellner, Sergei Golubitsky, and Stefano Cerioni. In this video, we can see the gradual change in his fencing style up to the present day.

He's had some amazing coaches influence his style over his career. He started with Jed Dupree, then Dan Kellner, Sergei Golubitsky and now Stefano Cerioni.
Would be very interesting to see what kind of fencer he would produce if he was a coach with all those experiences
@@OlympicFoil I think he'd be a great coach if he ever decides to take that route when he eventually retires (which is definately a long way off).
@@OlympicFoil ya he can teach them to F bomb on the strip like he does constantly, kneel for their countries anthem, and just be a spoiled asshole. great coach and role model for my son. no freaking thank you!
@@calsportsclub do you know why he kneeled during his countries national anthem?
@@xDinomanxyou were wrong regarding his retirement, unfortunately
Some things definitely changed, some things still the same 11 years later
Which year do you like the most?
(personally I find 2018 the most interesting style for watching, but think that in terms of fencing he's at his strongest now in the present day)
2013. After that I feel speed and power were overused at the expense of his good, unique fencing.
2010 it's a bit like my fencing style
@@Spacebreakaarrhh You have a bright fencing future then that's for sure!
He seems to get more upright as the years progress.
yeah i agree
saber fencer here to talk about foil. I can't see a whole lot of differences but to me it seems he sits down more on guard as years have passed. He still has that sort of lefty tendency to keep the back butt cheek higher or hip up sort of thing ( think Yakimenko or maybe Zagunis) but that's all I can see.
mhhh yeah like yakimenko I see it
Can you do this with Gerek Meinhardt? I know he doesn't have the coaching changes Race had but it would still be interesting to see.
Yes! I'm planning to do just that đ Should be out sometime in the next few weeks
@@OlympicFoil Ok thank you!
@@foilfencinghighlights8663 It's out
2018 was probably his prime, it seems his back get straighter with time
yeah he slowly straightens up over the years!
If youâre not paying attention it just looks like theyâre aggressively pointing at each other
lol i've been watching this video thinking of this and it's true
feel like his attacks relies more and more on taking the blade and seeing how his opponent react ( usually waits for his opponent to counter attack) It is very passive and he barely does a lunge. now watching him fence, it feels like he did nothing wrong but just miss a lot. maybe an side effect of relying too much on his point control (i am actually surprised by how much he misses). his style around 2015-6 is more entertaining to watch since he would actively finding timing to finish. This works but is at same time too risky since his body moves forward a lot, and he almost never retreats back even in uncomfortable distance. For defense (which I didn't pay too much attention to since I usually watch him just to see him argue with people xD ) i felt like he used to give up more distance which he doesn't do as much. less going in counter attacks and more stop hits? what are you thoughts? Iâm probably making no sense tbh xD
It makes sense! đHe's definitely been changing big time since cerioni started working with him, over the past few years alone big changes like you described
I do love watching him argue to haha đ great television

Foil fencing's number 1 fan for sure! đȘ
@@OlympicFoil of course :D
About the same imho
Yeah he was a very strong junior, solid foundation
Who is his coach at the moment?
who tf knows, he was with stefano cerioni the past 2 years but now cerioni has been made the italian national coach - will they be allowed/able to continue their coaching arrangement? not clear what's going on
His results, although stable seems to be going downhill?
So unclear cuz of covid, what i'm really looking forward to is the first workd cup of the 2022 season, we can get a look at everyone đ
