- My honest answers as a Fairphone 4 and Fairphone 3 user! Here is what I can say after several years of daily dependence on these devices, as someone who makes videos, watches videos, even sometimes edits stuff on the phone... I can honestly say I don't see myself ever going back from being a Fairphone user. I'm a total fan boy, mic jack or not. This is the best phone I ever had.
However, I am a very low-maintenance user. I don't expect a phone to be a camera or audio recorder. I just use it to take calls, sometimes snapshots, little videos at the rink, sure, in good lighting, and I don't drop it often. I also don't think that phones should cater to people who want a camera substitute that never breaks. That is an idiotic demand. Get a real camera and a refurbished phone. Both together will do just fine, each well at what it was designed for, and you will be way happier than with your childish idea of a camera trapped in a phone case nonsense.

I wish as Android operation system.
What do you mean? It has the newest android, but you can instal graphene, e/os or whatever
@@UndineAlmani I know, starting to selling in United States as e/os. Not as out of the box with the Android operation system.
@zweiwing4435 But e/os is way nicer! Also, not hard to get at all...
@@UndineAlmani Can e/os can install Android apps?
That sound is the physical camera stabilisation. It's the camera rocking back and forth. It's suspended and meant to absorb small shock so the image stays stable. When you shake it to violantly it clacks against the casing.
Yep. my S22 Ultra also makes that noise. Betting every phone with that feature will.
@@lyianx Yep same here, i was really confused first, but when i located the noise, my first thougt was camera stabilisation and i was right. But sometimes even if i hold the phone still i can hear the camera stabilisation its like a high pitched puzzing, but... you can only hear it when you put your ear to the camera so its fine.
A lot of the price people neglect the time factor. You buy those wooden toys, and they'll last you throughout all your kids (I say that as the kid). If the fairphone lasts 5 years with a few replacement parts, it's already given me just as much time per dollar than that 3 year Samsung or 2 year iPhone did, and there's a good chance of getting 6-7 years in.
Yes!!! I still have wooden toys from my childhood and have passed them on. The plastic ones, not so much. And they're beautiful too. My FP is literally the best phone I ever had. I've turned it on and stopped worrying ever since.
I really like your honest and open take. It's so refreshing hearing opinion from someone who is an average user and doesn't get paid by anyone.
Thank you! Appreciate it very much 🤍
Algorithm brought me here after researching the FP5 as well.
A minor comment on the price, even for people who don't care about fair supply chain wages or don't trust the manufacturer, that's still very good value considering it has a long software support and the modules can be replaced easily without expensive work. I was actually sold on this front before I even read up about the factores and recycling stuff.
True. I must admit though, that in the FP3 the bottom module is buggy and currently sold out. So I am not sure if people should buy spare parts in advance, I am certainly thinking about it, but on the other hand, for 2 years, I had no problems and my husband just broke his lol... so maybe it's not the phone's fault. Anyway, the spare parts can be hard to come by or can come with waiting several weeks. Other than that, this phone has so much space, it basically never runs out. The only thing I don't like about the FP4 is the eSIM, I just dislike the trouble of having to go through people to get something (but I guess it's whining on a higher level).
@@UndineAlmani bit of a presonal tangent, I'm from Ukraine and at the beginning of the invasion I started using the phone heavily since I've been a free taxi. The charging port didn't like this constant use and broke while the official service for the brand was in occupied territory. This way the phone while completely fine otherwise became a brick, it's still lying around waiting for better times when I can fix it and I had to buy another which pains me greatly. If I had an option just to order the part and do it myself even if that meant waiting for a week, I'd not end up with a bit of e-waste :) And surely 2 cheaper phones are still more money than 1 expensive Fairphone.
@oleksiyprotas6376 Wow. I mean, FP has waiting times... RN my husband is waiting for the bottom module probably around 6 weeks. He McGyvered it so it works for now (which is a miracle in itself and probably wouldn't work with a lot of phones). I can't even imagine how the situation in your case must be, while cut off from a lot of trade and having to rely on something like repairability. Thanks for sharing, super interesting point!
@@UndineAlmani heh, 6 weeks gonna hurt. I just assumed from the disassembly video that the charging plug should be easy enough to keep in stock. That being said, for a very heavy user like me who can at times absolutely depend on the phone's health, keeping some spares in advance is a good idea and absolutely outweighs the opportunity costs.
We aren't so much cut off from trade, it's the case with my phone brand to be honest. But it highlights the issue that unless you have a Samsung/Google/Xiaomi, there's a big chance you won't be able to urgently repair it "on the field" in a non capital city, thus you end up with a backup phone. This already happened to me in a peaceful country too.
@oleksiyprotas6376 Ah okay .
Yes, it sucks. But that's also the FP3, and I think that just the port was not so great and a lot of them broke down at once. At least they do produce them, it's just that they are in backlog now. Better this way than if they would over-produce these parts. I don't think that would be good either (like other companies do). But I think on the user's end this is a disadvantage. I will certainly not buy a bottom module just because I'm afraid it'll break. But I thought about getting a wireless adapter. It's permanently suck up the port, and then you can place your phone on an induction charger. However, the port then becomes useless (unless you remove the adapter, but that's not pracitcal). I don't know if the FP5 has the wireless charging option...
3:26 the shaking sound is probably from the optical image stabilsation(OIS) system of the camera. I hear the same noise occasionaly from my phone if i shake it too hard in the wrong direction.
Found your channel while I was researching Fairphone 5. I liked this video very much, you have great comments on this topic! The best thing is that other content on your channel is also very interesting. Cheers!
Thank you! 🤍 I'm glad you like the other stuff. I have a hard time just talking about niche topics and I really hope that more people like the channel for the little everyday mess it is 😅
I ordered fp 5, mostly for a 5-year warranty. All androids I had were mid-range and survived for 5 years with 1 or 2 battery replacements, which I always did on my own like all other services, this one might even exceed that.
My husband has my 3yo FP3 now and it definitely still works like the first day (with the same battery too). He sadly broke the USB C port 🙄 and some claim it's flimsy, but I didn't think so... anyway, buying the "bottom module" in advance might be a good way to stay out of trouble 😆 I don't trust it entirely, but I'll admit I broke a USB port before, so....
I wanna buy it but it's officially not available in India
trying to find details about the fairphone because i'm really curious about it for when i need a new phone! loved your commentary, thanks for the laughs!!
You're welcome. If you have any questions, let me know! I can recommend their forums. Just do a site search on Google »"fairphone 5"+"problems"+site:forum.fairphone.com« and you should find stuff. I use the 4, and I would probably get the 5 now, cause I always go for the newest, unless I buy secondhand. But since I have the 4 and it's still fine, I will not buy another phone for some years now. It looks very very durable, much more than the 3 and 2.
Would you consider buying a fair phone (not the Fairphone, but also something like Shift phone etc)?
I would consider it. I am probably holding out to see how the proposed eu legislation pans out. I am fortunate that ifix it sells oem parts for my phone it's already 3 years old. Wow I didn't realize how long I have had this phone. Replaced the battery one earlier this year and it's kind of crazy having an "old phone" that has really good battery life. I need to warranty my screen protector and the OLED is finally starting to degrade if you know what you are looking for. I do place some value on being able to relock the boot loader running 3rd party rom. Having HDMI out over usb c is probably going to be a requirement for me to consider upgrading in the next couple years. With all the foss apps I have installed it's like a pocket computer. I just want to be able to connect an external display for watching videos and find it infuriating that the USB spec supports it but device makers go out of their way to not support it.
i have the same Fairphone. i didn't hear about Shift phone yet. i'll check it out
I have the FP4 and I plan to keep it for at least 7 years. But I'm also looking at Librem 5 and PinePhone.
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem don't buy librem 5. look at Louis Rossman's video's on them. Their practices are simply horrible.
No. Very poor value proposition.
The last phone I bought with my own money was a Nokia 8210. I eventually gave that one to my uncle. Every phone I've used since, was one of my brother's cast-offs. I tend to avoid doing security sensitive stuff on old phones that haven't had an update in a while. I use desktop machines for most of my computing needs. Though there's no getting away from the increasing need to have a secure device when out and about. The biggest draw for me in a phone like this is the ability to change the battery easily, and the relatively long software support. I don't really trust any company's claim of virtue. They often don't stand up to scrutiny. Though I haven't heard anything negative about this particular company.
What does that gesture, where you pull down below your eye, signify? I've never seen that before.
"What does that gesture, where you pull down below your eye, signify? I've never seen that before."
Yeah, me neither.
It's usually a European thing meaning "my eye" which is comparable to "my arse/yeah right" in the UK.
TL;DR: It means "bullshit".
Hahahaha 🤣 yeah, true. Or it also means "You wanna play me for a fool or what?" Or "Sus!!!" 😁
I've supported them from the start 10 years ago. The FP1 was interesting, but not good. My partner is still using the FP2 after almost 7 years, but last March software support stopped. My three year old FP3 just got updated to Android 13 (it started out on version 9) and still works fine, even the battery life is still good enough, but I can buy a replacement from Fairphone.
What? Android 13? You sure? Even my FP4 is still on Android 12. I'm still waiting for them to release Android 13 for it.
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem I was surprised too, because I've either missed Android 12 or they've skipped that for the FP3.
I'd have a Fairphone if I hadn't been able to inherit the old phone of an uncle who's no longer using it. Much as I would've loved to have a FP, I agree with their slogan that the most environmentally friendly phone is the one that's already in your pocket.
Totally!
The longevity alone is worth it.
Yes, a FairPhone video! Finally :D
I've not seen any comments about the /e/OS, so I thought I would add a comment about my experience with it on my FP4.
I purchased my PF4 from the /e/OS store directly so it came out the box with it installed and its a very basic set up process, much like most android phones.
Banking for me works without issue.
No authication app I've used or still use fail or complain, they work as intended.
The Camera software is FOSS and so its got... Some issues, but I have notice it has gotten better and more stable over time with updates. However its still not fast, (not all that slow either) and doesn't do low light very well.
Videos can look grainy in the didtially processed sort of way, but I believe this is because of the software not being as buffed up, like the googled version of the phone.
The default home launcher is... Well... Not my cup of tea, so I installed something else, Olauncher, which is very minimalistic and love it very so much.
The app store is a mash together of F-droid and the google app store. How's that possible? /e/OS uses a service called microG, so this is how banking apps and google apps work without problems. Its a containerized, stripped down version of the normal google playsotre service and other services, with some spoofing of data, I believe, so its a lot more private.
Some of the default apps are alright but I've opted to remove as many as I can and just others I prefer.
Battery life is good, I think the SoC is a bit power hungry and because it supports 5G, this all adds to a good to sometimes not good battery life if being used heavily, with or without wifi, but again something I've notitced improve with updates.
As for updates, at least once a month, and they happen when you want, and you dont get notified right away either. Every time you reboot the phone it checks to see if there is an update, and let's you know if there is one.
App updates can be controlled in the app store for when to check and update, but also check and updates every time the phone is rebooted, if there are app updates available. Its not actually that annoying its just something to note however.
Last winter I had to deal with an external water pipe burst and I used my PH4's flashlight to help me see in the darkness of the winter night, in my PJs, getting soaking wet at 1am. My PF4 go very wet, it was dropped on Ice, a lot, and I've never worried about the lack of water resitance since. It does have some battle scars on the aluminum frame from the drops however.
I have the green back, I wanted so badly the speckled green back but /e/ were not selling that color way, big sad. D: But I really love the wear on the plastic, its like how leather ages, but its of course not leather.
My only gripe, is the tear drop bezzle for the front facing camera. I never use the front facing camera and I dont like the look of it getting in the way of the screen but its just such a little thing I'm sort of over it now.
I really have come to love my PF4 and the fact I have a 5 year warranty and possible endless software updates is just fabulous and you can't denie that. 😁
Great video by the way, and thanks for reading all this, if anyone made it this far.

Oh ty for this comment! Im currently trying to decide if i want the fairphone 4 or 5 and am not exactly sure
@beyond5511 I don't think it makes a huge difference but from each phone to the other they got faster now and got better cameras. That's the only thing really. I barely notice a difference when I accidentally take my old FP 3 from my husband
@@beyond5511 Happy someone found it useful! 😄
Right now the main differences between the two phones, irrespective of what OS you chose to have installed, is:
-Price, (FP4 is cheaper, FP5 More eexpensive)
-Camera Performance,
-Level of modularity, (how many parts make up the phone, making it easier/cheaper to repare)
-Size of Battery, (FP4 smaller, FP5 Bigger)
-Screen, (FP4 60Hz at 1080p, FP5 90Hz at above 1080p)
There's no bad option here, just pick your perfered price point and enjoy when it arrives! 😁
And let us know what you go for too. 😛

I am thinking about getting one FairPhone 5, because it promises 8 years of security update, and that is really awesome! I can rock it for 4 years before updating to a newer model, and still get to use the old phone as backup for another 4 years(for none work related social medias and stuff. Yeah, I am a corprate slave).
Usually, I use my electronics till they are beyond fix, but for phones, security update is really important. Without it, a backup phone is basically useless other than receiving verification codes. I already got a dummy phone for that.
Not pulling any punches lol love it. Hopefully the next release is in the US for me to buy.
They did release it to the US. Just saw a TikTok on it. They also sent me this info:
"We don't have physical stores in the US, but hopefully in the future! 😊 At the moment, it's only available through Murena: murena.com/america/shop/smartphones/brand-new/murena-fairphone-4/ 💚"
@UndineAlmani
Hi, love your video! Currently considering buying FP4 (FP5 is quite expensive for me) so I have a question:
"Do the older models like FP3 (and FP4 which is on its way to be the "older one") keep up up with the software?"
I mean, regular phones like mid-range Samsungs and Pixels and variety of Chinese shit turn into really glitchy after 1.5-2 years of usage even in the menu, let alone the apps.
So does it happen to be the case with the FPs?
Thank you! My husband has the FP3 and it's still on the newest android. It also remains reparable and parts are still on the site, but I'm not sure how long it'll work. There's a community of people here in Munich and some still have a FP1. You can look that kind of thing up in their forum, many insights to gain! I'd say it's definitely better than any Samsung I ever had, where you're stuck with one android forever.
@@UndineAlmani many thanks! can you give a link to the forum you mentioned?
@antonkuzmishyn2115 forum.fairphone.com/ 👍🏻
I’m in the US. Are any of these available here? The Fairphone site only had location options in Europe.
I think you can order it directly from their website. An alternative would also be the shift phone, but their work conditions aren't fully fair, as they also "invest in projects" or some stuff as part of their "fair efforts". That's why I opted for the Fairphone, that and the design 😜
I decided to get the fairphone 5 after my Blackberry Key2 le broke and couldn't be repaired. I saw a lot of people talking about "ah, the specs are so bad" all the time so I was a bit uncertain. But now I have it, I have no idea what people are talking about. It works fine, the UI is a little funky but that's on android 13 and not the hardware.
My only issues with it stem from me liking the BlackBerry Key series so much and me missing features that my previous phone had. The BlackBerry Key phones were so under rated and I'm sad that they stopped making them. But I'm glad I had the excuse to finally give fairphone a shot. (Although I miss the keyboard so much, I hate typing on glass)
Same! I think it's just fine. It's not "the fanciest of fancy" but the point isn't to get THE best phone on the market in terms of specs, to me the objective always was "what working phone can I get with a decent camera that is also not made by somebody else's kid?". That's it.
I think the key phones were really cute. It must have been easier to type! I have a keyboard for my phone now, so ridiculous, but I just hate typing on that small screen, because for the love of God, I can't do it blind. And I absolutely can do that on a real keyboard.
ethics have way more value than any glossy feature, or even convenience, "but slavery it's ok if that keeps my apple/samsung/thingy low pricey h3h3"
It's way worse in phones even because we barely have alternatives (unlike e.g. in fashion or choice of a low-fuel-intensive car etc.). And most people who can spend 500 bucks or more on a phone, don't spend it on a good one for "performance". I just couldn't do that. And it was still a big step up from my old one. I also compared the camera with a 2yo Apple device and in mediocre lighting it was not superior, so I was like "OK that hype is weird..."
People just aren't confronted with that reality at the time of purchase and so don't spend in regards to the way that product came about. It's still horribly wrong, but people either don't know or can't get other options (some service providers don't allow for certain phones unless they approve of it, as far as phones are concerned). as for the people who buy uncaringly while knowing the true cost, well, they'll burn for their allowance of modern day slavery.
As much as I dislike a lot of EU regulations, I think that's a point where I can probably be grateful for it... The market for such things is pretty tight and controlled here. So you can buy an unlocked phone basically everywhere, just at a higher price. I've heard that Apple in the past would come with a certain provider. Would be a deal breaker for me... I went without a smart phone for a long time too and also had prepaid until 2020. Then, I upgraded to a monthly cancelable plan based on prepaid... 😅
@@UndineAlmani yeah prepaid is great. there is internet everywhere these days
Yes to the fairphone, but I didn't like that from the transition from 3 to 4 they got rid of the audio jack at the same time that they started selling their own wireless earbuds; obviously a profit driven sort of business tactic. Unfortunately I have most of my 'phone money' tied up in the phone itself through my service provider, so if I wanted another phone right now I'd need to cancel to sell my current phone. Not very feasible right now. But in the future, definitely.
Yeah, it definitely has a bad taste to it. But for me it was okay, because I have been using earbuds (semi fair from House of Marley) for several years now. You can also look into the Shift phone, it's cheaper and I think it has a mic jack.
I never had a phone contract, because always free and prepaid, but I can totally understand. It also makes sense environmentally to use what you got before something new. My old phone was no longer usable and dead slow, it also could not be rooted safely, which is why I in the end got the FP3, which is now my husband's. The FP4 was a update because if NFC and 5G which I really wanted, together with some other features...
@@UndineAlmani I chose my current phone solely based on the type of display (not curved screen) and battery life. My previous phone was an admittedly too expensive samsung but I liked it a lot, and at the end of me owning it I'd replaced the screen twice and the battery life was essentially useless; from battery lasting day and a half to having to charge it half-way through the day. So hopefully my current phone will outlast the samsung, and I was hedging a bet with buying newer that I'd be 'future proofing' my decision with longer battery life later on. But if I ever become dissatisfied with those phone to any extent I think I might switch. I want something that's repairable, 4g, and has a microphone jack lol. I'll likely also go for the fp3 in the future, I didn't like that the 4 was 5g (I'm pretty sure it is, anyways).
Only just become aware of the Fairphone, from a CZcams channel about Built-in Obsolescence of manufactured products. I have a 20 year-old LG mobile phone, which still works. I keep it because the Battery is easily replaceable. It runs on the 2G system, so will keep me going until they switch 2G off in 2032. Great video about the Fairphone and will most likely buy one, as I'm 'Old School' and believe in repairing things, instead of recycling them. Loved the fact you've got your underwear drying in the background. ;-). Russ. UK.
lol, thanks, I guess I need to work on that depth of field 😆 got no good film spot in my room. I hate the fact that so many devices have batteries you can't just take out. It pisses me off on a deeper level. But EU just passed some right to repair bill I think... So we're getting closer to at least being able to demand service.
Linus Tech Tips said the fairphone 5 had weak vibration and ringing that was too loud. Do you think that the 4 has the same problems?
Yes, vibration is so subtle, I never feel it when it is in my pocket, but on the desk you'll hear it. However, I don't use that anyway. And I would say that in my Samsung phone it was better but e.g. Xiaomi was not (not my own though). WDYM with loud ringing? Like the alarm sound? That can be set. What is great in the FP4 and 5 is that you can really dim the screen a lot, which was not as easy in FP3 (stock system though).
@@UndineAlmani He said that the ringer noise for calls was not able to be turned down as far as on other phones , and that at its lowest, was still too loud. Thanks for reply.
Love your videos, I use a degoolged phone, but I will get fairphone as soon as this one breaks. God bless.
That's a healthy attitude! Use as long as possible, then switch to something as fair as possible 🤍
I wanted to buy the FP5 but when I saw there was no headphone jack it was a deal-breaker for me. 😢 I wish they got it back.
they sell a USB c to headphone jack adapter. I got one for mine
1.- Does it have harmfull radiation like the newest iphone and oppo etc ?
2.- what if the motherboard gets overheated and burns is that also easy and cheap to fix ?
if you fry your mainboard it's never cheap but it has sensors. i overheated my old one by leaving on the camera a few times and it just shut down with a warning.
what kind of radiation? electromagnetic radiation emitted by phones is not harmful, cause the penetration depth is either irrelevantly small or there is no measureable or relevant excitation of any bodily matter caused by such radiation. don't put it on your balls. the harmful part emitted from those devices is heat.
@@UndineAlmani my samsung got the motherboard fried by a lightning shutdown and i havent been able to replace it, its very comun here where i live
so i heard this phone has very replaceable parts and since you have it and are answering comments...
so thats a no no ?
yes radiation is harmful 100% just because you dont notice is diferent and there are soo much articles about it, but you have to do your research for obviously companies dont profit from harmful phones just like trash food etc,
i feel like, when you watch your tv really really close for a very llong time, how do you feel? thats how it feels with certain phones
thanks for answering cheerios
my fairphone 3 fell into a bucket of greasy water and right after picking it up I dropped it on a concrete floor again. With a week of airdrying it was working again. the screen had come detached slightly, but I pushed it back down and its all good, that was 2 years ago
That is awesome! I wouldn't even trust my "water repellent" camera in that situation and never expected it from Fairphone, but I guess IT JUST WORKS ;D
I think I'll probably get one at some point, and put CalyxOS on it. I just wish they made a smaller version. Modern phones are way too big.
Yes!! It's as big as a chocolate bar (100g bar) but weighs too much to put it in PJ pants (naw, don't want slouchy pants)... The FP3 is lighter though, might be an option!
I found used fairphone for 125eurs and I am not sure is it worth buying? Reason I would buy it is to instal CalyxOS on it. Other phones like pixel are too big for me and i like repeatability of fairphone.
FP3 upwards is big and bulky too. What model is it?
oh sorry i thought i wrote which model it is fairphone 4 :)
If it's in order and works well, that is a sweet deal!! At that price, I'd even buy one for my kid 😱
@@UndineAlmani Welp I asked is there anything wrong with it cuz on pictures theres nothing not a single scratch on screen or anywhere. Hes basically reselling it cuz he got it from somewhere and battery lasts like 2 days or so. Im assuming the reason thats so cheap its cuz its not well known brand. Ppl really overprice like used
pixel 4a which is i think older then fairphone 4 and minimal price is as the fairphone 4 125eur or well over to 200eurs.
I always buy blue phones if they exist (samsung used to make them) now got xioami with blue reflective glass (also has headphones jack)
The phone looks great! Love the color! I'm still rockin' my Moto G6 and it's color "nimbus". The sales lady asked me 2 times if I want it because it's a weird color 😄
That's awesome! I think it's the same with cars, houses, clothes. Everything gets desaturated and more minimal... Especially in architecture I think it's doing more harm than good though. I'm really happy I have a green phone, also because I can't mistakenly pick up someone else's, which happened quite a few times when I had a black one...
@@UndineAlmani For sure, and not only that. Back when I was a student, we had all different kinds of phones. We had literally any manufacturer come up with a different design and made it their own. I mean, you can clearly see what was NOKIA, Ericsson, Motorola (especially them), just by looking at the shape of the device. Now everything is just a black monolith tile. I love the look of the new moto RAZR, because it looks different, but having no headphone jack is pretty much a killer for me :( I'm not using any social media (just viber when I need to text someone who doesn't have signal) and most of the time when I'm out, I'm listening to my music collection and (pardon my language) f*ck if I have to buy those disposable expensive bluetooth headphones.
Totally get that. It sucks if you don't want it. I have been using them for years now, and I absolutely need them for sport and yoga. I disliked the corded one for quite some time before I finally caved. And it was the right decision for me. Only thing that sucks, you could use them as an FM antenna! And now that option is gone and you have to rely on the internet/4G signal at all times, which sucks, cause all this internet based stuff == more dependency.
@@UndineAlmani Oh, I don't stream music, I play it locally :) I buy my music on vinyl records and there is a digital download, so I just compress the files to mp3 (just for the phone) and upload them to my memory card. Yes, it is tedious, but I prefer building my collection myself and having total control over it (I'm a collectible freak). I am totally OK with dealing with headphone cords, just so that I don't have to deal with charging another pointless device. And my wired headphones last pretty much lifetime or until I break them, because they don't have degradable batteries. I learned about Fairphone from your video and I'm willing to take a look at it, if there's an adapter from USB to 3.5mm jack. But I'll stick to my current phone until it gives up.
opens tik tok: “i hate this song”😂😂
I flucking hate 50% of songs and 90% of all content on that app. But it's addictive as hell
that's great. i noticed it in another one of your videos. i have the same phone :D. seems like we have some stuff in common. i got it for the repairability and customizability (the fairness is a nice bonus). the battery lasts about 3 days for me, as i don't use my phone that much. i had to get used to the large size of the phone. what i find a shame is that i can't yet use android phones as laptop, except maybe with a remote desktop connection. the banking apps not working after messing with the bootloader, is probably due to SafetyNet. i'm guessing it's when the bootloader was either not relocked or because it was rooted the wrong way. i think the Fairphone documentation says how to unlock the bootloader, and never being able relock it again when done the wrong way
What do you mean using your Android phone as a laptop? What functionality do you want from it?
@@LinuxIsNotAnOperatingSystem i want to plug it into a display, keyboard, mouse and use it like a desktop Windows pc. i use tools like Visual Studio (not VSCode) to develop in dotNET on Windows. i have considered using VSCode on Linux, as Linux doesn't run Visual Studio and seems to have more options in running on a phone. but VSCode less nice than Visual Studio. the whole situation makes me doubt whether i should be developing in dotNET at all. but at the same time i haven't been happy with the usability of Linux for decades
I've been pretty happy with my fp4. Being in the trades it's taken a lot of beatings. Lots of sawdust in the charging port. Operating system improved a lot during my ownership. Recently replaced the charging port and battery which improved charging and battery life a lot.
My only noteworthy complaint is that it will randomly stop charging. It'll stay at whatever battery percentage it was when plugged in even when left over night. A reboot gets it charging again. I was kinda disappointed it didn't come with a charger and cable, but more money fixed that 😂
That is soooo odd. That's a bug though. Have you seen anyone else report it? I'd definitely let the developers know, cause if it's fixed by a reboot it can be both a hardware and software defect. Mine used to freeze my main screen but I had a themed one, so it was not optimal. It doesn't happen anymore thanks to updates. In general I feel like they really work on keeping it going even though there's a lot of Google shit on it
@@UndineAlmani I used to (co-)maintain a lot packages for official Debian repos and some shady business but haven't cared enough to use my laptop for anything but business, taxes and occasionally some retro gaming for +10 years aside from the occasional raspberry pi implementation like pi-hole or other set-it-and-forget-it applications. The charging problem doesn't happen enough to be a real inconvenience as I'm pretty diligent about plugging it in while driving, which I do a lot. I don't even change the background wallpaper or anything, I've just accepted that my phone is an appliance by now and use it as-is😅 choosing a Fairphone seemed like the obvious choice for multiple reasons and I'm hoping to keep it going for years to come
Hey hey about fairphone 4 i found for 125 eurs well i noticed tgat only thing wrong with it was a missing power button. Idk how or what but still not sure is it a gamble to buy it :/
Uuuh... Well in android you could put the power function on the volume button I think, not promising anything though... But I'd look up what the repair module costs and if it is available. My husband repaired his when the bottom module broke and it was a no brainer
I dont really see any rapairs for it other then on other site selling a replace button? I glanced trough fairphone website and didnt see any buttons to buy. So its probably not worth buying i guess just because all the hassle.
@phobiac281 You need to look up which module it is. I think, I'd buy it if the button still works and only the cap is missing. I'd probably manufacture something or 3D print it. Hard to say, but user forums are helpful about this kinda thing. It has probably happened before.
The colour's pretty nice ..... I would buy it ......
Right? I hope color comes back to phones and cars!
I love the fairphone and want to buy one but they don’t ship to the United States so I have to wait until I can either move to Europe or until they start selling in the US, whichever comes first
They told me they do sell them there though when I asked, check the pinned comment. Maybe that's an option for you!
@@UndineAlmani thank you!
thanks your rant convinced me to buy a fairphone
That's awesome! I can honestly still recommend it after using it for a while now. My husband had to replace the bottom module in his FP3 but it was no biggy, and he added a magnetic charger now. FP5 has better image repetition frequency btw.
@@UndineAlmani I lied, I thought my current phone was broken, but it was just the charger. So no new phone for me for now. But my next phone will be a Fairphone.
My last phone is a google one and I regreted it immediatly. Because I want to support more good and open stuff (and modularity is super awesome! - I am a simple normie user but I harken back to the windows 95 etc. where you had more insight what your computer was doing and more easliy could fix and break stuff and not that slick and everythink is concealed stuff (of course it is on a scale).) Maybe I will install open source version of android, support is gone anyway and the operating system is spooking around.
I must say that I have used Lineage even on my first smart phone ever, which was in 2015 or 16 I think. I had no clue, could have easily bricked it, but me and my husband just made it work. I was a scared little pussy but he rooted the thing, and there was just no going back ever since. Fairphone is "foreign system" friendly aka you can just isntall e/os or Lineage or Graphene on it if you want to. They even encourage it.
We have the same phone and color case
Awesome 💚🎉
Amazing content of a smaller channel is so much more entertaining!
Thank you ❤️🙋🏼♀️
i would consider a fair phone that handles a drop to the floor and/or into a puddle of water repeatably without hassle. a phone that i can rinse off after playing in the mud with my offroad driving friends ;-)
I think it doesn't provide that officially 😆 but it is pretty study!
I've seen comments that people are mad at the EU and their approach to easily swappable battieries, cause "they will be thick as in 2000" or "they cant be water resistant without glueing".
That's nuts. It doesn't even make it flatter, I mean you can make the battery any shape. It's more durable too because it's hard shell and not that mushy shit... Anyway, I know nobody who'd reather have a non replaceable battery, but then I also mostly know engineers and physicists and a bunch of mathematicians 😆
@@UndineAlmani Btw can u make vlog about your physics journey (courses, internship, maybe thesis you wrote)? Or maybe there is one and i missed it? As a physics student myself I find it interesting :D
The last phone I had used it for 4 years, then I bought another and planning it for 3 years or more and it is less than €250. I dont see why I need to buy a fairphone with almost €400. I don't know what it is fair too, it hurts my bank account.
Fairphone tries to pay their workers fair wages at as many stages as possible while also focusing on suppliers who don’t use child labor, slave labor, nor underpaid labor. Cobalt and lithium mining aren’t exactly very fair industries, I personally don’t like the idea of children being responsible for making my phone at any stage.
A big chunk of the price also comes from the fact that it’s a modular phone. It’s almost always cheaper to build a non-modular phone at the cost of the consumer’s ability to repair.
You can think of the cost in another way as well.
A 250€ phone lasting 3 years would cost 83.3€/year.
Buying this 700€ phone but it lasts for 8y would cost 87€/year. So in the end they cost the same but you contributed to less suffering, child labour, e-waste and other unfair working conditions.
Not bad!
Also a good point. I'd even be okay with paying 160€ a year and the phone lasting as long as all my other cheap ones, but less suffering overall. Also, the resale value of it isn't bad if you want to upgrade for some reason. I'll definitely not get a FP5 but maybe in a few years I want a 7, and by my standards, the FP4 will by then still be good for the crowd it attracts anyway
1:09 😂 me too
Headphone jack?
Do they sell out-side of Europe? It is not support Verizon tower, how unlucky.
I only got the information Fairphone gave me directly → see pinned comment! Other than that, I don't know. Sorry :/
@@UndineAlmani I using FairPhone 4 and not support Verizon's carrier service. It should be more fair to support GSM / CDMA / HSPA / EVDO / LTE / 5G. And I am in Puerto Rico.
@zweiwing4435 That's weird. I use GSM, LTE/4G and 5G all the time... Maybe that's some local constraint? It might not have to do with FP at all but with some weird policy. In the EU there are also similar issues, just on different tech and I remember not even being able to buy dual band phones once, but I'm not informed enough to say...
@@UndineAlmani I am in the US at the moment.
Oh no :/ It's so weird though. And it's not a SIM issue? You should definitely contact them though via Twitter or Instagram. They actually reply.
Earphone Jack?
For me, it's not relevant since I've ruined 4/5.from using them so much. I'm actually happy I switched to cordless. But I think it should be an option. Not sure the 5 got one...
Official software support:
New OS for 7y
Updates 8y?
With Lineage OS 8y++
Just put Lineage on my old Samsung X3 Mini 😆 and it still works! I hope this project stays that awesome. It's the Linux Mint for phones.
@@UndineAlmani So does with mine Galaxy S4mini, but Evolution X rom deliver bit better battery life and faster reaction.
This should be next step of European Commision. Sony, Vivo, Oppo, Xiaomi delivers updates only 2-3 years and OSupdate are for most persons lost too difficoult.
Yeah, I mean, by today, my Honda is 20 y.o. and there are still spare parts available through the official vendor. With phones 5 years old... forget it! That's insane. Especially Apple, who basically tell you stuff is "gone for good" when all that's broken is some 50¢ part that can be replaced in
I still don't use smart phones but its becoming increasingly more difficult to remain this way.
Yes! Especially all this two factor authentication crap. I mean, there would be other options... An I'm not sure it's the users' complacency or the industry's greed...
I have to print things a lot, which is a downside environmentally. My anxiety levels have gone way down and I feel more life present if that makes sense, my communications with others feel more meaningful. @@UndineAlmani
@@UndineAlmaniI mean 2FA is great as long as it’s a choice. It’s a ton more secure but I’d rather not be forced into for everything.
If you use your phone only to phone, messages, WhatsApp, browse the internet and some photos, a 200Euro phone is enough.
Such phone will last 5 years without problems, even longer if you don't drop it on the floor.
Also I don't see the utility to upgrade a phone if you don't use it for something special, like a tool.
The point is that its fair made, so no child labor is involved etc. I don't want a new 200€ phone. It can be fair or used.
wow my comment got insta deleted. nice one YT
I can't see it in "held for review" or anything. But they just had an outage, so idk
Well yes the other phones use better specs, better cpu cores, better displays and stuff. And premium materials such as glas and metal. Which are more espensive cause that stuff has to be maschined. Like you have a LCD display. Not Amoled which sucks cause amoled is really cool in phones. No waterproofing ip 54 that's laughable. It doesn't even have a headphone jack nor did i read anything about a sd card slot.
The fairphone could be alot better. But it's better than nothing and has it's audience.
I like your attitude but highly disagree with your standards about making high quality videos of photos with nowadays phones: It is ALWAYS about the person behind the camera, not the camera itself.
You can make absolutely stunning videos of pictures with every modern phone if you want to, thanks to modern software, processors and AI involved.
You just have to want to do it.
I am scripting a video about this exact topic right now. So I'll be discussing it soon!
😅
Value for money.
Fairphone : what's that?
What the fuck are you talking about? What the actual fuck! The "value" of all the other phones is based on fucking child labor. I don't want to have that. And anyone who does and could afford not to is a fuckin subhuman. Ew. Disgusting.
At least blur background
No
@@UndineAlmani watching your video, don't disturb
😂😂😂😂👍🏻
I'm done, BTW when the fairphone gonna release worldwide? Does fairphone thinks every other country people are not deserved to support workers of the Fairphone?
Read the pinned comment. In Europe and the US it's available afaik, don't know about the rest of the world since this was kind of an end user spur of the moment video tbh
