SK has the highest rate of youth suicide in OECD countries. There is a lot of pressure to do well. This song has a lot of meaning for many. Saying. Come looking in your heart. Have a cup of tea. It will be okay. You are important. Such an important message.

This is a special song for ARMY and has great meaning. It basically, at the end, is saying that ARMY gives the best to BTS (and helps them be their best), so they want us to also give our best to ourselves. Lovely sentiment. I never enjoyed rap before BTS. Now I am an ardent fan of the rap line. I find the rap and vocals to be very cohesive throughout all of BTS's work. I don't really know of any other group that incorporates both so well and so often. Just another thing that makes them special. I would challenge some of your commentors below to listen to a few more BTS songs before deciding. They are extraordinary because they cover so many genres - not just pop. 95% of their music is written/composed by themselves so they have complete freedom to do as they wish. Thank you for the knowledgeable reaction.

this song is so comforting to me! i was an elementary school student when i found bts and they helped me so much in school, this song as well is another reminder that there is a place for you with them, that even when the world is hurting you, you still belong somewhere. even if the song is not all that structurally interesting, i find the lyrics the most important part of it. i’m a big fan of lie and house of cards and all, but i think these songs where they directly talk to us (like 2! 3! for example) touch something inside of me as a fan. i was is a really bad place mentally for most of the time i’ve been a fan (since 2014) and they were one of the only things that helped encourage me to see each day through.

About the galaxy, you spotted it well. In Mikrokosmos (bts song), each individual is describe as a precious light with our own stories, history, rings in a tree. And together we form a universe, a galaxy. In the dark we see each other shining and speaking the same, unified, we give each other strength and shine more brightly. Fyi, RM writes a lot of bts song lyrics and he loves some themes like galaxies etc he finds them beautiful to write with

All of the rappers sing every now and then, but j-hope is the one among them most likely to do it. He's also sometimes in the background vocals. He was introduced during their early days as what the idol industry calls a "sub-vocal", just like Jungkook was introduced as a "sub-rapper" and had some rap bars at the beginning

  • @merylgorge636
    @merylgorge636 Před 27 dny +41

You are correct in that V is a baritone with a high range. He harmonizes in octaves with Jimin. The rappers all can and do sing, even J-hope who was singing here.

it's a concert in japan, so they are speaking japanese.
jk is saying something like "ah i want to hear armys (the audience) voice more"
and jhope and the others are chiming in with things like "more" and "louder"

  • @borreguitoazul
    @borreguitoazul Před 27 dny +36

As you mentioned, V takes care of the low notes, because he is the only baritone in the vocal line, he also has a natural deep voice; but it should be noted that his vocal range is the widest of the group and he has great vocal versatility.
As for not as, he is the one who gives the lowest in the vocal line (rappers are baritones like him), but he is also able to sound without depth and high pitched.
Most of the songs of BTS are in the 4th and 5th octaves, V usually sings in the same notes as the tenors but sounds different because of the thickness of his voice, he can also reach high notes in the 5th similar to those of Jin and Jimin.
And something else you mentioned when talking about rappers, actually everyone can do melodic rap and even sing, just like vocalists can rap.

As a non music person I found this musical analysis endlessly fascinating. So thank you. There was a behind the scene filming of Black Swan in a theatre in LA where Taehyung or V was fooling around pretending to sing the opera. He sounded like he could be an opera singer. A tenor perhaps. I am curious to see what you think. It is only a split second though. Two of the rap line were underground rappers. J Hope was a dancer who became a rapper. Thanks again!

I actually thought of Mikrokosmos too, especially when he mentioned the galaxy theme and the army bombs. Yes, that reference isn't an accident :) and Mikrokosmos is exactly that. Plus it's just a lovely song.

I never used to listen to rap, but then I discovered bts, and now I love it. With rapping it's more rhythm and cadence that I listen for when I don't immediately understand the language. That said though, I grew up not understanding 70% of the lyrics to the music i listened to. It wasn't until I learned English i could latch on to the lyrics. To this day there are Michael Jackson songs i know very well that i don't know the lyrics to.

    -Stigma (V)
    -Awake (JIN)

    -The truth untold (Vocal Line)
    -Film out (Group song)

Agreed! I might toss Your Eyes Tell onto this list, and a few more of their solo songs - RM's Wildflower, maybe? Yoongi's Snooze, especially with some of the background about how the piano part came about. I'm trying to decide on a Hobi solo but I'm not sure if More would be an interesting one to analyze...
For so many people I'd be suggesting Blood Sweat and Tears.... on a different reaction I did suggest he do Save Me and I'm Fine back to back :D
I really loved your list and just wanted to toss a few more ideas onto the end of it. :)

Somebody has suggested you react to Yoongi’s (as August D) ‘Snooze’. It’s an interesting one with the piano part written by Ryuichi Sakamoto and the sung part by The Rose’s, Woosung.
J-Hope is a lead rapper and sub vocalist. He isn’t counted as part of the vocal line but he sings a lot and harmonises really well with the vocalists. He’s actually their lead dancer and dance captain.
The call and response in this is a very important part. JK will sometimes start singing that as he leaves the stage and it initiates quite an amazing feeling as he sings it and the audience responds. There’s a sketch that goes with it in which JK,is feeling very down and goes to the Magic Shop where shopkeeper, Jimin, tries to find a way to heal him by sending him to see the other members who each try but fail until eventually he’s given something which gladdens his heart.
It’s always worth looking at Doolset Lyrics to find a good translation of their songs. The South Korean audiences react to the rappers because they understand what they’re saying. Those of us who don’t speak Korean have to work at it.
BTW, most Idol groups have their own light stick. BTS’ ARMY Bombs are synched to the stage.

    Yes the audience is huge.
    V is a baritone.
J hope sings very nicely as well as rapping, watch their Tiny Desk concert, great songs and emotions.
Rapping and singing are basic to many BTS songs, the lyrics are always relevant.
Another song I think you would enjoy is Crystal Snow, some beautiful singing.

  • @marshaanderson2677

V has the biggest range and is more naturally a baritone. If you can, you will get a better idea if you listen to the Tiny Desk concert or the MTV recording of the cover of Coldplay's Fix You. If you choose to listen to any of their individual ones, V's Tiny Desk one is quite interesting. It is more in the jazz genre.

RE crowd screaming loudest for rap sections: BTS started as a hip hop group, so there is that, but a big component is that is time for the 3 rappers to shine, so the screaming is for the members themselves.

Personally I like the song but than I'm not a musician and can't hear "all that" untill an expert like you shows it to me.
But to me sound and lyrics are beautiful.
    Thank you!
Galaxy, Wings, Night and similar themes play a big roll in BTS lyrics as they are about moving forward and up.
"The magic shop is a technique used in psychodrama. A therapist helps the protagonist create an imaginary magic shop where the protagonist can sell whatever they would like and buy whatever they would like."
Usually something "bad" is exchanged for something "good". Since we are talking about therapy we are exchanging emotions not physical things. For example exchanging hesitation for sureness.
BTS has song like Mikrokosmos, 134340, Moon (Jin), moonchild (RM) - some of the songs landed on a Nasa playlist for the next moon mission.
BTS Queen is the song "Spring Day" - it's beautiful and hasn't left Korean charts since 2017 - It's SK longest charting song and there can't be many records it has not broken.
As a musician I think you may like Suga's song that he dropped under Agust D "Snooze (feat. Ryuichi Sakamoto, WOOSUNG of The Rose)" in 2023.
(May Ryuichi Sakamoto rest in peace)
    You nice! Keep going! 💜

It’s so beautiful but the beauty of the song really comes once you get to know the essence of BTS and who they are and what they mean to ARMY which is so much more than just fave artists to fans. I think ARMY (BTS fans) like both the rap & vocals. I was never a huge rap fan before this, I was super picky about what rap I liked, but BTS fits the bill. I love hearing the rapline songs, and the vocal line songs, and love them the most when they're all together. I'm 51 btw, & their music has saved my life & kept me going through the years of tragedy- losing my mom ,sister, sisters husband and an auntie in a 4 month period then 2 years later losing my husband plus other random trauma lol. They heal the soul just by being themselves & singing/rapping about their thoughts & experiences. BTS & ARMY have been through a lot together. It feels like more than your standard para social relationship

Well, they have over 350+ songs in their catalog with group and solo work, so I imagine there's something you'll like more. This song really is special to Army but perhaps something like their NPR Tiny Desk concert would be more appealing to you. I do, however, enjoy your breakdown. Borahae my friend.

as always highly interesting video. thank you very much. bts puts a very high priority on peforming the music, so they often write music for the stage first & foremost. the stage IS the magic shop for them & us, so yea, the concert experience is always the most intended experience for them when creating & composing.
don't sleep on the musicality of the rapline though. you reacted to vocal line song so you could pin point their differences so well alrady, but, (while this song was certainly not a rap heavy song) if you would (through a rapline song for example) look at their rapping just as another instrument they use to convey the music, you'd see how DIFFERENT they are in their musicallity. the simplest summary army often uses is, RM goes with the flow. suga goes against the flow & jhope invents a flow. same goes with their lyris (or it's poetry better said) that is inseparable from bts's music. one analyses the world. one criticizes the world, one celebrates the world. same goes to the dancing, being one of their instruments to convey the intention of the music. it ALL plays into the orchestra of BTS's *music* . and this whole package is what makes their art so unique, special and effecitive.
ps, you would have SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO much fun reacting to RM's newest solo album "right place wrong person" as the title already implies, it's quite alternative, jazzy, experimental, out of the box, & just such a free playground. i'd LOVE to see your analysis around it!!!

My personal musical taste is very diverse. As a kid, my parents listened to a lot of classical music, big band music, folk and country music and early rock. It really set me up to have a deep appreciation for the many ways music as an art form can be expressed. I discovered rap back in the early days of hip hop and fell in love with its lyricism and cadence. I think rap music and melodic music hits me in very different ways (maybe different parts of my brain?) I love that I can have it all as a music fan by just listening to what fills my heart. BTS came to me later in life and I have fallen in love with their music and the message in their lyrics. I just realized how often I say 'fell in love" when talking about music, lol. But to be fair, when people around me have disappointed me, music never has. So love is perfect word to describe my relationship with it.

But then a day came when the message got through on a very dark day: "you give me the best of me, so you'll give you the best of you", tears fell and this song is never ever not gonna be beautiful to me, whether it's musically intricate or not :) Also, "magic shop" is a name of a psychotherapy technique and once you read up on it, you understand the "so show me, I'll show you" line's deeper meaning. Enjoy the journey!

The “aye aye” in the rap parts are usually done only on a live stage, you won’t hear that on studio recordings ( not that I have noticed anyway). It is like supporting or emphasizing the rap. Not sure how exactly to say that, besides that they are not really an official part of the song.
I am not a big rap fan, but with BTS, I do enjoy it more especially Suga’s rap. I have not been able to get into the rap line songs such as the Cyphers, but I do appreciate their talent in that area.

This song (and this performance in particular) made me ARMY. I'm not sure if it was just because it was something I needed to hear at the time or it was simply because of how catchy it is to me, but while I had heard most of BTS' title tracks before I heard this song, this was the moment when completely fell for them. I literally remember all of a sudden feeling so much love for these guys that I didn't know what to do with myself and I ended up spending the rest of the day learning hangul, so I could learn the lyrics and sing along with them (with absolutely terrible pronouncition 😆).
That being said, I do understand that it's less interesting from the music perspective than something like Lie or House of Cards.

    • @evantesseract737
      @evantesseract737 Před 27 dny

Yeah it's much more about connecting and delivering a message than anything else.
I fell for them - and especially JK - pretty hard through this song. I just kept thinking about its emotional and mental health impact, and it hit me that they didn't have to do this, but they did it anyway. It drove home how deeply they mean what they say and how much they care about people's well-being.

The singers are actually much more popular than the rapline as far as numbers. The reason the crowd was going wild was because the individual members started to walk out into the crowd (onto the thrust stages) at the point where RM starts rapping. So you will see the crowd continue to go wild as it switches back to the singers as well.

I could be wrong, but I believe the GALAXY they are talking about, is the BTS galaxy, that is shared with Army. There is a whole world that is incorporated in BTS music. I don’t understand it all, but would love to hear where we can go to get information on the .”BTS World.” 😏 I find BTS can be “Intimate” with Army, even though they are in such a large setting. ❤🇺🇸

Thank you for taking the time to learn the names of all the members and their roles in the group.
I enjoy BTS having a rap-/vocal- line because it gives so much variety to their music. You asked about what moved us more - lyrics in the rap part or the vocal part. To me, it all blends nicely because the rap part allows to say more (more words, more complex message) while vocals build and make emotions flow and make it easier to participate in the song (at least to me singing alongside is easier then the rap parts).

    Some thoughts about BTS rap:
    * RM and SUGA were underground rappers from before the group's 2013 debut. Producer/director Bang Si-hyuk chose them for those talents, as well as their abilities as musical composers, lyricists, and producers. They didn't see themselves as vocalists. J-hope was added as a highly trained national-award-winning street dancer. He had no experience singing. He eagerly learned rap from his roommates RM and SUGA. Over time, producer/director Bang changed the concept of the group to include singers. He searched for and added singers, one by one. He decided the group was complete when he added Jimin as the 7th member, and BTS debuted 6 months later. As you might guess, the story is more complicated, but this is the basic explanation of how BTS came to have 3 rappers and 4 vocalists.
    * Rap puts a lot of ideas into a song quickly. Ideal for our guys who have a lot to say!
    * In many of their songs, each rapper takes a different aspect of the subject. This allows for exploring a variety of viewpoints and attitudes, all in one song.
    * Rap in general has an interactive dynamic. The "Aye-aye!" interjections are how the others hype up the one currently rapping. BTS often hype each other when they perform free-form, without choreography. It's a hip hop thing.
[When they are doing choreo, it is serious business! But even then they do ad libs when the energy is high.]
    * There is one more component to consider besides lyrics and melody, and that's rhythm. Fans of rap are fascinated with rhythm patterns, tone of voice, speed, and the vibe they are experiencing. Rap connoisseurs can enjoy BTS music purely for how it makes them feel. BUT, you make an excellent point. Words are for conveying ideas! In the early years, RM and SUGA voiced sadness that some fans (the loudest ones) were wild for BTS's dancing, good looks, voices, and personalities, but didn't care to notice lyrics. They put a lot of thought into writing those words! And RM's lyrics have word-play, double entendre, reference great literature, etc. For many of us, enjoying a new BTS song comes in stages. We take in all we can see and the music we hear. Then we go back to learn the lyrics. And then we find out there is more meaning in what we saw and heard!
Thanks for being a kind, thoughtful reactor who shares so many great insights into the music of BTS! ARMYs love discussion, sharing personal insights, and learning more about BTS music.💜
