Land Cruiser At The Bottom Of Shafer Trail

  • Got a call from a local tour company that they had a rig with a broken front axle at the bottom of Shafer Trail. We decided this was a perfect job for Ol Blue. So we loaded it up on the trailer and headed up to go get it. We unloaded just outside of the national park entrance and drove the tow truck in and down the Shafer Switchbacks. Once down in the bottom and finding the rig we realized we had brought the right truck. It picked it up perfectly and carried it right up the switchbacks and to the trailer. Was a fairly easy recovery with some beautiful scenery. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

The first time I traveled over Shafer Trail was in the early '70s; I wasn't driving but riding with a bunch of other geologists. The road was so narrow that we had to fold the mountain-side rear view mirror, and the hairpins were so narrow that anything larger than a an old army CJ couldn't make a point-turn, so you drove as far into the hairpin as you could, got out and put the rear-view back and folded the other one, then backed down to the next hairpin. Shafer Trail looks like a freeway today.
That Lilly is a precious gem! Fearless, smart, talented and I should also mention, adorable! Her presence will certainly add new subscribers.

I rescued one of those same FZJ80s a few years ago (might have been that same one). We were out by The Needles District on our way back from Elephant Hill and saw them on the side of the road with a flat. Of course we stopped to check on them (no cell service in that area) and found their lug wrench had shattered trying to get the wheel off. Fortunately I had the correct size wrench and we got the tire changed. Our dogs' day care became an overnight stay because of the delay, but we got all the tourists and the rig home safely.
