      Idk, maybe they are, but where I live they tend to oversell in an area where they don't actually have enough bandwidth to supply everyone at the advertised speed. You get slow ass service and it's not technically a violation of the contract because they advertise UP TO a certain speed, with no guarantee of average. Having a dedicated line might make a difference. That said, $400/mo for 20 megaBITS is obviously insanely bad.

      So there are different types of fiber, this being a high bandwidth, long distance line is why the speeds are slow. Yes the speed of light is true but its how data is interpreted in that long distance line. Think of it like a long distance 16 lane highway in a crowded city. Yes many people are using it the same without the city exploding but its still not very fast.

    I have Comcast and have 400 mbps down but a measly 8 mbps up (and I usually don't even get 8). This is $60 per month. I uploaded a 15 minute 4K video to CZcams and it took near two hours to complete. Whenever I complete a personal photo project, it takes a long time to backup to the cloud and upload small images to my blog (I never timed these).
    If I want to get even 20mbps up, I have to get the gigabit down package ($100) which I don't need. Then there's the Comcast business packages and it was flippin' $80 for a 20mpbs up and down connection. And that's for one connection; I have no idea if there's a minimum amount needed to get a business package. Ridiculous...

    I remember playing a MUD circa 2001 and we would raise money in-game for the owner of the game for a dedicated t1 line. This was $400/month... in 2001.... for 1.5mbs. But the line was way more stable than commercial faster lines, which is important because it was accepting 500 (very low data per player) connection at the same time and sending data every 0.1s or so.

    I think people really underestimate how expensive symmetric business connections are. He's also probably getting a guarantee of up-time and a set timeframe in hours for expected repairs rather than waiting days/weeks to get a tech out there. My quick look says ATT is charging upwards of 450/month for a 10 Mbps dedicated so I think he's getting a reasonable deal actually. A consumer connection is gonna have downtime no matter what and you're completely at the mercy of the telcom to get it fixed on whatever schedule they deem necessary.

    Starlink hello?

  • @Dr_Mel
    @Dr_Mel Před 7 měsíci

    Ok, first of all megabits and megabytes are different, they both kept swapping them. Speed is traditionally measured in bits. Storage is usually measured in bytes. Your harddrive or RAM might have gigabytes of capacity but your fiber network is a gigabit connection, for example.
    1 byte is 8 bits. The notation for bytes is B and bits is b, lowercase. Mbps is megabits per second. Some providers have started confusingly using MBps meaning bytes per second, and you need to multiply that by 8 to get the usual number. The chart he showed did seem to be in bits, and is possibly some kind of edge case service for low data connections that have guaranteed uptimes for like POS services or whatever. Otheriwse it makes no sense. You're probably paying for them to trench and service a dedicated line.
