Ash and oil make like a cery crude soap, mixed with detergent which is soap, the trick is to apply soap to make sure the soot doesn’t stick and it’s easier to wash off when the soap is already there.
Brilliant honestly. Didn’t even stain your hands!

That's exactly what I was thinking - as soon as she said 'ash' I was like "...isn't that soap??" and then it made sense - a layer of soap between the kettle and the soot. You're right, honestly brilliant.

I was about to say something similar. Soap is made from lye and fats and lye is extracted from ash, so yeah it’s great. Not really getting your hands dirty either. They’ll wash off really nice and clean

We in the caribbean probably got this from you guys. we sometimes add soap as well and it works great both ways. Much love 🎉
It also works with any kind of oil or fat- now that i live in America where palm oil is rare i use canola or vegetable oil. So anyone living anywhere can benefit from this!

Did you also get drug dealing and stealing from Africans? I’m African but I hate these baseless connections that Caribbeans and Americans love to spread. This custom is seen in many other cultures and not just African culture. It may not even have originated in Africa. So trying to act like you got it from Africans is absurd,

We do this in Jamaica too, no palm oil though. Even if we never took the preventative method, it works just the same to scrub the pot clean AFTERWARDS.

Nothing "environmentally friendly" about an open fire.
The government doesn't have a fire ban in urban areas for nothing.
Nothing "green" about burning all that wood.
But then again, Africans don't care about their own environment as much as they claim.
And animal poaching is almost entirely black Africans.

Environmentally friendly washing up liquid does this alone very nicely, no need for ash or anything else. I discovered this on a Girl Guide camp in UK over 30 years ago. Yes, we also know how to cook on a fire, it's just that we prefer to save it for camping trips. 😊
