It's a deposition. The smart thing to do in a deposition is just what he's doing. Short and concise answers. Because the more they talk, the more questions can be asked, and worse his case will be in court. This is typical and any lawyer will tell you that this is how you do a deposition. Pretty standard. This is how one is advised to respond in depositions. Say as little as possible without lying. Never provide a speculation or guess in response to a question. Your goal is to not help the other side.
