Lecrae - Joy Through Sacrifice

- We live in a culture that encourages us to bury failure and pain. It’s a social media society where escape into the latest, shiny thing along with a desperation for likes and followers is the norm. Pitfalls such as depression and trauma need to be avoided at all costs, even though we’ve all been there at one point or another. But what if the very things we run away from, the raw hurt and pain, could produce in our lives true purpose and identity?
This week at VOUS Church we had the special honor of hearing from the Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist, Lecrae. He dove deep into the idea that joy and pain go hand-in-hand by giving a glimpse into his own story of hardship.
In Hebrews 12:2, we also see how Jesus was able to see past the sorrow of the cross, to joy at the right hand of the Father. Through Jesus’ example, we are invited to look at our own pain, hard as it may be, and find joy on the other side.
To find joy, we first need to identify the past hurts, mistakes or failures we've been stuffing away and struggling with internally. Then we can face the pain head-on, let go of striving and allow the experience to mold us into new creations.
God doesn’t call us to hide our wounds. Like Lecrae, there may be a point in our lives where we must face the music and deal with the darkness in our lives. But embracing the process, rather than running from it, is just the radical step needed to create lasting joy in our lives.
God can turn the bleakest moment into a story of triumph if we are willing to let him use it. Our scars can testify to healing only if we show them.

CK -why are you after his critics? What does it prove that he can talk to the church? He’s a hip hop artist who makes money in the world and the church. The church is his base also. He’s a good guy and needs our prayers-all rappers have critics by the way. It’s part of the game whether he’s a Christian or not, but the difference is Lecrae goes back and forth with the church
Yes, because everyone pretends they are perfect and are quick to cast stones and judgment. Instead of supporting him and praying for him all these perfect followers of Christ are breaking him down. I respect that what he’s been going through and all the hatred towards him he’s still looking for the light in all of the darkness. People don’t even listen to his cries through his messages. If he’s a “good guy” and you’re also a “brother in Christ” why send him death threats and hate mail??? I’m not saying you did it, just generalizing. He makes money in the church and in the world? Well so does everyone else who holds a position in the church: leaders, pastors, boards, etc. he can speak to both? Well, that’s actually good, because most church goers can’t. He goes back and forth? This man is struggling through life and is only human like everyone else. And besides that is only your opinion.
I just don't like his new sound and style, the man has a God given talent and he's making music that just sounds like everything else... I don't like trap period
You can preach too... Father bless him and his wife and children and family. Heal him and surround him with godly men and women whom he can trust in Jesus name.
When your son said he wanted to be like you... that hit. I read your book the day it released and I finished it in less than 2 days. Powerful stuff. You've been through a ton of physical and mental pain to be where you're at now... a true inspiration, a role model, an example. Continue doing what you do boss, I receive the word.
I’m in a very similar season at a similar stage in my life, panic attacks, identity issues and all. Thank you for the encouragement brother.

This is such a great message of perseverance. God has blessed Lecrae to operate in so many different spaces, which means more people are being influenced for Christ! Praise God, let’s continue to grow His kingdom every day as we look His Son who endured the ultimate trials!
I think people fail to realize God uses people in different sceneries. A lot of people try to bash Lecrae as he became popular in the hip hop industry because of their " idea" of where he should be and what he should be doing. It's good that he is being bold and letting God use him foreign places. All it takes is one light to light up a cave of darkness, keep praying for him!

I’ve listened to this man for years he was one of the first Christian artist I listened to when I gave my life to Christ. Even know hearing him give his testimony has me thinking of how awesome our God is. God doesn’t want perfect he wants you. I’ve seen the ridicule and anger towards Lacrae and I could only imagine the hurt he dealt with and still deals with. I know his music has changed but to me the message is still clear as Crystal to me. He’s a street reporter he’s giving people who are not used to the pain and violence in the black community a first person view. That’s why his music is like a bitter pill to most because it’s not polished anymore he doesn’t want to show you the polished stuff. He’s showing you the dark days and showing you how to get through them. I can’t tell you how to listen to his music but with lacrae you gotta dig into his music it’s not spoon fed.
I genuinely love Lecrae Moore. I've been on his side since 2011 and we follow the same Jesus.

Thank you Lecrae! I have been praying for you bro! I am a white male. There is nothing wrong with the choices you made to support BLM and change the direction you took with your music trying to reach more in the secular Hip Hop circles...
It's good! Racial equality, justice and peace are all through the Bible. So continue fighting (peacefully) for those black voices being crushed in American society. Ignore the white evangelicals who left you when you exposed their sins of nationalism and racism. They must go on their own journey with God.
As for reaching out to the secular Hip Hop market this is also in the spirit of Christ who reached out to tax collectors and prostitutes. Keep doing it but please keep Christian community close and people who understand your calling. It's okay if you lost followers. A serf must die for it to bear many more seeds. You have died to some superficial followers and Wil gain more followers who actually need Christ.
I am so glad you are dealing with that emotional wound from child hood. Keep diving in there bro. It's so key. When you heal emotionally you will be more able to stand for justice for black people being oppressed and to reach into the crazy world of secular hip hop. If you don't heal one of those burdens will be too hard to bare. Keep doing Matthew 11:28-30, John 15:1-17

Yeh I like the way he opens up his heart and shares how God has pulled him through the hard times. I've been into his music for some time and I'll keep listening cos there's a lot of wisdom in what he's saying and doing practically to show God's love to others. I've been in some dark places recently and seeing guys like Lecrea going for God has helped me push through. I thank God for this message and His endurance!

Lecrae is very vulnerable in this message; which allows me to relate to Him all the more. Lecrae, you don't know how much this message spoke to me! I am an anchor baby, born to illegal immigrant parents who came here 45 years ago. I witnessed hate towards them and towards me and with everything that has been going on with immigration these past few months my heart has been broken. I have sobbed to the Lord, not knowing what to do but God is good and he has been answering me and I finally feel free because I am being true to myself and my beliefs.
