On the 200 and 400mts, it's necessary not to start at 100% , but maybe 90% for the 400 and 95% on the 200. On the 100mts it's different for each individual, but it should feel like you only put 90 something percent of the effort, to stay fluid and relaxed. 85% for me, feels too slow.

I'm glad you bring this up. It's really an interesting concept and certainly, in a high pressure race, most people who haven't practiced will not be able to throttle themselves back like this . . To my experience there is too wide a diversity of talents and weaknesses for just one universal rule to teach everyone. A coach should either watch slow-mo film of the runner, and/or present to the runner various strategies including this one. Fast drivers may prefer their high early effort, but strong finishers [like Lyles and Lewis] may go for this 85 rule. I wish I could check stuff out myself but I'm partially disabled right now.

Thanks for the comment. It certainly takes a high level of mental maturity and trust to adopt 85% philosophy. Especially for Young athletes. This is why sprinters normally hit peak mid to late thirties because they ve developed a level of understanding. Athletes do have different talents and strengths. Being honest with oneself and finding the balance is key.

2 years ago I ran 60m in 7.3 seconds, at 80% effort. I am stronger now, in certain areas and will see, what my 100m times will be later this year
