East Link Starter Line Opening

  • The first segment of Sound Transit's 2 Line is now open between South Bellevue and Redmond Technology! This new line features 8 new stations at Redmond Technology, Overlake Village, BelRed, Spring District, Wilburton, Bellevue Downtown, East Main, and South Bellevue.
The line from Seattle to Overlake was approved by voters in 2008. Following a turbulent planning period, the project was set to open in 2023, however, (long story short) construction quality issues on the segment between South Bellevue and Downtown Seattle caused a massive delay. Since the issues only affected the I-90 portion of the line, in August 2023, Sound Transit decided to move forward with opening an Eastside-only "starter line" in spring 2024. Spring 2024 is now here and so is the starter line! The remainder of East Link will hopefully open sometime in 2025. Another extension to Downtown Redmond is currently on track for early 2025.
It is definitely a little weird without the connection to Seattle, but it is much faster than existing bus service between Overlake and Bellevue and also makes it much easier to access BelRed and Spring District by transit. There are also plenty of opportunities to access the new line via bike with Eastrail at Wilburton station and two new bike/ped bridges at Overlake Village and Redmond Technology. If you want to get to the 2 Line from Seattle, you can take route 550 to South Bellevue or you can take route 545 to Redmond Technology.
This video showcases the new line, starting with the first westbound train from Redmond Technology and then each station from east to west.

Street level? I thought we learned our lessons in the South end. Groovy video.

This was an ST2 project. Sound Transit committed to no at-grade crossings for all ST3 projects onward (as everything in ST2 was pretty much solidified at this point).

It's not as bad since they have crossing gates and a curb, and also the line isn't as busy as the 1 line

Honestly wasn't a bad choice for the short amount it's at street level.
They had the choice either keeping it along the freeway or along a developing area.
Would take the developing area purely due to it encouraging transit oriented developments rather than wasting one side to a freeway like Overlake Station currently is

I am from the ATL ATLANTA. YOU all have transit 🚇 system. Atlanta has a Sunway systehanks to Seattle. Our MARTA Sunway system is 48 miles long tracks with 38 subway stations 🚉 👌 and growing for the Atlanta metropolitan population over 6.2 millions. May God bless Seattle and its leaders and residents. 🙌 🙏

man these new trains look really nice, and they're really comfortable. I've always been a little critical about Sound Transit effectively stringing trams together for their rolling stock, but it gets the job done. I was worried it was going to limit speeds but they move quickly enough regardless. Great video, can't wait for the full line to open. I wonder what they'll do with the 550 bus when the bridge opens

20 minutes and 40 for a round trip. The design of the tunnel is why it has such a slowed down time. Too tight a curve designed for an eventual four car train link.

Why did they make a train that only serves wealthy people? What about the vibrant POC communities in south Seattle? How will they have equitable access to the east side?

Southside to Federal Way will open up sometime in 2026. Last year they discovered unstable land around the 272nd area. They needed to go back and think of a solution and are building a 1 mile long bridge but it's still 2 years away.
      Also remember that money talks.
