Full disclosure, I'm a Yank with strong UK ties and I don't want to look like a duffer and ask my mates. But I've got a couple questions. I did read through quite a few of the comments and I didn't see the answers, so I'll ask.
1) why beans first is a no no?
2) why are they called baked beans when they've never been baked?
Im not British but i still have your answers
1.) So the cheese can melt, common sense!Some people like the contrast of hot food with fresh cold cheese on top that hasnt melted yet,but im assuming in UK this is a pooular street food and a big debate(who cares they food gross anyway😂)
2.)Baked beans like from a can (they should really be called baked style beans or baked flavor bc im positive they not slow baking beans at the Heinz factory) but baked beans in the UK are made with a more tangy tomato based sauce and isn't cooked with meat and isn't sweet, which made them stick out more and look "unbaked". This is fr chili on a baked potato Baked beans is to UK what Spam is to the pacific island.
